It was on a double bill with Jacques Tourneur’s acknowledged film noir classic Out of the Past, which I liked a lot more than Hunter. The latter seemed over acted and strange to me, and I found it much easier to enjoy a film about a private detective who was lured into violence and crime by a beautiful femme fatale. Out of the Past seemed more realistic and cooler, because it had people smoking cigarettes in dimly lit rooms and because it was full of banter with sexual innuendo.

  • LOOKING BACK in HISTORY Happenings in the Cookeville Area As Recorded in the Pages of the Herald Citizen Newspaper, Cookeville, TN
WAY BACK WHEN: LOOKING BACK IN HISTORY Happenings in the Cookeville area as recorded in the pages of the Herald Citizen Newspaper, Cookeville, TN. By Bob McMillian 1940’s (Compiled by Audrey J. Lambert) http://www.ajlambert.com 1940 (January 3, 1940) The Cookeville City Commission has intentionally allowed the airport’s lease to run out because its location — in a cornfield — did not qualify it for a $150,000 federal grant needed to build a new facility. (January 11, 1940) Members of the Putnam County Court vowed to do better and begin collecting past due property taxes after local attorney Worth Bryant blasted the magistrates. He said some long past due taxes are not uncollectible due to the statute of limitations. The magistrates asked County Judge B. C. Huddleston and County Attorney W. K. Crawford to begin filing suites against landowners whose taxes are overdue. (January 11, 1940) There is no Cookeville Airport this week. The city commission let the lease run out. It was intentional. The city has been leasing a corn field two miles north of Cookeville for an airport, but there’s a move afoot to get a federal grant of up to $150,000 to build a full•fledged air facility with a first class runway. But the corn field doesn’t qualify for the grant, so the city commission decided to let it go while looking for a better site. Cookeville has high hopes for its airport. The city lies under the intersection of east•west and north•south air mail routes. “Planes fly over the city at frequent intervals during the day and night,” says the newspaper.

  • Film Reviews
Page 78 FILM REVIEWS Kill List (Dir. Ben Wheatley) UK 2011 Optimum Releasing Note: This review contains extensive spoilers Kill List is the best British horror film since The Descent (Dir. Neil Marshall, 2005). Mind you, you wouldn’t know that from the opening halfhour or so. Although it opens with an eerie scratching noise and the sight of a cryptic rune that can’t help but evoke the unnerving stick figure from The Blair Witch Project (Dir. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, 1999), we’re then plunged straight into a series of compellingly naturalistic scenes of domestic discord which, as several other reviews have rightly pointed out, evoke nothing so much as the films of Mike Leigh. (The fact that much of the film’s dialogue is supplied by the cast also adds to this feeling.) But what Leigh’s work doesn’t have is the sense of claustrophobic dread that simmers in the background throughout Wheatley’s film (his second, after 2009’s Down Terrace ). Nor have any of them – to date at least – had an ending as devastating and intriguing as this. Yet the preliminary scenes in Kill List are in no sense meant to misdirect, or wrongfoot the audience: rather, they’re absolutely pivotal to the narrative as a whole, even if many of the questions it raises remain tantalisingly unresolved. Jay (Neil Maskell) and his wife Shel (MyAnna Buring) live in a spacious, wellappointed suburban home (complete with jacuzzi) and have a sweet little boy, but theirs is clearly a marriage on the rocks, and even the most seemingly innocuous exchange between them is charged with hostility and mutual misunderstanding.

Preaching in the Darkness: The iN ght of the Hunter’s Subversion of Patriarchal Christianity and Classical Cinema Abstract Upon its release in 1955, The Night of the Hunter did not find favor among audiences or critics, who failed to appreciate Charles Laughton’s vision for the Davis Grubb’s bestselling novel of the same title. While poor marketing certainly played into the film’s colossal collapse at the box office, I believe there is a deeper reason behind the rejection of the film in the 1950s—its portrayal of women and the female voice. In The Night of the Hunter, Miz Cooper (Lillian Gish) ultimately defeats Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), the corrupt Preacher, through the use of her voice, and by doing so subverts the dominant patriarchal paradigms of American Christianity and classical cinematic form prevalent in the 1950s.
