DOI: 5 The Clergy at the Courts of George I and George II STEPHEN TAYLOR In the years between the Reformation and the revolution of 1688 the court lay at the very heart of English religious life. Court bishops played an important role as royal councillors in matters concerning both church and commonwealth. 1 Royal chaplaincies were sought after, both as important steps on the road of prefer- ment and as positions from which to influence religious policy.2 Printed court sermons were a prominent literary genre, providing not least an important forum for debate about the nature and character of the English Reformation.

THE ARCHBISHOPS OF CANTERBURY And yet — in fact you need only draw a single thread at any point you choose out of the fabric of life and the run will make a pathway across the whole, and down that wider pathway each of the other threads will become successively visible, one by one. — Heimito von Doderer, DIE DÂIMONEN “NARRATIVE HISTORY” AMOUNTS TO FABULATION, THE REAL STUFF BEING MERE CHRONOLOGY “Stack of the Artist of Kouroo” Project Archbishops of Canterb HDT WHAT? INDEX ARCHBISHOPS OF CANTERBURY ARCHBISHOPS OF CANTERBURY 597 CE Christianity was established among the Anglo-Saxons in Kent by Augustine (this Roman import to England was of course not the Aurelius Augustinus of Hippo in Africa who had been in the ground already for some seven generations — and therefore he is referred to sometimes as “St. Augustine the Less”), who in this year became the 1st Archbishop of Canterbury, and one of the things this meant was that fruit orchards would be established for the monasteries. Despite repeated Viking attacks many of these survived. The monastery at Ely (Cambridgeshire) would be particularly famous for its orchards and vineyards. DO I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION? GOOD. • Lambeth Palace Library Research Guide Places of Confirmation of Election of Archbishops of Canterbury
Lambeth Palace Library Research Guide Places of Confirmation of Election of Archbishops of Canterbury By tradition St. Mary Le Bow, where the Court of Arches sat, became the customary place for the confirmation of the election of Archbishops and Bishops. At the Restoration the tradition was not immediately revived: Juxon’s election was confirmed in the Henry VII Chapel in Westminster Abbey and Sheldon’s in Lambeth Palace (see John Evelyn’s account). But from the confirmation of Sancroft’s election in 1678 until the early 20th century, the ceremony was always held in St. Mary Le Bow. A change was made in 1903 with the confirmation of the election of Randall Davidson. To prevent protests against the opinions of the elected Bishop or Archbishop which had occurred at some previous ceremonies of confirmation at St. Mary Le Bow, the form was modified and the location was transferred to Church House, Westminster - Davidson, as Bishop of Winchester, had been one of the Commissioners for the confirmation of the election of his predecessor, Frederick Temple, and having witnessed the protest against Temple’s views had written to the Guardian calling for a review of the ceremony. The precedent set by Davidson was not followed by subsequent Archbishops. Lang reverted to St. Mary Le Bow, but from 1943 until the election of Archbishop Carey, the confirmation took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The change in venue in 1943 and 1945 occurred because St. Mary Le Bow was still suffering from war damage. Archbishop Carey reverted to the time- honoured custom but in December 2002 the election of Archbishop Williams was confirmed at St.

  • John Burton, D.D., One of the Founders of the Colony of Georgia
John Burton, D.D., one of the Founders of the Colony of Georgia by H. B. FANT of the U.S. National Archives ITH an area equalling that of England and Wales combined, Georgia W touches the Atlantic seaboard of the United States just north of the Florida peninsula. The basis of this Empire State of the South, to-day the largest state east of the Mississippi river, was laid in 1732 when King George II chartered the Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia in America. These patriots and philanthropists, of whom James Edward Ogle thorpe was a leader, undertook without gain to themselves-their motto was ~ non sibi, sed aliis-to erect a haven for poverty-stricken Englishmen and perse . cuted European protestants. The new province was designed as a buffer ·· · ·.'· between the southernmost existing settlements of Carolina and the ever-present I··· menace of Spanish-occupied Florida.1 The almost forgotten but nevertheless earnest colleagues of Oglethorpe included Dr. John Burton, the scholarly teacher, the persuasive preacher, and the versatile author whose life was linked for all of his maturity with the Univer sity of Oxford. In his career Burton fell just short of real greatness; but even at that-since he was importantly connected with Eton College too-he was, according to Lyte, • by far the most distinguished Fellow of Eton in the middle of the eighteenth century.'2 Burton's cousin, Edward Bentham, Regius Pro fessor of Divinity at Oxford, published in 1771 a biographical sketch in Latin,S of which an English epitome' came out in The Gentleman's Magazine.
