Saari Northwestern University, Departments of Mathematics and of Economics August, 1991 “We’ve been trying to tell you you’re wrong!” With this severe reprimand, a fourth- grade girl, hand on hip, expressed the class’ growing exasperation with the slow witted mathematics professor who couldn’t understand the obvious. Dr. Diane Briars, Director of Mathematics, invited me to discuss modern mathematics with the teachers and several student groups as part of the Pittsburgh Public Schools’ observance of the national “Mathematics Awareness Week.” It was easy to prepare for classes fromtheeighthgradeon–agrabbagofunexpectedexamplesfrom“chaos,” mathematical astronomy, properties of surfaces, and statistical paradoxes could illustrate mathematical themes while capturing their imagination. But I fought to disguise my growing panic when informed that I was to talk to a fourth grade class. What does one say to fourth graders? It didn’t help to discover on arrival at the East Hill’s Elementary School that the core of my intended audience, Ms. Chamberlain’s class of very young children, all were sufficiently short to inspire extreme caution while walking about. I have found that the mathematics of decision making – in particular, voting – serves as a useful vehicle to introduce a variety of mathematical concepts starting with elementary counting, to algebra and geometry, and then, on a research level, certain delicate mathe- matical symmetries. So, I figured I could survive my allotted forty minutes by describing a counting problem caused by a voting example. The posed problem involved an hypothetical group of fifteen children permitted to watch only one TV show for the evening.

    GUIDELINES FOR ROOFING Town of Riverhead Landmarks Preservation Commission GUIDELINES FOR ROOFING PURPOSE These Guidelines were prepared to assist property owners with information when considering the repair, alteration or installation of roofing. It is not intended that these Guidelines should replace consultation with qualified architects, contractors, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), Architectural Review Board (ARB) and applicable ordinances. This represents one of the few commercial buildings on Main Street with a highly decorative roof treatment. This Mansard roof is covered with three colors of fish scale slate installed in a decorative pattern and trimmed along its edges with painted metal flashing. A series of steeply pitched gable roof dormers with projecting eaves provide additional habitable space at the upper level. Also note the projecting roof cornice with the paired decorative brackets, typical of the Victorian period. These Guidelines were developed in conjunction with the Town of Riverhead’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) and Architectural Review Board Residential buildings, particularly those from the Victorian (ARB).     ROOFER’S GUIDE 2020 EDITION 2020 ROOFER’S GUIDE INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION The quality of a roofing system depends on several factors that must function together towards a common objective: ensuring the long-term performance of the waterproofing complex. The main role of a roof is to keep the building dry and protect it from the weather. In addition, the roof assembly must be designed to ensure continuous waterproofing through all elements of the building envelope. The point of contact of the roof and wall vapour barriers as well as the waterproofing of the various projections must therefore be addressed with the same care as the sealing of the roof field surface. The roof must withstand condensation and water vapour migration as well as rainfalls in order to prevent the assembly components from being contaminated. In addition to protecting against rainfall and vapour migration, the assembly components must be stable and well fastened to the structure. The fastening and adhesion methods must allow the assembly to withstand thermal cycles and live loads in order to limit the material deformation that could compromise the waterproofing. Beyond stability of the materials, the roof system must bear the normal negative pressures exerted by the wind. In order for a roof to meet long-term performance objectives while working as expected, other factors may be considered: The appropriate selection of materials The correct design of the assembly The proper installation of assembly components The regular maintenance of the roof The main purpose of the Roofer’s Guide is to present the best practices regarding the installation of an SBS-modified membrane system as recommended by SOPREMA.
