Department of unemployment, economic instability, lacks of urban facilities, unhygienic environmental conditions Geography, Utkal University, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar, etc. People were well aware about the importance of population studies from very beginning. Odisha, India Explosively growing of urban population has attracted the attention of urban geographers and town planners. For country like India, it is very important to study the decadal variation of population growth, it helps in realizing problems. The population growth and socio-economic changes are closely related to each other. In present study North 24 Parana’s has been chosen as study area. The level of urbanization remained high in the district (57.6 % in 2011). Rapid increase in urbanization can be attributed to growth of Kolkata metropolis.Barasat is now within greater Kolkata (Kolkata 124).From 1991 onwards the real estate business in this district thrived and projects were taken which are more of residential type than business type. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the change in urban population growth rate of municipality wise during the three decades 1981-91, 1991- 2001 and 2001-2011. • Serampore: Telos of the Reformation
SERAMPORE: TELOS OF THE REFORMATION by Samuel Everett Masters B.A., Miami Christian College, 1989 A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Religion at Reformed Theological Seminary Charlotte, North Carolina December, 2010 Accepted: ______________________________ Dr. Samuel Larsen, Project Mentor ii ABSTRACT Serampore: the Telos of the Reformation Samuel E. Masters While many biographies of missionary William Carey have been written over the last two centuries, with the exception of John Clark Marshman’s “The Life and Times of Carey, Marshman and Ward: Embracing the History of the Serampore Mission”, published in the mid-nineteenth century, no major work has explored the history of the Serampore Mission founded by Carey and his colleagues. This thesis examines the roots of the Serampore Mission in Reformation theology. Key themes are traced through John Calvin, the Puritans, Jonathan Edwards, and Baptist theologian Andrew Fuller. In later chapters the thesis examines the ways in which these theological themes were worked out in a missiology that was both practical and visionary. The Serampore missionaries’ use of organizational structures and technology is explored, and their priority of preaching the gospel is set against the backdrop of their efforts in education, translation, and social reform. A sense is given of the monumental scale of the work which has scarcely equaled down to this day. iii For Carita: Faithful wife Fellow Pilgrim iv CONTENTS Acknowledgements …………………………..…….………………..……………………...viii Chapter 1. • Sanitation and Health at West Bengal Refugee Camps in the 1950S
Vidyasagar University Journal of History, Volume III, 2014-20156, Pages: 82-94 ISSN 2321-0834 Sanitation and Health at West Bengal Refugee Camps in the 1950s Swati Sengupta Chatterjee Abstract: East Pakistan refugees arrived at West Bengal in different phases and were grouped into two categories: the ‘old’ arriving during 1946-1958, and the ‘new’ during 1964-1971. The West Bengal Government took the responsibility of rehabilitation of the ‘old’ refugees, but not the ‘new’ ones; eventually it did, but only on the condition that they re-settle outside the state. But even the old refugees staying at the camps of West Bengal received atrocious treatment. This paper focuses on sanitary and health conditions at the old refugee camps in the 1950’s. Although the Government assumed a policy of relief, surprisingly, hardly anything was provided to the refugees staying at the camps. Also, neither proper medical aid nor proper sanitary arrangements were provided to them. Lack of proper sanitary conditions in the camps led to the spread of infectious diseases that took epidemic proportions. This was in sharp contrast to the northern Indian camps where medical aid was provided systematically. Key words: Partition, Health and Sanitation, Refugee Camps, Diseases, Government Policies. The condition of two interrelated aspects of West Bengal camp refugee life in the 1950s – sanitation and health – was deplorable and hardly improved much over time. Undoubtedly, this reflected the approach of the West Bengal Government and its policy towards refugees; indeed, health aid received by the camp refugees of north India in 1948 and those in West Bengal in the 1950s reveal a glaring contrast.
