Planning for this event is now fully underway with quite a few people having sent in their RSVP forms already which I look forward to seeing you all at the event!! is very encouraging Esther Robertson ([email protected])

A few things to keep in mind for those who haven’t yet sent in their forms. We are unable to provide allocated seating at the lunch. Our recommendation is that you arrange who you are wanting to sit with ahead of time and arrange for one of those people to ‘save the seats’ at the table. We apolo- gise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The deadline for RSVP forms is March 8 th . This is to allow us time to plan exactly what we are wanting to do on the day, and to plan for any dietary requirements. We will try to cater for forms received after this date, but please be aware that we may not be able to. Those mem- bers affected will be contacted directly if this happens.

At this stage, we are hoping to have a slide show of club

I parked my Demo, en- tered the showroom - dominated by the grand central stair- Acase– where there were two offices in the corner for Sales Managers. Under and around the staircase were four lounges used by salesmen to conduct their business. It seemed more like a Hotel Foyer. New BMC stock was stored one level down Mill Street.

Around 9am team members headed off for morning tea, beckoning me to follow. Four Morris 1100’s and one Mini took off up to the high rise Government building in Kings Park Road, up to the staff cafeteria on the top floor - what a view - coffee and cake was collected and paid for. When would we be challenged? Per- haps being regular visitors, staff thought we were staff!

Those on floor duty, knew the regular visitors ascending the Grand Central Staircase to visit Charlie Angel, the Big Boss. One of these men, Kevin Parry, asked who the new salesman was and introduced himself. I realised this charming man owned Parry’s Department Store. In conversation I mentioned Sandra and I had been looking for a lounge suite. That morning he picked Sandra up in his Rolls, drove to his showroom in West Perth, where, after coffee, a lounge was chosen. On leaving he asked if Sandra would like to drive the Rolls for the trip home. She declined ex- plaining she had only just got her drivers license, and preferred her $40 Morris Minor!!

We could have been in Downtown New York. Time flew by, finally we all scurried back to the showroom looking a bit sheepish, just in time to receive any sales leads. It was time to find out where “THE NEXT ONE” was and to “GET ON WITH IT” Better phone Sandra, not sure what time I would get home! Wonder what the new lounge looks like? Garry Collier

However, it turns out that they were originally made by a Frenchman of that name, Albert Champion, who later lost the right to use his name on the products - so he switched to making better ones, which he registered as AC spark plugs, the letters being his initials. Details of the intricate spark plug saga are in The Fast Times of Albert Champion, a 460 -page hard cover by Peter Joffre Nye and published by Prometheus Books. It’s a lot more than a yarn about auto electrics. Rather, it’s a most comprehensive and intriguing tale that takes in the development of pneumatic tyres, the origin of the motor car and how an urchin from the slums of Paris in the wake of the Franco -Prussian war rose to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the automotive world. Albert Champion was born in 1878, before the first motor car arrived on the cobblestoned streets of Paris. As a 12 -year -old, he earned a few francs riding a monocycle to attract crowds to city shops. He later be- came a bicycle racer, in an era when that sport attracted huge crowds to the velodromes. His gritty performances won him a place with Clement Cycles, then the most innovative of bike manufac- turers, where Adolphe Clement taught him the fundamen- tals of business and publicity. He was soon winning races of national and inter- national importance, including the French national cycling championship, and was the first to use petrol engines, from DeDion -Bouton, in his pacing bikes. That aroused the interest of a US motorbike mak- er, who invited Champion to join his company, and to bring a few of those French engines along. It also allowed young Albert to illegally escape national service in France, and he arrived in the US at a time of the birth of a new global transportation era, with boundless opportunities for an ambitious and able lad with a devilish genius. Page 14 Early Auto February 2019 A Triumph-ant Story Happy New Year to all my Happy Trumpy enthusiasts. Not sure where last year went but it's very scary looking back on the past 12 months my mind cannot get around the speed the 12 months ew by. However all was not lost, I did achieve quite allot on my Pre War Triumphs.

My rst achievement was a motor rebuild on my 1929 Super 7, and a usual it was not just a motor rebuild. I took the me to dy up the clutch and also sent the Magneto to the last remaining Magneto specialist le in WA. The result was a big PLUS, apparent- ly the Magneto was out of ming and had a few other issues that caused a lack of a strong spark causing plugs to connually fowl up. With that issue xed I have a spark that is very strong and long. The motor was just completed in me to take part in the Pre - War Club 20th Anniversary Run to York and surrounding areas.

The Triumph Super 8 that I have been working on and o for the past 20 odd years has made signicant progress this year and I am very pleased to inform you aer a week of ming issues (I Blame The Mechanic, yes myself) the motor red up. Even more pleasing the motor sounds very sweet, with good oil pressure I felt very comfortable to drive the chassis down the street to en- sure the remainder of the mechanics kept up with the motor. All good so me to put the body on for the last me.

As you can see I have decided to run with a Fabric Body. The simple reason for that decision is the original body panels were not in good shape and would need a body builder to make new panels, my result with the fabric body was quite good so I felt quite condent I could get a good result with the 8. So Far So Good.

You may ask what about the Gloria well it's me to rebuild the gearbox this year so next month out comes the gearbox and put some new bearings in and maybe a new clutch.

Our Christmas was quiet although we did have a tradition- So, we start al lunch at our place with family and friends and a few yet another glasses of wine. Our Christmas party was once again a great evening with Richard Whitehead everyone enjoying themselves, the food was great, the company great and thank you everybody for making my Brother and his Wife welcome. They went back home with some good memories.

The Beyond Blue run was a great success as it always is. Loads of cars of all types were on display including a great line up of Blue Mustangs. They did look spectacu- lar. I took my 1931 Chrysler CM6 which is the only blue car I have. The entertainment consisted of a young lady pulling a truck which was some feat I can tell you. There were Morris Dancers doing their thing in the street with loads of people joining in and of course raffles, stalls and the pub for lunch and the odd drinkie, not many though because we were all driving. It was a lovely day and well done to the organisers.

This is enough (Thanks Steve Newbold for the period ad below—Editor) of a 'Bother" but is also exacerbated when these members are also actively supporting partners and family members. Happy to report that as far as I know all are Home again and we wish you all the best. Its a New year so lets hope for a smoother Run in 2019 and into the future. Although we have not been attending events a few of us have managed to get our cars out of the sheds (Even on 40 deg days) with the excuse of "Looking At" a car or cars for sale. Strange that one member who came just to look actually had a set of transfer papers with him at the time. Suffice to say that we finally have a "Hunter" in the Section and it's "A Looker". Just be careful that the Little Minx that has been your partner for a few years does not get neglected and jealous Len. Following up on a lead another member asked his father to travel to Geraldton to "Look At" a 1929 or 30 Commer truck ( Small lorry) and you guessed it, he went with a suitable trailer and tow unit and this Commer is now nicely under cover in Perth waiting for restoration. A Humber Vogue was spotted by a fellow VCC member and we are now arranging to rescue this from its Gar- den Art Status and get it under cover for a future project. Quick update on a Hillman Gazelle that we saved from Garden Art duties has now been Stripped, Blasted, Rust Cut out, Panelled and Painted with the engine currently being re- built in preparation for a trip to Wagga Wagga in 2020. Anyone interested in an English Model Series 1V Snipe ( Bucket Seats Power Steering etc) there is one on Gumtree in Perth. Alterna- tively get in touch with the HRGS Secretary who has details and may even have photos. Most like- ly only a Parts Car or a very big project.

“All -Electric Cars in Perth 1914 & 2015” -

Deceased car enthusiast, electrical engineer, and VCC member, Jim Lissiman, had converted a petrol -engined Mustang to electric power. Driving it reminded me of the gentle movement I experienced as a kid in Perth’s trolley buses. Smooth, peaceful and slow - but never exciting! Trolley buses were powered from overhead mains power but the Mustang carried its batteries. So, the driver was always conscious of the great drain his right foot was putting on the storage of electrical ‘juice’ - and the gauge on the dashboard confirmed it! Seated in the 1914 Detroit Electric, I expected the same - and it was. So I took my mind back to Edison’s gramophones; hand -wound washing machines; ‘long drop’ toilets; the hand -operated meat grinder mum had, and the chloroform we endured during surgery (and were sick from for days afterwards) which made me think that the ‘soft’ speed of this Detroit was not too bad. I watched Curator, John McLean, adjust the Detroit’s Forward -Reverse lever, and steer with his ‘spare’ hand. I enjoyed the boudoir -like interior decor the ladies would have loved to ride in. Then, seated in the Tesla S 70D sedan, ensconced behind the wheel, I expected the same - BUT what differ- ence a 100 years of technology makes! Not only was the car electric but the air was! The S was happy to leap into action like a sports car, “You know,” said Perth owners John and Shirley Hall, “it is #02 - Detroit Electric & Telsa inside New Whiteman Park classed as a sports car!” With the full charge put into all its Museum - image by John McLean; multiple batteries under the floor, it can easily outpace a Ferrari up the racing track! Let me drive one, PLEASE! The only car noises I could hear were the air condi- tioner and an occasional tyre. Everywhere around me I was surrounded by little ‘beeps’ and similar, gentle comput- er -generated noises - to alert me to my speed relative com- pared with road signs we had just passed that the car had read! The dashboard -control centre carried data on almost anything I needed right throughout my life, including GPS, discharge on the batteries meter if one was rather heavy on the accelerator and one’s memorised seating position. Jokingly, I asked if I could watch TV on the huge screen, and also use it as a PC - John replied, “In the USA, yes, but not here, for the Australian Govt will not approve those two items!” To which I silently said, ‘Lift your game, Prime #03 - Driver's Dashboard 'Gauges' Minister!’ image by A John Parker; The Tesla S 70D was STUNNING in every way - quiet; a voluptuous body shape; really gorgeous colour; lovely trim; great fitment of components, and tomorrow’s incredible technology today! #04 - Tesla Home Charging The production of such cars is technology of the Station - image by A John 2000+ era.
