Apocalyptic thinking is, typically, a religious response to secular threats to the faith community prophesising, or attendant on, ‘the End’; these millenarian outlooks provide communities in crisis a promise of confirmation of the object of their faith, the vanquishing of enemies, and, crucially, continuity for the community in a better world to come. In the latter half of the twentieth century and the early years of the twenty-first, apocalypticism and conspiracy theory have tended to coincide. The tendency toward a binary distinction between terms of absolute good and absolute evil and the revelation of secrets relating to human destiny through prophesy or ‘truth-seeking’ provide a broad transposability between the two interpretative strategies. An increasing amalgamation of political paranoia and eschatology have given rise to what has been termed ‘conspirituality’. -

Totalitarianism and Gnosticism: Gnosticism As the Essence of Modernity
On Eric Voegelin’s (1901-1985) Totalitarianism and Gnosticism: Gnosticism as the Essence of Modernity Adelaide de Faria Pimenta, Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil The European Conference on Ethics, Religion & Philosophy 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This paper is part of a master’s thesis in progress. The chosen theme arises from the need to understand the relation that the political philosopher makes between totalitarianism and ideologies, Gnosticism and modernity. For this research, two basic concepts proposed by his philosophical-political theory will be used as fundamental theoretical base: political religions and Gnosticism. Voegelin used the concept of political religions as one of the initial elements of his analysis of twentieth-century political movements - notably National Socialism in Germany and Stalinist socialism. With extensive work and career as a scholar, he took on the task of investigating the deep origins of the political ideologies of his time. His project was being outlined through criticism of the ideologies of his time and research for spiritual causes of it. He investigated the symbolism in history in order to recover the formative experiences that gave rise to them, introducing the idea of Gnosticism as the essence of modernity. The author's claim that modern ideological movements reflect a tendency to immanentize Christian eschatology instigates a broader understanding of the phenomenon. This topic is extremely current and pertinent to the Religious Studies, a field that allows the investigation of religion and its interfaces with historical, political, philosophical and psychological bias, among others, possibly opening perspectives to understanding totalitarianism and its repercussion in the contemporary world. -

A special attention will be paid to the idea of the im- manentization of the eschaton which remains in the center of his argument. In the second part of the paper, I will analyze two Hollywood films in the light of Voegelin’s thesis: Dark City (1998) and Pleasantville (1998). Firstly, I will argue that the main char- acters depicted in the films can be classified as Gnostics in Voegelin’s sense. Secondly, I will demonstrate that their revolutionary acts reflect the idea of the immanentization of the eschaton. The Politics of Individualism 1 In 1930, invited to contribute to an anthology collecting personal statements of contemporary American philosophers, John Dewey chose to entitle his brief autobiographical essay “From Absolutism to Experimentalism” (LW 5: 147ff.). He thereby alluded to a fundamental shift in his intellectual self-understanding, which had departed from a Hegelian-style idealism and had led via William James to the formation of the corner stones of 20th-century pragmatism. What Dewey calls “absolutism” in his essay, stands for the anachronistic idea of an intellectual orientation to life that claims to found life-worldly experience on the insights of a self-sufficient rationality. -

Visions of the End in Interwar British Art Thomas Bromwell PhD University of York History of Art September 2019 Abstract The cessation of hostilities to the Great War with the signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 brought the largest and most devastating war hitherto known to an end. It was meant to be the “War to End War”, yet a little over twenty years later in 1939 it was eclipsed by the devastation of the Second World War. The shadow of war loomed over the intervening years, which were marked by pronounced speculation on where human society was going; for every prophet of doom anticipating collapse into degradation, animosity, and self-annihilation there was a contrasting viewpoint awaiting the move towards a better new world. Further, these assessments often overlapped. This thesis examines the impact of apocalyptic ideas within British art in the interwar years. It looks at painting, drawings, prints, and sculpture, addressing the use and development of apocalyptic concepts during the period 1918-1939, and explicitly relates contemporary anxieties and apocalyptic evocations with Christian apocalyptic narratives. Interwar British society at large identified with Christian traditions, either as products of a Christian education and state, or through belief. The Apocalypse is central to Christian hope. The project surveys this underappreciated aspect of the period in order to recognize the influence of Judeo-Christian apocalyptic traditions. The apocalyptic orientation, both in its religious and secular forms, has been recognised as a manifestation arising from anxiety in the contemporary context. This thesis reveals a British permutation of a general (European) trend. -

ABSTRACT Faith Seeking Understanding: The Relationship between Noetic and Pneumatic Differentiation in Eric Voegelin's Political Philosophy Jeremiah H. Russell Mentor: Barry G. Hankins, Ph.D. This thesis is a study of the philosophy of Eric Voegelin with particular focus on the relationship between noetic differentiation (particularly Greek philosophy) and pneumatic differentiation (particularly Christianity). The thesis begins with an examination of the recovery of transcendence in politics through his noetic theory of consciousness and noetic theory of history. It then turns to consider Voegelin’s reading of Christianity, which makes a nuanced distinction between the superior Christian differentiation and its subsequent derailed expression. The thesis proposes that, for a variety of reasons, Voegelin gave primacy to Greek philosophy over Christianity in order to restore political order through a “noetically-controlled Christianity.” Copyright © 2006 Jeremiah H.
