CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Preamble M/s Odin Petroleum Products Private Limited is an unlisted private company. It was incorporated on 27 September, 2019 and is located in West Bengal. It is classified as a private limited company. The main line of business is Manufacture of Coke; Refined Petroleum Products and Nuclear Fuel. The company is registered at JL NO. 113; KALPAINI SHYAMPUR; BANKURA; Bankura; West Bengal; 722208; India. The company is promoted by Sri Sapan Das, Sri Pradeep Newatia, Sri Milan Halder, Sri Chandan Gorai, Sri Santanu Das. Promoters have a good experience in running a prototype unit since 1988 in the name of M/S. Enbee Enterprises by Sri Pradeep Newatia and M/S. KMD ENTERPRISES by Sri Sapan Das. M/s Enbee Enterprises unit was shut down due to operational hazards as it was in Ghusuri area of Howrah, West Bengal, due to space constraints and problem of no entry of vehicles. Due to space constraints further expansion is not possible at the present scenario also new products could not be included despite in house knowhow. Hence it is increasingly felt need of setting up new unit in sophisticated manner on a bigger scale. M/s Odin Petroleum Products Private Limited procured industrial land on lease hold basis near Bankura, West Bengal. The land area is about 2998.68 sq.m. M/s Odin Petroleum Products Private Limited proposes to implement Downstream Petrochemical and Coaltar Distillation Unit at Vill. Shyampur, PO- Jambedia, PS. Barjora, Dist. Bankura, West Bengal. 1.2 Identification of Project Proponent M/s Odin Petroleum Products Private Limited is promoted by Sri Swapan Kumar Das, Sri Pradeep Newatia, Sri Milan Halder, Sri Chandan Gorai, Sri Santanu Das. PROMOTERS Sri Pradeep Kumar Newatia, aged about 62 passed B.Com (Hons.) from Kolkata University in 1973 carrying on business in the name of M/s ENBEE ENTERPRISES, at 27, N.S. Road, Kolkata 700001 since 1988. He was also having a chemical unit manufacturing similar products at Ghusuri, Howrah since 1988 but now shut down last year, due to several problems such as space constraint, pollution problem, No Entry of vehicles issues.     Vidyasagar University Journal of History, Volume III, 2014-20156, Pages: 82-94 ISSN 2321-0834 Sanitation and Health at West Bengal Refugee Camps in the 1950s Swati Sengupta Chatterjee Abstract: East Pakistan refugees arrived at West Bengal in different phases and were grouped into two categories: the ‘old’ arriving during 1946-1958, and the ‘new’ during 1964-1971. The West Bengal Government took the responsibility of rehabilitation of the ‘old’ refugees, but not the ‘new’ ones; eventually it did, but only on the condition that they re-settle outside the state. But even the old refugees staying at the camps of West Bengal received atrocious treatment. This paper focuses on sanitary and health conditions at the old refugee camps in the 1950’s. Although the Government assumed a policy of relief, surprisingly, hardly anything was provided to the refugees staying at the camps. Also, neither proper medical aid nor proper sanitary arrangements were provided to them. Lack of proper sanitary conditions in the camps led to the spread of infectious diseases that took epidemic proportions. This was in sharp contrast to the northern Indian camps where medical aid was provided systematically. Key words: Partition, Health and Sanitation, Refugee Camps, Diseases, Government Policies. The condition of two interrelated aspects of West Bengal camp refugee life in the 1950s – sanitation and health – was deplorable and hardly improved much over time. Undoubtedly, this reflected the approach of the West Bengal Government and its policy towards refugees; indeed, health aid received by the camp refugees of north India in 1948 and those in West Bengal in the 1950s reveal a glaring contrast.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The partition and independence came to India simultaneously. Those who were placed on the wrong side of the border rushed to West Bengal. Actually after the partition, two nations were born: India and Pakistan. There was an exodus from East Pakistan to West Bengal through various phases. After 1950, the journey of Namasudra refugees started. In the 1950s, refugee organizations grew up. Communist Party of India dominated United Central Refugee Council was formed. In 1953, Praja Socialist Party wing of refugee organization Sara Bangla Bastuhara Sanmelan was formed. Most of the Namasudra refugees joined SBBS except Hemanta Biswas. He joined UCRC. Later he was disillusioned with the leaders of UCRC and ultimately joined SBBS. He followed a new policy for the camp refugees- the forcible occupation of land(1959). On the other hand, in 1950, the ex-minister of Pakistan, Jogen Mondal, came to West Bengal. But the refugees did not accept him easily. Ultimately he joined SBBS in 1957-58. Iqbal Sultan Lecturer, Department of Geography, H.M.M College for Women, Dakshineswar, Kolkata-35, India Abstract: Haora city (22037/N and 88020/E) is one of the oldest cities of West Bengal, India. The city has a commercial and administrative importance for a long time. Now it is the second most (after Kolkata) thickly populated city of West Bengal. The city is characterized by widespread human poverty despite increasing employment, child labour and wide socio-economic disparities, a large immigrant population. Due to a large migrant population, refugee and commuters the city has gone through an economic crisis; a crisis in housing, employment, transport, water etc. like any other city of Afro-Asia. Recently, a complex economic and social hierarchy is found which has changed the traditional nature of crime in the city. Now mobile phone snatching, ATM theft, kepmari, Eve teasing, credit card fraud, Nigeria fraud and human trafficking have got predominance than that of earlier crimes such as dacoity, pickpocket, theft etc. According to the report of Howrah City Police number of crime has been increased more than double in last five years. If we intend to find out the cause we have to face bitter experiences. Increasing flow of lower class people from the outer states and rural areas has created the situation more critical. So, the safety of the peace-loving permanent dwellers has become insecure.
