The collection is intended for use in Rhode Island schools. Seven component areas are identified and serve as chapter titles. Each is designed to explore one or more of the themes focusing on creativity, diversity, and idealism- -three factors shaping the development of Rhode Island. Skills such as hypothesizing and data collecting are emphasized in each activity. The seven components include Time and Place, The Land and Us, Individual Rights and Responsibilities, Arts, All the People, Now and Then, and Famous Rhode Islanders. Each chapter coutains an introduction and overview, objectives of the unit, materials needed, and specific learning activities. Appendices include resource lists and bibliographies. The materials are easily adapted for use in both elementary and secondary classes. Although the guide is designed to be used in Rhode Island schools, it can be used as a model for other states.     They’re Everywhere: We interviewed prominent Rhode Islanders who now slumber beneath our soil As the veil between the worlds thins this Halloween night, this time-travelling Irishman stepped into the land beyond the horizon to learn more about Rhode Island’s illustrious departed. Julia Ward Howe, abolitionist, suffragist and poet; May 27, 1819 – October 17, 1910 Julia Ward Howe was an early and commanding voice of the suffrage movement. Her mother was a skilled wordsmith, a powerful skill for any young woman in the early 19th century, and inspired Howe to pick up the pen and eventually write the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” After the Civil War and the success of the abolitionist movement, Howe focused her passions on pacifism and women’s suffrage. She helped to establish the New England Women’s Club and the New England Woman Suffrage Association, later becoming president of the New England Women’s Club. She also went on to found the Association of American Women, as well as an extensive slew of foundations advocating for women’s education. In 1908, Howe was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She died at her home, Oak Glen, in Portsmouth in 1910. Vahram Papazyan, Armenian athlete; September 2, 1892 – March 6, 1986 In the summer of 1912, Vahram Papazyan was one of two Armenian athletes to represent the Ottoman Empire in the domain’s first appearance at the Olympic Games. A reputedly fine athlete, Papazyan participated in the men’s 800 meters and 1500 meters, and although he did not win any medals, became a cultural hero.

    24 Satellite Towns Introduction 'Satellite town' was a term used in the year immediately after the World War I as an alternative to Garden City. It subsequently developed a much wider meaning to include any town that is closely related to or dependent on a larger city. The first specific usage of the word ‘satellite town’ was in 1915 by G.R. Taylor in ‘ Satellite Cities’ referring to towns around Chicago, St. Louis and other American cities where industries had escaped congestion and crafted manufacturer’s town in the surrounding area. The new town is planned and built to serve a particular local industry, or as a dormitory or overspill town for people who work in and nearby metropolis. Satellite Town, can also be defined as a town which is self contained and limited in size, built in the vicinity of a large town or city and houses and employs those who otherwise create a demand for expansion of the existing settlement, but dependent on the parent city to some extent for population and major services. A distinction is made between a consumer satellite (essentially a dormitory suburb with few facilities) and a production satellite (with a capacity for commercial, industrial and other production distinct from that of the parent town, so a new town) town or satellite city is a concept of urban planning and referring to a small or medium-sized city that is near a large metropolis, but predates that metropolis suburban expansion and is atleast partially independent from that metropolis economically. CITIES, URBANISATION AND URBAN SYSTEMS 414 Satellite and Dormitory Towns The suburb of an urban centre where due to locational advantage the residential, industrial and educational centres are developed are known as "satellite or dormitory towns." It has a benefit of providing clean environment and spacious ground for residential and industrial expansion.

Arthur Fenner. If the former became more noted for his military exploits, the latter was more distinguished for commanding ability in the conduct of civil affairs. The Providence Cap- tain was less hasty and imperious in spirit than Standish, not so quick to buckle on the sword, but he may be pardoned for the possession of a more peaceable frame of mind. He certainly did not seek to make occasion for the practice of his military skill. It is generally admitted that Williams and the other colonists of our own plantation adopted and quite steadily pursued a more liberal and humane policy to- wards the Aborigines than prevailed in either of the colo- nies about her.( Fenner was not only a soldier, but was pos- sessed of statesmanlike qualities of no mean nature. He was also an expert engineer and^urveyDr. In his varied re- lations to town and colonial ^ife he shewed himself a man of admirable genius, with a mind well balanced and sagacious. His comprehensive qualities made him an energetic, shrewd and trustworthy leader in practical affairs. As the founder 6f Providence, as a leading actor in the beginnings of Rhode Island, and as one of the few famous Americans of Colonial times whose names will endure, Roger Williams is certainly a great historical personage, of whose life and times every pupil in our schools should have knowledge.
