    FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS ANNUAL REPORT 2008-09 5 ATHLETICS ANNUAL REPORT 2008-09 1 Message from the Director of Athletics ver the last year or so, I have been doing some major renovations to my home. During that time, I have become quite Oadept at measuring things to make sure all the dimensions are accurate so that all the pieces fit properly in place. Because of this, I can wield a ruler, a yard stick, and a tape measure with great dexterity these days, which has helped to make things move along on schedule. While the daily changes are most times not noticeable, the “before and after” photos are dramatic. And, there are those interim stages where change becomes apparent. Like home improvement projects, college athletics can also be measured when it comes to success. Some years, the measurements of improvement are not noticeable because injuries, inexperience, or coaching changes can mask a team’s growth. But that “before and after” view can be dramatic because talent and experience come Director of Athletics Gene Doris presents Ahna together to create a championship season. Johnson ’09 with her MAAC Tournament MVP award. This year, I took that “after” photo which showed that Fairfield’s athletic success was boundless. Four teams won their respective Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2008-09, while several other teams garnered success by winning a regular- season conference championship. All these championships led Fairfield University to the coveted MAAC overall Commissioner’s Cup championship, which is given to the conference school with the best overall athletic success in a given year.

Hutcherson: Good afternoon. Brown: It’s indeed a pleasure to be here, be in your home and be able to talk to you, one of my heroes for so many years, a fellow Californian. If we could just start by you stating your full name at birth and your birth place and birth date, please. Hutcherson: Robert Howard Hutcherson. I was born January 27, 1941, in Los Angeles, but I grew up in Pasadena, California. Brown: But you say you were born in Los Angeles. Hutcherson: Um-hmm. Brown: Is that where your parents were living at the time of your birth? So it worked out, because they could be there. My mom had me very late in her life, in those days, and so it was better for my father to take my mother to the Los Angeles hospital, because he was – his work, he was a bricklayer.

    Fight or Flight: Multicultural Student Life at St. Olaf College Mike Shoemaker and Phala Hoeun EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SETTING St. Olaf College is a predominantly white, private, liberal arts college with about 3,000 students. It is located in Northfield, Minnesota, has a cherished Norwegian heritage, and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Students of color account for about nine percent of the student body. PROBLEM Numerous research accounts have illustrated the difficulties facing students of color at predominantly white colleges and universities. Our intent was to explore the dynamics of multicultural student life at St. Olaf College, and what might be done to improve it. METHODOLOGY The sample population included first-year through senior year students of color at St. Olaf who are associated with Student Support Services (SSS), the Multicultural Affairs and Community Outreach office (MACO), and/or multicultural organizations on campus. We interviewed fifteen students from this population, as well as six faculty/staff members involved in multicultural student life on campus. To select these students, we conducted a snowball sample, consulting students involved in the aforementioned groups, created a list, and then extracted a stratified random sample from the list. Faculty and staff members were chosen at the recommendation of the students interviewed, and were not necessarily of color. OBSERVATIONS Students of color generally face considerable cultural isolation, experiences with racial and ethnic stereotyping, and even discrimination at St. Olaf. They are expected to educate the broader St. Olaf community about multicultural issues, to be tokens of diversity, to represent their racial or ethnic group, and still be able to gain the most out of their St.

This is not necessarily a problem as plenty of people working in the industry are totally useless. Some of them are Executives working in the Studios. If you don't know what this means, go to the part on Studio Executives, although it may not be very helpful, as I've never quite worked out what they do. Some people who work on the floor, i. e. actually making the film, are totally useless but they usually don't last very long, unless they are either very enthusiastic or very entertaining or very pretty or all three. I'm totally useless at everything but I'm willing to learn. Now this is much better. Modern schooling damages more people than it helps*. This is because the grade system means that you are never first. And if you were, you wouldn't be reading this.
