Few events in the long history of international relations carry the significance of the first visit to the United States of the Em peror and Empress of Japan. Only once before has the reigning Emperor of Japan ventured forth from his beautiful island realm to travel abroad. On that occasion, his visit to a number of Euro pean countries resulted in an immediate strengthening of the bonds linking Japan and Europe.

  • The Stockbroker Who Saved 669 Czech Children from the Nazis Before WWII Is Awarded the Czech Republic's Highest Honor at the Age of 105
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/sir-nicholas-winton-receives-czech- republic-the-order-of-the-white-lion/ October 28, 2014 The stockbroker who saved 669 Czech children from the Nazis before WWII is awarded the Czech Republic's highest honor at the age of 105 Czech Republic's President Milos Zeman decorates sir Nicholas Winton with the highest Czech Republic's decoration, The Order of the White Lion in Prague, Czech Republic. PETR DAVID JOSEK, AP At a ceremony in Prague on Tuesday, Sir Nicholas Winton was awarded the Czech Republic's highest honor -- the Order of the White Lion. Winton, now 105 years old, was recognized by Czech president Milos Zeman for helping save 669 Czech children -- most of them Jewish -- from the Nazis on the eve of WWII. "It is so rare and so wonderful when a man who never gave a damn about honors gets one anyway," Bob Simon tells 60 Minutes Overtime. As Simon reported last April, almost 50 years passed before Winton spoke about what he'd done. Until that point, the children knew nothing about who saved them or how. With the help of co-producer Vanessa Fica, producer Harry Radliffe tracked down several of the children Winton saved, including 14-year- old Alice Eberstark. Now in her late 80s, Eberstark lives in Bethesda, Md. THE THINGS SHE CARRI60 MINUTESED OVERTIME At one point during her interview, Eberstark showed the 60 Minutes team several things her parents gave her just before she left on Winton's "kindertransport" with her two sisters. Some of the items were made by her mother, including an embroidered nightgown.

  • State and District Youth Showcase to Replace YAD for 2020 I Would Not Have Imagined in a Million Years That 2020 Would Turn out Like This
State Fraternal Director Frank Horak June 2020 SPJST YOUTH P.O. Box 100 - Temple, Texas 76503 | 800.727.7578 | 254.534.0681 State and District Youth Showcase to Replace YAD for 2020 I would not have imagined in a million years that 2020 would turn out like this. I have spent sleepless nights thinking about, What If’s? What if we can’t go to camp? What if we can’t have YAD? Then I thought about our ancestors who migrated to this country under adverse conditions — they faced many challenges, obstacles and even a pandemic in 1919. Somehow they survived and made their lives better. We can do the same! In my update letter on May 8 I had to let you know about canceling all State and District Youth Achievement Days. We are diligently working on an online program. I don’t want to call it YAD due to this is something different then we know. I like SPJST Youth Showcase. After having the virtual decorated rock contest with 155 entries from across the state — I see this would be a good way to keep our youth active and involved with SPJST. Please know we are still working on the timeline on how this process will work. Youth leaders I will be sending emails explaining the details. I will also send out a punchbowl card informing you of the important emails. I this packet you will find a document explaining the rules for the categories and contest. Flag Day Essay Contest Youth Leaders please encourage your youth to enter the Flag Day Essay! All SPJST youth between the ages of five and high school senior are encouraged to enter this year’s Flag Day Contest.

He was a fivestar general in the Dwight D. Eisenhower United States Army during World War II and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. He was responsible for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942–43 and the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45 from the Western Front. Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas, and raised in Kansas in a large family of mostly Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry by parents with a strong religious background.
