The study aimed to determine the insect diversity based on the cocoa plants at 15 and 20 years of age. Study sites were determined using purpossive random sampling method while insects were collected by net swing method followed by direct morphological observation for species identification. Each site (site 1 and site 2) were patched with 3 plots with an area of 20 x 20 meters. The data collected includes the number of species, individuals, species, and ecological parameters such as Diversity Index (H ') and Equitability Index (E). The results showed that the insect diversity at site 1 (15 years) consisted of 7 orders, 15 families, and 20 species while at site 2 (20 years) consisted of 7 orders, 20 families, and 30 species. The roles of insects in this area were categorized as pests, predators, pollinators, and neutral. The population of insects at site 2 was higher than site 1. The insect diversity index at site 1 (2.350) and site 2 (2,679) were categorized as medium level of biodiversity category. The evenness was the highest in site 2 for 0.912. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the amount of diversity, role, and population of insects at site 2 was higher because it has the carrying capacity and environmental factors suitable for insects growth and development. For close on 18 months he had battled heroically and with characteristic determination against a particularly unpleasant form of cancer, and continued with his writing and research until close to the end. Michael was born on 29 June, 1945, in Hellerup, a suburb of Copenhagen, and began catching moths at the age of nine, particularly in the vicinity of the summer house where they stayed on the north coast of Zealand. By the time he was 11, he wanted to join the Danish Lepidoptera Society but was told he was too young and must wait “a couple of years”. So, exactly two years later he applied again and was accepted – as the youngest-ever Member of the Society. Michael always knew he wanted to be a teacher, and between 1965 and 1970 he attended training college at Hel- lerup Seminarium. Having graduated, he taught Danish, Biology and Special Education at Gentofte School until 1973. In the meantime, he studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Copenhagen from 1970 to 1976, and from 1973 to 1981 he became School Psychologist for elementary schools and high schools in the municipality of Gentofte, work which involved investigation and testing of children with psychiatric problems, counselling, supervi- sion and therapy. He was also an instructor in drug prevention for the Ministry of Education.

Using Illumina technology we have sequenced and assembled a draft genome and transcriptome from Holacanthella duospinosa (Salmon). We have used this annotated assembly to investigate the genetic basis of a range of traits critical to the evolution of the Hexapoda, the phylogenetic position of H. duospinosa and potential horizontal gene transfer events. Results: Our genome assembly was ~375 Mbp in size with a scaffold N50 of ~230 Kbp and sequencing coverage of ~180×. DNA elements, LTRs and simple repeats and LINEs formed the largest components and SINEs were very rare. Phylogenomics (370,877 amino acids) placed H. duospinosa within the Neanuridae. We recovered orthologs of the conserved sex determination genes thought to play a role in sex determination. Analysis of CpG content suggested the absence of DNA methylation, and consistent with this we were unable to detect orthologs of the DNA methyltransferase enzymes. The small subunit rRNA gene contained a possible retrotransposon. The Hox gene complex was broken over two scaffolds.

The Role of Chemicals in the Location of Host Plants by Midge Pests of UK Fruit Crops Helen Sarah Thomas A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Greenwich for the degree of Master of Philosophy February 2015 DECLARATION I certify that this work has not been accepted in substance for any degree, and is not currently submitted for any degree other than that of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) of the University of Greenwich. I also declare that this work is the result of my own investigations except where otherwise stated. Name………………………………………………… (Student) Name………………………………………………….. (First Supervisor) Name……………………………………………………. (Second Supervisor) ii ABSTRACT Gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) are important pests of many horticultural crops. They are difficult to control by conventional means as the larvae develop in galls surrounded by plant tissue. Gravid females need to locate suitable host plant material on which to lay their eggs and there is good evidence that host-produced odour cues are involved. Gall midge pheromones are now available commercially; these attract males to allow monitoring in the field. However there are currently no lures available to attract females. This work aims to develop lures, for up to three gall midge species, which attract gravid females and can be used to monitor females in the field. Three species of gall midges were investigated: the raspberry cane midge, Resseliella theobaldi (Barnes), the blackcurrant leaf midge, Dasineura tetensi (Rübsaamen), and the apple leaf midge, Dasineura mali (Kiefer). Field studies showed gravid raspberry cane midge females are attracted to split canes for oviposition.

If a name is currently out of use in Saskatchewan, it’s current synonym is provided, indented in the line below the accepted name. In this row, we are unable to distinguish between true synonyms and misapplied names used as synonyms. For example, Cryptantha fendleri is an accepted name for a vascular plant that is currently found in Saskatchewan. This name, however, has also been misapplied to both Cryptantha kelseyana and Cryptantha minima in the past. Therefore, it appears as a synonym to those two species.

  • Pasture Arthropod Community Structure
PASTURE ARTHROPOD COMMUNITY STRUCTURE IN AZOREAN ISLANDS OF DIFFERENT GEOLOGICAL AGE A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine by Paulo Alexandre Vieira Borges B.Sc. in Biology (Lisboa, Portugal) June, 1997 Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine Department of Biology Silwood Park ABSTRACT Isolated volcanic oceanic islands, like the Azores, offer unique opportunities to study ecological and biogeographical processes in communities. This study examines the effect of island geological age on arthropod species richness and community structure in recently sown pastures (4 years old) and old semi-natural pastures (more than 35 years old). Three islands of different geological age were studied: Pico at 300,000 years, Terceira at 2 million years and S. Maria at 8.12 million years. In each island, two replicates of each pasture type were selected. Sucking (63 species) and chewing (65 species) arthropod herbivores and predatory (117 species) arthropods were chosen as study groups. The two habitats differ mainly in plant species structure and relative species richness of autochthonous and introduced plant and arthropod taxa. The semi-natural pastures sustain source populations of autochthonous species that colonize sown pastures where sink populations are maintained by continuous immigration. In almost all the analyses performed (e.g., TWINSPAN analysis, Sörensen’s Index of Similarity, Nested ANOVA, herbivore-predator species richness ratio), the island effect was more important than the habitat effect. It seems that local and regional species richness of pasture arthropods increases with geological age in the Azores, as a consequence of both colonization and speciation processes.
