The British Wheel of Yoga BWY Guidelines for Teaching Yoga in Pregnancy Purpose: The purpose of the document is to give safely guidelines to teachers who may have a pregnant woman in their general classes. Let your students know that if they become pregnant you need to be informed (in confidence, of course). Pregnant women are generally advised not to attend a general yoga class before 15 weeks gestation, when the pregnancy is considered to be established. Safe Yoga practice in the first trimester would comprise gentle breathing, relaxation and meditation. Direct women to a dedicated Pregnancy Yoga class where possible, especially if they are joining a yoga class for the first time. Ensure that a pregnant woman in your class has informed her health professional about her attendance at a Yoga class. Although Yoga will help with any anxiety, all medical conditions need to be dealt with by the medical profession. Every pregnancy is unique. We need to encourage pregnant students to learn to listen to their bodies. How they feel is often their best guide to what they can and cannot do. Students may need to modify a pose or rest at any time. Blood sugar levels can dip more frequently in pregnancy. Although one is advised not to eat before doing Yoga, pregnant women may need to have a light snack before class. Ligaments and tendons may soften during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Those who are very flexible (often experienced yogis, gymnasts, dancers) should avoid overstretching and hyperextension of the joints. Students may need to bend their knees when moving in and out of asymmetric poses to protect the SI joints. -

Understanding Modern Yoga Pedagogy and Curriculum: Exploring Sense-Making by Senior Western Yoga Teacher- Trainers
UNDERSTANDING MODERN YOGA PEDAGOGY AND CURRICULUM: EXPLORING SENSE-MAKING BY SENIOR WESTERN YOGA TEACHER- TRAINERS A Thesis submitted by Andy Davies, MEd For the award of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 Abstract ABSTRACT This study explored senior Western Yoga teacher-trainers’ sense-making in the context of her or his Modern Yoga teacher-training programs. Through senior Western Yoga teacher-trainers’ sense-making of her or his interpretations and applications of non-Western Yoga philosophies and traditions, meaning-making was generated. Sense-making here denotes the participants’ understandings, while meaning-making refers to the understandings that I generated as the researcher. The term Modern Yoga is used in this study to represent a Western understanding and application of non-Western Yoga philosophies and traditions that are referred to here as Premodern Yoga. The aim of this research was to construct a greater understanding and appreciation of senior Western Yoga teacher-trainers’ considerations when conceptualising, planning and implementing Yoga teacher- training. The research questions focused upon the senior Western Yoga teacher- trainers’ spiritual-ethical reflections and her or his pedagogical and curriculum priorities. This research contributes significantly to the body of scholarship related to the pedagogical and curriculum world of Yoga teacher-training and Yoga teaching. In this trans-philosophical, transnational and transcultural research project, I have sought to disrupt various dichotomous understandings. These binaries were considered under two broader umbrella binaries: East-West and Mind-Body. I drew upon the Sanskrit language to construct neologisms to provide me with a scaffold with which to disrupt the limitations and preferential treatment of either/or thinking of Western and non-Western philosophies and meaning-making, while revealing contextually rich, non-binaristic meaning-making. -

PRIMERA PARTE EL YOGA COMO MEDICINA El yoga es un 99% de práctica y un 1% de teoría. —PATTABHI JOIS CAPÍTULO 1 EL YOGA COMO MEDICINA No importa que estés enfermo o débil, que seas joven, viejo o muy viejo, puedes tener éxito con el yoga si practicas con diligencia. —SVATMARAMA (HATHA YOGA PRADIPIKA) Si eres nuevo en el yoga, bienvenido. El yoga puede cambiarte la vida. Si ya practicas yoga pero quieres aprender más, quizá ya conozcas el potencial del yoga para cambiarte la vida. Si estás enfermo, puede ayudarte a sentirte mejor. Si tienes depresión o ansiedad, te sien- tes cansado todo el tiempo, eres adicto a alguna droga o te preocupa tu dolor de espalda, el yoga puede ayudarte a seguir el camino adecuado hacia la recuperación. Para los que padezcan problemas de salud crónicos como la artrosis, la diabetes, la esclerosis múltiple o el VIH/SIDA, la práctica regular del yoga puede ayudar a vivir mejor y, con toda probabilidad, a vivir más tiempo. Y los que sufran síntomas tem- porales –como dolor de cabeza por tensión muscular, sofocos o sinusitis– pueden encontrar alivio en posturas específicas, técnicas de respiración y otras prácticas del yoga. As a form of exercise, yoga increases flexibility and strength but it also has a positive effect on the mind and body overall. Yoga may be practiced by people of any age and fitness level and has the potential to be a lifelong practice. Vanda Scaravelli - Awakening the Spine Harper Collins, 1991 Vanda came to yoga after the age of 50 and continued the practice until she died at the age of 91. This book was the inspiration for beginning my yoga practice. It is simply and intelligently written and provides both an understanding of yoga and instructions for the basic postures or asanas. Donna Farhi - Bringing Yoga to Life: The Everyday Practice of Enlightened Living Harper, 2003 This book is about using yoga in your everyday life as a way of relating to yourself and the world around you. It does not contain any instructions on how to do the postures but it is very useful as a way of putting the practice of yoga in perspective. Erich Schiffman - Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness Pocket Books, 1996 Erich's book is both a discussion of what yoga is all about and a detailed guide to the postures or "asanas".
