PRESIDENTS’ REPORT

Here we are, 2019, I trust you all had a pleasant Xmas and New Year and have used the break in our club activities to refresh and do all those pesky maintenance tasks on your cars to get them ready for all of the runs this year. We have a very busy year behind us and an even busier one ahead. We had a wonderful time at our 50th Anniversary celebration and finished the year with a festive Christmas Lunch. This year we are hosting the Queensland Historic Motoring Council (QHMC) Annual Rally in conjunction with our own Autorama; a full weekend is planned from Friday 3rd through to Sunday 5th May, a venue for the Saturday night dinner dance is yet to be finalised but a good weekend is guaranteed for all. Entry forms will be sent out once the venues have been selected; the numbers will be limited so make sure you get in before members of other clubs take up all the available spots. Of course we also have our annual Swap Meet in July, as usual we will need quite a lot of volunteers to assist with the setting up and running of the event. Without the income from this weekend the club wouldn’t run as it does so if you can help please do. Cars & Coffee meets are getting bigger and better, we get to see a myriad of different cars each month so it’s a good morning out. Our food-stall has proved to be a success allowing us to raise over $700.00 for the 50th function and this year all monies raised will go towards subsidising members meals at organised events. On a personal note, Karen and I are working hard to punch out the magazine, repair the car-trailer and make sure our club is running as it should be. It’s a pleasure for us to do what we do for you all; our club is not just about cars, it’s also about people and we have some wonderful folks involved in what we do as a group, so if you’ve not been active of late I would urge you to get out and enjoy your vehicle and the pleasure they give. Cheers Col

John Wood It is with sadness that we say goodbye to one of our Life Members, John Wood. John passed away on the 9th November 2018, the night before our 50th Anniversary Dinner. He was a man who had a very colourful life, quite the entrepreneur and could spin a good story. Prior to John coming to Australia from England, he did National Service time in the RAF, owned a Butcher Shop, then a Country Club, a Bakery, then part owner of a villa/ restaurant complex in Spain, he then worked as a builder. Those are only a few of his exploits. John was also an avid soccer and cricket player and stated he met Keith Miller and Sir Donald Bradman in 1945. John had owned numerous models of cars over the years and found he enjoyed Car Rallying, in which one year he, with his co-driver, won the European Martini rally. John had travelled the world extensively and has had many stories of his and his late wife Wendy’s adventures which he has put into a book for his family to remember him by. John was very active in the club until his illness prevented him from participating any longer. He has had the role of President, assistant Rally Director to David Mitchell before taking on Rally organiser for many years before John Talbot succeeded him. You couldn’t have met a nicer man. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Canungra 100th year School Carnival 28th October 2018 We had a request from the Canungra State School for some cars to be on display for their 100th year carnival in conjunction with the Make Canungra Pink Day fund raiser for Cancer. Six cars rocked up in all, five in the morning with Peter Stoveld joining in just before midday. Our cars participated in the grand parade around the oval, with all the locals taking a keen interest in our cars. Lucky for us we had the gazebo as it turned out quite a hot day. Our President got into the spirit of the day at the hair colouring stall by getting his hair sprayed in the club colours. Those in attendance were - Col & Karen Hayes, David Mitchell, Richard & Leonie Brown, Peter Amey, Keith & Jean Bailey, Chris Orton and Peter Stoveld.

Mid Week Halloween Run 31/10/18

Well we started off with a good show of cars, with a pleasant run up to Tallowwood Park for morning tea, where Harry Darke won the draw for the free lunch. On the second part of our journey, in the Halloween Spirit, things began to unravel. Could it be goblins spirited some of the navigators into reading the wrong directions, as we had drivers go every which way. A few missed the Baileys Mountain Rd turn off, and others turned in the wrong direction on Stapylton- Jacobs Well Road, with us finally ending up at a boat ramp. Luckily Dennis had his Satnav which took us straight to the Wattle Hotel where four of the teams where already there. Then four more lost souls arrived thirsty for a drink. It made for good conversation on who took what route. All enjoyed the good tucker that the hotel provides. A group of MG’s followed John for a run on the way home, where others opted for the highway. As always, thanks for the run John, Hobgoblins and all.

The French Tracbar Dundee

Tracbar Dundee stands for TRACBAR being the nickname of the vintage Citroen cars, and Dundee to pay tribute to Mick Dundee very famous in France. The 55 year old Frenchman Eric Massiet Du Biest has spent his entire life touring the world and allowing hundreds of families to live their adventure dreams. He used to live at Tamborine Mountain Qld where he was nicked name Mr Frogg.

Massiet du Biest with his family joined 11 other French families in an epic cross-country journey from Perth to the Gold Coast. They shipped their Citroens over from France and once the adventure was finished in Brisbane the cars were shipped back to France, except three of them who decided to drive back home from Bangkok to Paris, via Lhassa, Kashgar, Samarqand, Tehran, Istanbul and Zagreb.

On Sunday 5 August 2018 the French families in their 60 – 80 year old Vintage Citroen cars started from Fremantle Esplanade for the 30 days 7,500 km journey across Australia, via York, Wave Rock, up to Kalgoorlie, Laverton and the 4 days Victoria desert track to Uluru, then crossing Australia towards Brisbane via Coober Pedy, Maree, Innamincka,

Thargomindah, Lightning Ridge, Tamborine Mountain and finishing at Paradise Point.

Peter Amey with his Citroen “FiFi”, along with three other members from the Qld Citroen Club, met up with the French contingent at Tamborine Mountain. Even though the French could not speak much English they were able to communicate well on the love of their cars and their journey. I don’t think that it would have been all easy going for them and whether they knew how harsh our outback can be but good on them, and I hope they had some good stories to tell back home about our country.

Cars N’ Coffee

Nov17th The continued success, popularity and varied mix of vehicles is a testament to the wonderful camaraderie and general cohesiveness of the local car community on the Gold Coast. It truly cannot be done without YOU! November’s meet was no different from the others with a fantastic mix of all makes and models. The coveted Car of the Meet went to an absolutely stunning 1929 Marmon Roosevelt. This was the Marmon’s maiden outing after and long and extensive renovation process. It certainly looked better than new. Kudos to Garry Collins on a gem of a car. Now we start the salacious details of the meet. Bentley and Maserati GC were present with their brand new offerings in the guise of the GT W12 for the former and the V6 Lavente for the latter. They really are stunning cars. An out of this world Lamborghini Liberty Walk Huracan Roadster in very striking purple thunderously put on a show. This Huracan is the only one of its kind in Austra- lia and certainly attracted a crowd with its flame spitting exhaust and its party trick of lowering itself to sit on the tarmac. Beside it was a Rosso Ferrari 348 a supercar in its own right but somehow it was slightly overshadowed. Another prancing horse was also present in the form of the 360 Spyder. American muscle cars like the Corvette Stingray, modern Mustangs, Firebird Trans-Am and the land yacht Lincoln

Continental. I especially liked the highly original GT350 Fast- back. A pair of Black Cruisers comprising of Cadillac Coupe and Lincoln 4 Door, both slammed and sinister looking. The Australian contingent had a very good representation with plenty of special ’s, and Chryslers. There were multiple Monaro’s, beautiful Mopar Valiant Coupe, Charger and Concourse winning 58 Wagon. The striking red VH SS was a real peach and so was the VK Calais. Who can forget the Germans with some uber-cool Porsches made up of a GT3, a 996.2 Turbo Gemballa, a 986 550 Spyder homage, and 987. Mercedes had a AMG CLA45, SLK55, SLK320, R107 SL450 and several BMW’s. Based on present ownership, so too were the Rolls Royce’s comprising of a Corniche DHC, FHC and Cloud III (I am going to receive an earful for this one!). Herbie also came to the party looking magnificent in his racing colours facing a split window Kombi with lo and behold a Subaru water cooled engine in the rear. As always, honourable mentions were the Ford Fairlane, Baby Austin, Volvo 1800, Volvo 164, Holden Premier, Holden HG, , Rusted out Chevrolet Truck, Thames UTE, Willy’s Jeep, Mazda Bullet, Mini UTE, PRB, Datsun Z’s and cool little Lotus Elise.

December 15th

The last meet of 2018 was just beautiful. The weather was fine, the people were fine and the cars finer. It closed off 2018 with a figurative backfiring “BANG”! The car of the meet went to a beautiful 1950 Chevrolet Coupe. The owner is a member of the Kustoms Car Club and there were plenty of them there on the day resulting in some very beautiful Classic American muscle. The Chevy featured a chopped roof, glossy black paint and skulls aplenty. It was just so sinister that it was so cool. Once again Bentley Gold Coast turned up with their latest, yet to be registered 2019 Continental GTC. It had a whopping W12 and was certainly a beast. Parked right next to it was a Coral red ’58 S1, basically the grand-daddy To continue the theme (Bentley now being German), we had a relatively large Porsche gathering. To start off with, a gorgeous Red 997.2 with plates that read “INTENT”, a 964, my personal favourite 914 in cool rally detail, 996.2 Gemballa Turbo GT and 996.1 from Vic – now permanently on the coast. 2 Merc SLK320’s, AMG Merc SLK55, ’88 Series 3 BMW, an M3 and Audi TT rounded off the Germans. Beautiful Camaro’s, Corvette’s, a whole host of Mustangs running most model years, several Chevrolet Trucks, a Matt Black Studebaker,Plymouth Convertible, pimped out Lincoln Continental and who can forget the ’30 Ford Truck with painted on rust patina and vintage bicycle in its tray.

British cars were Ford Cortina Wagon, ye ‘ol faithful Defender, Thames Panel , 2 x Vauxhalls, ’55 Commer Ute, recently restored Stag and finally on the road after 20 years off it – Jag XJS V12. This particular Jag had 70’s Gold paint with Gold minilites. It was just so cool, oozing style especially when it was surrounded by some exceptional vehicles on either side such as the Monza Red Ferrari 360 Spyder on one and a Sky Blue Corvette Stingray on the other. Thank you to our Volunteers for November, Bernadette Amey, Laurence Crediton, John Talbot and David Mitchell along with the unknown cook. Due to the uncertainty of the weather we first cancelled for the December Meet until the morning of the event which saw us have a last minute rush to set up and start cooking with the help of (as usual) Graham Tattarsall along with Gary Cosgrove, Barry Chinnery and Chris Orton.

Volunteers Required

The club has a Bacon and Egg and Sausage Sandwich stand at the monthly Cars N Coffee meets to feed the hungry entrants and to raise some money for various causes e.g. Drought-relief our 50th Anniversary celebration and subsidised events. To-date the same people have been manning the tent but it’s about time we had more volunteers to lighten the load. It’s a good day with lots of interaction with fellow car enthusiasts and we usually sell out of food by about 09:30 so it’s not a long day. If you wish to assist contact Col on 0409 825 913, you may even get a free breakfast!!

Anniversary Weekend

A big thank you go to our Anniversary Committee (Bernadette Amey, Don MacTaggart, John Talbot, Margaret Hession and David Heaney (not pictured) for a job well done putting on a great 2-day event. We had 100 members and guest attend our 50th Anniversary Dinner.

The weekend started with our Dinner night where members and guests, all looking very dapper, enjoyed nibbles on arrival at the Mermaid Quality Hotel. The assortment of eats was very impressive and whetted the appetite for what was to come.

We were soon ushered up to the function room where our President (Col Hayes) welcomed members and guests presenting all with a sample bag of goodies which contained the 25th Anniversary Booklet along with a copy of the 50th Anniversary Booklet, commemorative badge and a commemorative cup. With the proceedings started the President congratulated Margaret Hession on the fine job she did compiling together the 50th Anniversary Booklet which would have been a mammoth task. It could have been a number of chapters to compile on everyone and every activity that the club has been involved, instead she selected stories from past Cranckhandles and sorted them in order; this would have been a huge task. Congratulation also went to our award winning artist Sirilak (Nee) Shepherdson for the cover page paintings depicting several cars ranging from Vintage to the Classics.

The president then honoured our life - members, four of who were in attendance: Graham Tattersall, Peter Jones, Margaret Hession and Bob Simm. Those unable to attend were Peter Harris and Peter Hetherington.

Past Presidents in attendance were then honoured– David King, Richard Winslett, Terry Hobson (now President of the Restores Club), Trish Hanley, Graham Cogzell, David Mitchell and Bob Theobald.

The President from the Gold Coast MG Car Club, Peter Johnston, made a speech congratulating the club on its 50 years. Peter now is also a member of the GCAAC.

President Terry Hobson from the Automobile Restorers Club Nerang made a speech of congratulations and presented a plaque to our President.

After all speeches were over we enjoyed a lovely meal while our Pianist Kerry Stokes played us some soothing music

. To finish the night off we were entertained by the Bush Poet Bob Dever aka the Mudgeeraba Budgerigar with some funny poetry and a rendition on the Didgeridoo. Crankhandle News

David King had taken a lot of very good photos of couples at the night’s festivities, which can be seen on our face book page. If you would like a copy of the photo please contact David.

The next morning 11th November, bright and early for members and guests, John Talbot had put together a run for us in mind that it was Remembrance Day. We departed the Mermaid Quality Hotel car park at 8:15am for a pleasant drive north through the Hinterland of the Gold Coast before turning south going to the Public School at Tyalgum where the P&C put on a beautiful spread for morning tea. It was a very picturesque place.

Crankhandle News

We said our goodbye’s then drove through Tyalgum down through some lovely countryside at a leisurely pace to Ocean Shores Country Club for our lunch which was going to be very small after all the morning tea we had. Then it was time to say goodbye to our guests and friends until the next event and our Anniversary Committee can put their feet up and relax after a job well done.

A thank you and Congratulations on the 50th card was received from Mel and Judy Frey who were not able to attend the festivities. We wish them well.

At this time I would like to thank all those members who have helped in the past and don’t usually get a mention. That is the Treasurers, Rally organiser’s and Autorama organiser’s, function/catering organiser’s which are all very time consuming and sometimes stressful jobs. Also, all those members who are constantly there to pitch in. So many have given their time and effort and it is these people who make our club, without their contribution there would be no club. Thank you.
