The Familiar Uncommon Spectator: Jack London's Female Watchers In The Game and the Abysmal Brute Scott Emmert In recent decades, Jack London's significant contributions to American literature have gained an increasing amount of critical recognition. Among these acknowledged contributions is his status as the first "serious" writer of sports fiction in America. Biographer James Lundquist, for example, notes that London "was one ofthe first writers to take sports seriously as the raw material for novels and stories" (179), and critic Michael Oriard goes further, identify ing London the "father of American sports fiction" meant for adult readers (Dreaming 9). Specifically, London's accomplishments as a writer ofsports lit erature rest mainly on his boxing fiction. 1 As one biography puts it, "London virtually invented the modern prizefight story" (Labor and Reesman 157 n.7), this invention being represented by the short stories "A Piece ofSteak (1909) and "The Mexican" (1910) and by the short novels The Game (1905) and The Abysmal Brute (1913). Always mindful of his audience and of his sales, how ever, London crafted this inventive prizefight fiction so as not to offend his readers with the brutality ofboxing, a sport so violent and decadent that it was deemed unfit as a subject of serious literature until London "gave it literary respectability" (Oriard, Dreaming 9). When describing what happens inside the square ring, London seeks a measure of respectability for boxing by tempering his descriptions ofviolent action with a compassionate depiction ofhumanity. London's naturalistic box ing fictions, in the way of most naturalist stories, seek to evoke the reader's sympathy for protagonists at the mercy of fo~ces beyond their control. -

He was 40 years old when he died and he wrote a lot. Shelves of Jack London. A friend of mine collects Jack London books and he has got one whole bookshelf practically full of it. I think the man wrote around 52 books in his short life, shortish life. In fact, a survey back in the early ‘90s of world readers, turns out that Jack London was the most popular American writer of them all. More popular than Mark Twain or Ernest Hemingway, or people that you would assume would be the most popular. And there are reasons for it. From the comments I heard in the hall when I came in here, it seemed like most everybody enjoyed these stories. I mean, they’re pretty gruesome and it’s man against nature and man against beast and man against himself, all the typical conflicts that we’re taught about when we learn to write. But it’s done in such a way that it’s very arresting. He was a Californian, born in San Francisco. His father was an itinerant astrologer. Now, you tell me what that is. I guess the guy goes from town to town, telling people’s charts. He left his mother when he found out she was pregnant with London. She married a man named London who legally adopted him, but London was never sure his entire life whether perhaps this man might’ve been his biological father, too. -

“You May Find Yourselves Changed in Unexpected Ways” Literature and Poverty Law Adam Gearey “[I]n these times of dreary crisis, what is the point of emphasising the horror of being?” Julia Kristeva1 Introduction This paper outlines a tradition of Anglo-American literature that stretches from Jane Addams to Jack London and George Orwell. Locating poverty law scholarship in this tradition of poverty writing has important implications for how we understanding lawyering for the poor and, indeed, for the very idea of law and literature.2 Borrowing the idea of unlearning from Jane Addams, we will show how reading literature is central to the moral task of self- definition.3 It may be that poverty lawyering is best understood as peculiar continuation of a tradition of unlearning that defines the problematic of poverty writing.4 The argument concludes with comments on how the main themes of this essay can be framed as a kind of dialectics that pushes unlearning in the direction of a politics of poverty.5 Our argument begins with the encounter between the ‘middle classes’ and the poor that underpinned the settlement house movement in the latter 1800s. The settlement house movement had its origins in the response of churchmen and university scholars to the social and spiritual degradation of slum life wrought by the industrial revolution. Profoundly impressed with the work of the settlement movement, Jane Addams resolved to repeat the social experiment in Chicago. Addams founded Hull House with her partner Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. Addams saw Hull House as “an experimental effort to aid in the solution of the social and industrial problems which are engendered by the modern conditions of life in a great city.”6 Addams appreciated that the spiritual/educational mission of settlement could not be based on settlors imposing their understandings of morality on poor families. -

El objetivo principal de este seminario es ofrecer un panorama general de la evolución de un género vivo y altamente apreciado en la cultura literaria norteamericana. Conceptualizado en buena parte del siglo XIX como tale, tal como se puede ver en la obra de Poe, Hawthorne o Melville, autores que Harry Levin trató de englobar bajo el membrete de The Power of Blackness, por su herencia calvinista, su filiación gótica y la exploración del mal. Hacia fines de siglo se le comienza a denominar short story y esta forma se ramifica en múltiples direcciones. Así tenemos los breves relatos de Kate Chopin quien traduce y asimila a Maupassant; los experimentos de Ambrose Bierce sobre la conciencia y la elasticidad del tiempo; y el impresionismo verbal y casi plástico de un Stephen Crane. JACK LONDON, THE SAILOR The water around him beckoned Jack London at an early age. Growing up, mostly in Oakland, California, Jack London always had San Francisco Bay close by. This provided him the opportunity to experience adventures on the bay that inevitably led to adventures in far off waters. The main source for Jack London’s early experiences in sailing is found in his writing. The book John Barleycorn is the main source. Here he mentions sailing a skiff on the bay at age fourteen. The skiff was a large rowboat with a centerboard and a small sail. In San Francisco Bay the young London observed ships from foreign countries which triggered a yearning to experience the adventures he envisioned were to be found in other parts of the world. THE RAZZLE DAZZLE Jack London’s next sailing adventures were on the Razzle Dazzle, a sloop for which he paid oyster pirate, French Frank, three hundred dollars that he had borrowed from his wet nurse, Virginia Prentiss. With his own vessel, London now felt tremendously free and wasted no time in raiding the oyster beds with his one-man crew, Spider Healy. The oyster beds were on government land that had been taken over by the Southern Pacific Railroad and leased to oyster growers. London sailed the Razzle Dazzle until the mainsail burned, then he teamed up with young Scratch Nelson on his boat and continued as an oyster pirate. Eventually, London realized it was only a matter of time before he would be either caught or killed, so he agreed to become a deputy for the Fish Patrol operating out of Benicia. -

‘Such was the law of The Road’1 and Such were the Rules of The Text: Autobiographical Explorations of Hobo Subculture Joanne Hall Red Rocks Community College Lakewood, Colorado Perhaps the greatest charm of tramp-life is the absence of monotony. In Hobo Land the face of life is protean – an ever-changing phantasmagoria, where the impossible happens and the unexpected jumps out of the bushes at every turn of the road. The hobo never knows what is going to happen the next moment; hence, he lives only in the present moment. – Jack London, The Road (p. 37). Jack London’s assessment of tramp-life suggests its movement, fluidity, dynamic nature and present-orientated temporal dimension. These sentiments, however, are but a whimsical side step, for the rest of The Road centralises the image of a masculine subculture with a complicated set of rules and ranks. Thus, the suggestion of fluidity clashes with the ‘laws’ that frame hobo experience, as represented by London’s text. Indeed, texts defining themselves as hobo autobiography demonstrate a number of structural similarities, suggesting that ideas of the romance or freedom of the road are, in fact, subservient to the repetitive, formulaic, mythic pattern of the subgenre. Yet, it is imperative to observe that while these texts are labelled as autobiography, charges of exaggeration and verbose storytelling could be levied against each of them. Indeed, their incorporation of tall tales dares the reader to question authenticity. However, instead of invalidating the claim to autobiography, this provides a springboard into multileveled issues of performance, creativity, artistry and authorship, succinctly linking with the myriad inter-textual references employed by the authors.
