Eisenhower deposited these materials with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library on September 6, 1988 and signed an instrument of gift for the papers on October 12, 1999. Literary rights in the unpublished writings of Dwight D. Eisenhower are retained by the donor. Under terms of the instrument of gift, the following classes of items are withheld from research use: 1. Papers which constitute an invasion of personal privacy or a libel of a living person. 2. Papers which are required to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy, and are properly classified. Page 1 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE These albums contain awards and diplomatic documents presented to Dwight D. Eisenhower during his military and Presidential career. The documents date from 1911-1961 and were divided into three subseries which are described below. President Eisenhower gave the albums to his son, John S. D. Eisenhower who later donated them to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library. These documents were originally housed in clear acetate sleeves in black albums. They were arranged into subseries according to document type with each subseries arranged chronologically. Photostats were substituted for some original documents that John Eisenhower retained for his personal collection. As a preservation measure the documents were removed from the deteriorating acetate sleeves and rehoused in acid-free boxes and folders. Because of the size and condition of the original documents, researchers will be provided with facsimiles of the albums. The page numbers and arrangement of the albums has been retained within the facsimile collection. Each item is numbered with the original album and page numbers. In most albums there were items mounted on unnumbered pages or stored between pages. These have been assigned numbers corresponding with their location within the album. For instance, a document between pages 36 and 37 would be numbered by the archivist as 36A. Please note that the page numbers refer to individual items; some items, such as booklets, may consist of multiple pages. Page 2 Series Descriptions SERIES 1: Awards, Certificates, Honors, Memberships and Decorations Boxes 1-10 This series contains U.S. Army commissions, military decorations, service schools, honorary degrees from American and foreign universities, Foreign awards and decorations, honorary memberships to American organizations, honors from National organizations and honors from civic and regional organizations. The dates on the first album are 1911-1949, however, there are no documents dated earlier than 1915. This series also contains formal letters of presentation, translations of documents issued in languages other than English, ornate decorative envelopes, and other documents that accompanied the letters of letters of credence and recall.     The Greenall family and its service to Freemasonry By WBro Major Charles William Shand, OBE, BEM Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden and WBro Derek Hunt Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies Some of us here tonight had the honour of knowing WBro Major Charles William Shand, OBE, BEM, a perfect gentleman and an outstanding Freemason. When Charles died I assisted in sorting out some of his Masonic memorabilia and one of the items I found concerned the involvement of the Greenall family with Freemasonry in Warrington. I have worked on Charles’s original script, added to it and updated it for tonight’s presentation. If any one local family can claim to have had the biggest influence on Freemasonry in Warrington, the Province of West Lancashire, the United Grand Lodge of England and even stretching its involvement to Ireland, there can be no argument that it is the Greenall family. Two members of the family became Senior Grand Wardens of England and one became a Provincial Grand Master in Ireland. However, before going into the history of the Greenall family and Warrington Freemasonry, it is necessary to give a wider picture on Freemasonry in the town in general. It was in Warrington on 16 October 1646 that Elias Ashmole and Colonel Henry Mainwaring were made Masons, as recorded in Ashmole’s diary. No other meeting of that lodge are recorded. We have to move forward more than 100 years and to the Cock Inn, Bridge Street, when on 21 August 1755 a lodge was constituted as Number 40 on the register of the Antient, or Athol Grand Lodge, but it ceased to function and lapsed in December of 1756.

Having been personally involved in the acceptance on May 6, 1945 of the formal surrender of over 40,000 Wehrmacht (German Regular Army) and Schutzstaffel (SS) troops1, including a considerable number of high ranking general officers -- a day before the Unconditional Surrender of all German Forces was signed and three days before active operations were ordered to cease -- I contacted John “Mac” McAuliffe2 to determine if he had any information regarding what I consider to be an obvious discrepancy in our Division's history. It is interesting to note that a review of the official records contained in the National Archives pertaining to our Division, particularly those of the 347th Infantry and its 3rd Battalion, clearly reveal that a number of these surrendering Wehrmacht and SS troops began to enter our lines on May 7, two days before ALL active operations were to cease at 001B, 9 May, 1945 between the Germans and the Allied Expeditionary Forces (AEF).

    During World War I, the Croix de Guerre was awarded for bravery to military personnel and recipients of the Légion d'Honneur and Médaille Militaire. This decoration was established by the French Republic in 1915 and is awarded to soldiers, airmen or sailors or all ranks, officers included, and also to officers and men of Allied forces, mentioned in French Despatches, for an individual feat of arms mentioned in a Despatch from the general officer commanding an Army, Army Corps, Division, Brigade or the C.O. of a regiment or the corresponding unit of Naval forces. The different classes of despatches for which a recipient was awarded the cross may be recognized by the following emblems on the ribbon: Army Despatch - small bronze laurel branch (Palme en bronze); Army Corps Despatch - silver gilt star; Divisional Despatch - silver star; Brigade, Regimental or similar Unit Despatch - bronze star. Every mention is represented by its emblem, thus a man can wear the cross with a silver star and a bronze palm. For every five bronze palms he gets instead a silver palm. The award of the Légion d'Honneur carries with it a Croix de Guerre avec Palme. The ribbon is green ribbed with black and has seven red stripes. For bravery in the face of the enemy. It can be awarded more than once. Subsequent awards are denoted by bronze, silver, and gold insignia worn on the ribbon. In WW1, US Army personnel who were awarded the MOH also received the Croix de Guerre, avec palme, for the same action. The Fourragere, in the colors of the Croix de Guerre, representing two unit citations in the Orders of the Army, is authorized to be worn by all active members of the 9th Regiment.

While you were in high school, what was your interest in foreign affairs per se? I know you were talking politics with Mr. Frank Humphrey, Senator Hubert Humphrey's brother, at the Humphrey Drugstore in Huron, South Dakota, and all that, but how about foreign affairs? BINDENAGEL: I grew up in Huron, South Dakota and foreign affairs in South Dakota really focused on our home town politician Senator and Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Frank, Hubert Humphrey's brother, was our connection to Washington, DC, and the center of American politics. We followed Hubert's every move as Senator and Vice President; he of course was very active in foreign policy, and the issues that concerned South Dakota's farmers were important to us. Most of farmers' interests were in their wheat sales, and when we discussed what was happening with wheat you always had to talk about the Russians, who were buying South Dakota wheat.

WILLIAM MOHR ABOUT THE COVER There is nothing in front of the Infantry in battle except the enemy. The Infantry leads the way to attack and bears the brunt of the enemy's attack. The primary purpose of the Infan­ try is to close with the enemy in hand-to-hand fighting. On the side of a house, tommy gunners of this Infantry patrol, 1st Special Service Froce Patrol, one of the many patrols that made possible the present offensive in Italy by feeling out the enemy and discovering his defensive strength, fire from the window of an adjoining building to blast Nazis out. The territory of Ethiopia, in its entirety, is, from one end to the other, subject to the government of His Majesty the Emperor. All the natives of Ethiopia, subjects of the empire, form together the Ethiopian Empire. Art. 2. The imperial government assures the union of the territory, of the nation and of the law of Ethiopia. Art. 3. The law determines that the imperial dignity shall remain perpetually attached to the line of His Majesty Haile Selassie I, descendant of King Sahle Selassie, whose line descends without interruption from the dynasty of Menelik I, son of King Solomon of Jerusalem and the Queen of Ethiopia, known as the Queen of Sheba. Art. 4. The throne and the crown of the empire shall be transmitted to the descendants of the Emperor pursuant to the law of the imperial house. Art. 5. By virtue of his imperial blood, as well as by the anointing which he has received, the person of the Emperor is sacred, his dignity is inviolable and his power indisputable. He is consequently entitled to all the honors due to him in accordance with tradition and the present Constitution. The law decrees that anyone so bold as to seek to injure His Majesty the Emperor will be punished.
