    1 HON 201 HNR (PHS 201): Elizabethtown History: Campus and Community Samantha Phillips Professor Jean-Paul Benowitz 8 May 2020 Abraham N. Cassel Residence: 590 East Market Street; Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania Abstract: This house was built in 1852 by Abraham N. Cassel (1810-1895) proprietor of Cassel & Son Lumber Yard, established by his father Henry Cassel (1776-1864) one of the founders of Marietta.1 It was one of the first six brick houses in Marietta.2 The bricks were made in England and shipped to Marietta via the Susquehanna River.3 In 1814, after Henry Cassel lost a majority of his wealth with the failure of the Marietta and Susquehanna Trading Company, he sold 45 acres of this land to Captain Judge Jacob Grosh (1776-1860) who established Moravian Town, which was later nicknamed “Bungletown.”4 Captain Grosh a native son of Marietta served four years in the Pennsylvania House of Representivies and four years in the Pennsylvania State Senate.5 After, he served nine years as a judge of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas.6 Abraham N. Cassel later purchased plot 158 of the land sold to Grosh.7 In 1834, Abraham N. Cassel was one of the first school directors elected in his district, a position he held for ten years.8 He served as a member of the town council for many years.9 Beginning in 1836, he had an active part in the organization of the Marietta Lyceum.10 He was elected to the State Legislature on the Whig ticket in 1837 and served the sessions of 1837, 1838, and 1839.11 He had active roles in organizing the Susquehanna Institute, the Pioneer Fire Company, the Marietta Lancaster Turnpike Company (President), formed a stock company which published The Mariettian which was later sold and renamed The Marietta Register.12 He 1 Susquehanna Times, “McDevitts Were First to Restore One of Marietta’s Fine Old Homes,” July 21, 1976, 4.

Spangler Residence: 67 Fairview Avenue; Marietta, Pennsylvania Barr Spangler (1822-1922)1 built this home in 18902 with plans from prominent architect C. Emlen Urban3 (1863- 1939) for his son Charles S. Spangler (1857-1926)4. It was built directly next door to Barr’s home, Cottage Place, built in 18615, expanded in 1871 renamed Early Dawn, since 1956 called Old Hickories. While the house was built in 1890, ownership of the lot was not transferred to Charles until 18996. Barr Spangler was the oldest active bank president in the U. S.7 when he died at age 100 in 19228. He directed the First National Bank of Marietta (1863) for 59 years9. He served as Treasurer of the Pennsylvania State Temperance Union10. He was a delegate to the State Prohibition Convention in 1887 and twice the candidate for Pennsylvania state auditor general for the Prohibition Party11. In 1885, Spangler was the Prohibition candidate for State Treasurer of Pennsylvania12. He was a leader in the Marietta First Methodist Episcopal Church13. At age fourteen he worked as a clerk in a dry goods store and eventually buying the business joined by his elder brother William, his son Charles, and a nephew, J. Barr14. In 1853, he moved his store and residence to 36 West Market Street15 where the family business continued until 1979. The Charles S. Spangler Mansion has a cottage in the backyard (the address is Prospect Alley) currently used as a studio16.

    HON 201: Elizabethtown History: Campus and Community Kyle Cappucci Professor Jean-Paul Benowitz 6 May 2021 Pennsylvania Canal Hotel and Ferry House – 280 West Front Street, Marietta, Pennsylvania Abstract: Constructed in the 1820s this Georgian Style building served the Pennsylvania Canal as hotel, pub, restaurant, and town gathering place. Established by Colonel Christian Keesey & stepson, Dr. Jacob Glatz, they also owned the Accomac Inn & Glatz’s Ferry on the York County side of the Susquehanna River. The Pennsylvania Canal Hotel and Ferry House strategically co-opted new opportunities brought to Marietta from traffic on the Mainline Canal. The corner of West Front & Perry Streets is a historically significant location, demarking the border of Waterford, established by James Anderson & Irishtown settled by Colonel James Duffy & James Mehaffey. Colonel Thomas Scott made this property synonymous with the Pennsylvania Railroad. John DeVitry's restoration of the property in the 1960s contributed to local preservation initiatives when this served as a counter cultural gathering place even hosting social activist actress Jane Fonda. Schaffner House: 220 West Front Street; Marietta, Pennsylvania Abstract: Constructed between 1870 and 1872, by Calvin A. Schaffner, in the Pennsylvania German style, later remodeled in the Federalist style, the house has long been associated with the lumber industry and Pennsylvania Canal. Originally built as a three bay house with an attached two bay shop, these homes were rented by Schaffner's lumber yard workers. Schaffner was a lumber and coal merchant. He was a founding member of the Marietta Academy (1845), along with his brother-in-law Dr. James Cushman. A founding member of the Ashara Masonic Lodge NO. 551, he served as Worshipful Master in 1881. Schaffner was postmaster of Marietta in 1890. As part of the historic preservation initiatives in Marietta, following Hurricane Agnes in 1972, the property was saved from condemnation and converted into a single family residence. EPA has the following comments on the Assessment. Page 1 In the fourth paragraph of the Summary section, PAHs can bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, via the pathways of sediment and diet. Bioconcentration is greater for the higher molecular PAHs than for the lower weight compounds. Bioconcentration also tends to be very species specific, with lower forms of organisms showing higher BCFs than higher forms. While fish can metabolize PAHs, some PAHs are associated with tumors, neoplasms, and other growth anomalies. Some metabolic intermediates of PAHs are likely to be a much greater threat to aguatic biota than to fishermen. Page 2 In the fourth paragraph, the Borough of Columbia waste water treatment plant is directly across Front Street to the south of the Site. Page 6 In the fourth paragraph, the Lancaster Water Authority water intake on the Susquehanna River is approximately 400 feet offshore. Page 8 In the Environmental Contamination and Other Hazards section, EPA believes that some contaminants of concern at the UGI Site have not been included in the Public Health Assessment including but not limited to xylene. Also, considering benzo[a]pyrene but not other PAHs is likely to lead to an underestimate of risk.
