Affirming Ministries are communities of faith, regional councils, educational institutions, outdoor ministries, chaplaincies, and other ministries within the United Church and among its partners that publicly declare their commitment to inclusion and justice for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Although Affirming Ministries make an explicit statement about issues of sexuality and gender, their commitment to justice is far broader. They continually grow and change as they seek to live more fully into God‘s way of welcome, love, and justice for all creation. Just as God rejoices in the goodness and diversity of creation, so too Affirming Ministries honour and celebrate diversity. One justice issue is not seen as more important than another, for in our culture of prejudice and power, injustices are interwoven and often mutually reinforcing. Work for change happens in many ways and in many contexts. Affirming Ministries work in many different ways toward the healing and wholeness of creation—challenging bias and discrimination based on appearance, ability, culture, class, or age; working to end racism; promoting economic justice; increasing accessibility; or caring for the planet. Affirming Ministries seek to go beyond issues of gender identity and sexual orientation to work for justice and inclusion for all people. Affirming Ministries provide information, acceptance, support, and justice-making for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and for people exploring their place on the spectrum of human sexuality. These ministries declare, in words and actions, that God loves and celebrates all people. And they call upon the rest of the church and society to do the same. The growing network of Affirming Ministries within the United Church was initiated in 1992 by Affirm United/S‘affirmer Ensemble,1 an organization that works for the inclusion of people of all gender identities and sexual orientations within the United Church of Canada and society. The United Church of Canada officially endorses the Affirming Ministry Program and encourages its ministries to participate. Through a process of discernment and reflection, Affirming Ministries discover what it means for them to be inclusive and justice-seeking. They prepare a statement of faith and vision that sets out their ongoing commitment to work for justice on issues of gender diversity and sexual orientation within their ministry, the wider church and community, and to support and participate in the Affirming Ministry Program. The Affirming Ministry Program encourages United Church bodies (such as communities of faith, regional councils, outdoor ministries, chaplaincies, education centres, and outreach ministries) to study what it means to be publicly welcoming and inclusive. The program provides information and education

    1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Sarah Louise Richards Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2016 School of Social and Political Sciences The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper This thesis is dedicated to Darius, Benson and Paskalina b Abstract This thesis engages critically with Durkheim¹s ideas of morality in an ethnographic exploration of the reasons young women in Manokwari (West Papua, Indonesia) choose to maintain chastity prior to marriage. Based on 27 months of fieldwork with an urban, Christian, coastal community, I examine their sexual conformity through the motivating force of three emotions – love, fear and hope. Young women wanted to delay their sexual debut so as to not hurt or disappoint their beloved mothers and because they feared being beaten by kin and suffering other forms of violence that sanctioned sexual transgressions. Since pregnancy is understood to lead to school drop-out and forced marriage, hope for a future characterised by secure employment and a harmonious marriage is also a rationale for chastity. These affective logics are explored in the context of cultural constructions of sexual morality at a time of rapid socio-economic change, immoral threats and revitalised enthusiasms for being Christian, and being Papuan. My finding that sentiment structures processes of young women’s moral reasoning and chaste practice supports Durkheim’s contention that ideals – moral standards that are above and beyond individuals – are emotionally based constructs of sacred power. This ethnography thus contributes to recent anthropological discussions that conceptualise morality and ethics as a realm where actors evaluate, select and enact a range of moral options in order to fashion themselves as ethical subjects.

    Governing New Guinea New Guinea Governing An oral history of Papuan administrators, 1950-1990 Governing For the first time, indigenous Papuan administrators share their experiences in governing their country with an inter- national public. They were the brokers of development. After graduating from the School for Indigenous Administrators New Guinea (OSIBA) they served in the Dutch administration until 1962. The period 1962-1969 stands out as turbulent and dangerous, Leontine Visser (Ed) and has in many cases curbed professional careers. The politi- cal and administrative transformations under the Indonesian governance of Irian Jaya/Papua are then recounted, as they remained in active service until retirement in the early 1990s. The book brings together 17 oral histories of the everyday life of Papuan civil servants, including their relationship with superiors and colleagues, the murder of a Dutch administrator, how they translated ‘development’ to the Papuan people, the organisation of the first democratic institutions, and the actual political and economic conditions leading up to the so-called Act of Free Choice. Finally, they share their experiences in the UNTEA and Indonesian government organisation. Leontine Visser is Professor of Development Anthropology at Wageningen University. I attended USF as an undergraduate student of the College of Business and the Honors College from Fall 2006 to Spring 2010. During that time, I became very involved with the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) advocacy movements on campus, including being President of the PRIDE Alliance for a year. When I was told that the Education Abroad department was looking for an Honors Thesis candidate to help find ways to make the department and its programs more LGBT-friendly, it seemed like a natural choice. As I conducted my research, I realized that there are some things that LGBT students need to consider before traveling abroad that other students don’t. Coming out as an LGBT student abroad can be much different than in the U.S.; in extreme cases, the results of not knowing cultural or legal standards can be violence or imprisonment.
