GUIDELINES FOR ROOFING Town of Riverhead Landmarks Preservation Commission GUIDELINES FOR ROOFING PURPOSE These Guidelines were prepared to assist property owners with information when considering the repair, alteration or installation of roofing. It is not intended that these Guidelines should replace consultation with qualified architects, contractors, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), Architectural Review Board (ARB) and applicable ordinances. This represents one of the few commercial buildings on Main Street with a highly decorative roof treatment. This Mansard roof is covered with three colors of fish scale slate installed in a decorative pattern and trimmed along its edges with painted metal flashing. A series of steeply pitched gable roof dormers with projecting eaves provide additional habitable space at the upper level. Also note the projecting roof cornice with the paired decorative brackets, typical of the Victorian period. These Guidelines were developed in conjunction with the Town of Riverhead’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) and Architectural Review Board Residential buildings, particularly those from the Victorian (ARB). Please review this information during the period, tend to have very complex roof forms that can include early stages of planning your project. Familiarity intersecting gables, dormers and towers. with this material can assist in moving a project quickly through the approval process, saving ROOFS applicants both time and money. A building’s roof provides the first line of defense The LPC and ARB encourage informal against the elements and its design greatly affects the informational meetings with potential applicants overall appearance of a building. Therefore, the who are considering a project that might include following functional and aesthetic concerns should be exterior changes to their properties.

  • Roofer's Guide
ROOFER’S GUIDE 2020 EDITION 2020 ROOFER’S GUIDE INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION The quality of a roofing system depends on several factors that must function together towards a common objective: ensuring the long-term performance of the waterproofing complex. The main role of a roof is to keep the building dry and protect it from the weather. In addition, the roof assembly must be designed to ensure continuous waterproofing through all elements of the building envelope. The point of contact of the roof and wall vapour barriers as well as the waterproofing of the various projections must therefore be addressed with the same care as the sealing of the roof field surface. The roof must withstand condensation and water vapour migration as well as rainfalls in order to prevent the assembly components from being contaminated. In addition to protecting against rainfall and vapour migration, the assembly components must be stable and well fastened to the structure. The fastening and adhesion methods must allow the assembly to withstand thermal cycles and live loads in order to limit the material deformation that could compromise the waterproofing. Beyond stability of the materials, the roof system must bear the normal negative pressures exerted by the wind. In order for a roof to meet long-term performance objectives while working as expected, other factors may be considered: The appropriate selection of materials The correct design of the assembly The proper installation of assembly components The regular maintenance of the roof The main purpose of the Roofer’s Guide is to present the best practices regarding the installation of an SBS-modified membrane system as recommended by SOPREMA.

  • Bottom to Roots to Roof Remodel Top Turns a Flawed House Into a Showplace
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT PROJECT SPOTLIGHT BOTTOM to Roots to roof remodel TOP turns a flawed house into a showplace By Wendy A. Jordan, Senior Contributing Editor hy not stop by?” thought Mary White. She and husband Bill White were re- searching remodelers for their 1953 split level, and a Remodelers Showcase W home — a project completed by Minneapolis design-build company TreHus Architects+Interior Designers+Builders — was just a mile down the street. She went to see the house, and something clicked. “I was impressed by the work,” recalls White, as well as “by the demeanor and profession- alism” of the TreHus representatives. They were not aggressive, but they were there to help and to show off their nice work. It was the right approach for me.” Two years later and after a bold residential transformation, White had praise for another Showcase home remodeled by TreHus — her own. No place but up The existing four-level, 2,032-square-foot house was no match for its outstanding location. In a sought-after neighborhood convenient to downtown Minneapolis, the property directly overlooked the Mississippi River. But the house failed to capture that view. Besides, the rooms were small, storage was poor, the kitchen was outdated and isolated, and there was no powder room. When the roof over the family room — a 1980s addition by the previous owner — began leaking and shingles started falling off, “We knew we couldn’t put off replacing the roof,” BEFORE White says. As long as that work was going to be done, the Whites decided to pursue “a cohesive plan to update the entire house.” Top of the wish list was a master suite.

  • Roofer Falls 20 Feet Through Rotten Roof
CONSTRUCTION INJURY NARRATIVE Roofer Falls 20 Feet through Rotten Roof INCIDENT FACTS REPORT #: 71-190-2020s REPORT DATE: January 6, 2020 INCIDENT DATE: September 3, 2016 VICTIM: 39 years old INDUSTRY: Roofing contractors OCCUPATION: Roofer SCENE: Storage building at manufacturing plant EVENT TYPE: Fall INJURY NARRATIVE A 39-year-old roofer was severely injured when he fell 20 feet through a rotten roof. He had 22 years of experience in the roofing industry and had been with his employer, a roofing contractor, for a year. He was a member of a four-person crew that had been tearing-off and replacing the flat (low pitch) roof of a manufacturing storage facility for a month. On the day of the incident, they were working to remove three layers of roofing materials to check for rotten spots. REPORT #: 71-190-2020s INJURY NARRATIVE Warning lines were set up near the roof’s edges and a safety monitor was used. Workers were not required to use personal fall protection while inside the warning lines. Outside of the warning lines, they were required to use a personal fall arrest system consisting of a full body harness with ropes tied-off to anchor points. Most of the visible rotten roof was in the area outside of the warning lines. The roofer was inside the warning lines near the roof ridge using a shovel to scrape off shingles and insulation. As he stepped backward, a patch of rotten roof gave way and he fell through, landing 20 feet below on wood flooring. He was severely injured and suffered numerous fractures and internal injuries.

  • The History of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers
The History of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers From the time man first emerged from the natural shelter of the cave, a roof has been the symbol of home and hearth. The primitive grass or twig roof bears little resemblance to modern roofing, yet it represents the first step in the evolutionary process that led to the development of protective covers that today we take for granted. In primitive days, it was important that every man know how to provide his family with shelter. A nomadic existence necessitated rapid construction of a protective cover. But, as men settled into more structured living, skilled craftsmen turned to constructing homes, where the protective cover was the roof. Such tradesmen were in great demand in those earlier times when a thatched roof required frequent repair due to weather and war. The development of roofing has paralleled the development of new structures needed for an increasingly permanent and stable population. As part of the systems and materials devised to protect homes from the elements, a special group of building tradesmen has evolved to meet today's roofing needs -- the journeymen roofers. Along with the waterproofers, their union brothers, these skilled craftsmen ensure that homes and businesses are protected from nature's whims. Where roofers sought to protect structures from the elements, they had little protection themselves. They were exposed not only to the elements on the job but to ruthless employers who felt little need to treat tradesmen with fairness and respect. These conditions persisted until the turn of the 20th century when two organizations were formed to represent roofers and related tradesmen.
