Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Creative Arts UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN SYDNEY School of Communication Arts Institute for Culture and Society Principal Supervisor: Dr. Maria AnGel Co-supervisor: Prof. Hart Cohen 2014 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project has taken me seven years to complete and I would like to sincerely thank all the people who have, in one way or another, helped to make it possible. Despite all the difficulty I encountered, I found diverse kinds of support along the way, from friends, colleagues, family, experts and organisations, who have helped me persist with and conclude this project. A special thanks to Mestre Roxinho, Chiara Ridolfi, Elisabeth Pickering and 30 young refugees at Cabramatta High School for agreeing to be filmed so closely for such a long period of time. This was an expansive and difficult exercise in trust. I admire them for that. I want to acknowledge the generosity and expertise of the original academic supervisors Cristina Rocha, Hart Cohen, Megan Watkins, who have contributed to this project. Greg Nobel for having mediated the difficult moments along the way. I specially want to thank Dr. Maria Angel for having come onboard this project as my Principal Supervisor in the last year of my candidature. I am also very thankful for the support I received from volunteers and tutors who worked in the implementation of the project in 2010, and for the film equipment provided by the University of Western Sydney’s School of Communication Arts and the Institute for Culture and Society. The film component of this DCA was only possible because of this support. -

A Cognitive Approach to Gestural Life in Stephen Sondheim's Musical Genres
“MY ARM IS COMPLETE”: A COGNITIVE APPROACH TO GESTURAL LIFE IN STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S MUSICAL GENRES by Diana Louise Calderazzo AB, Smith College, 1999 MA, University of Central Florida, 2005 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2012 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH DIETRICH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS This dissertation was presented by Diana Louise Calderazzo It was defended on July 11, 2012 and approved by Marlene Behrmann, Professor, Department of Psychology, Carnegie Melon University Atillio Favorini, Professor, Department of Theatre Arts, University of Pittsburgh Kathleen George, Professor, Department of Theatre Arts, University of Pittsburgh Dissertation Director: Bruce McConachie, Professor, Department of Theatre Arts, University of Pittsburgh ii Copyright by Diana Louise Calderazzo 2012 iii “MY ARM IS COMPLETE”: A COGNITIVE APPROACH TO GESTURAL LIFE IN STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S MUSICAL GENRES Diana Louise Calderazzo, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2012 Traditionally, musical theatre has been accepted more as a practical field than an academic one, as demonstrated by the relative scarcity of lengthy theory‐based publications addressing musicals as study topics. However, with increasing scholarly application of cognitive theories to such fields as theatre and music theory, musical theatre now has the potential to become the topic of scholarly analysis based on empirical data and scientific discussion. This dissertation seeks to contribute such an analysis, focusing on the implied gestural lives of the characters in three musicals by Stephen Sondheim, as these lives exemplify the composer’s tendency to challenge traditional audience expectations in terms of genre through his music and lyrics. -

Susan Yeah, well, my heart wants to hurt you, but I'm able to control myself! How would you feel if I used your child support payments for plastic surgery? Every time we went out for pizza you could have said, "Hey, I once killed a man. " Okay, yes I am closer to your father than I have been in the past, the bitter ha tred has now settled to a respectful disgust. Lynette Please hear me out this is important. Today I have a chance to join the human rac e for a few hours there are actual adults waiting for me with margaritas. Loo k, I'm in a dress, I have makeup on. We didn't exactly forget. It's just usually when the hostess dies, the party is off. And I love you because you find ways to compliment me when you could just say, " I told you so." Gabrielle I want a sexy little convertible! And I want to buy one, right now! Why are all rich men such jerks? The way I see it is that good friends support each other after something bad has happened, great friends act as if nothing has happened. -

Julian Blake Gordon Spring 2014 MEDEA OF GAZA GORDON !1 GORDON !2 Research Summary A snapshot of Medea of Gaza as of March 7, 2014 ! Since the Summer of 2013, I’ve been working on a currently untitled play inspired by the Diane Arnson Svarlien translation of Euripides’ Medea. The origin of the idea was my Theater and Culture class with Nancy Hoffman, taken in the Spring of 2013. For our midterm, we were assigned to pick a play we had read and set it in a new location. It was the morning of my 21st birthday, a Friday, and the day I was heading home for Spring Break. My birthday falls on a Saturday this year, but tomorrow marks the anniversary, I’d say. I had to catch a train around 7:30am. The only midterm I hadn’t completed was the aforementioned Theater and Culture assignment. -
