London: Routledge............................................................................................................. 140 Abstract The following critical appraisal presents eight interlinked works that apply and extend Michael Barkun’s (2003) concept of ‘improvisational millennialism’. This body of work demonstrates that, as Barkun suggests, the concept is widely applicable to the online communities in which stigmatized knowledge is widely accepted. Moreover, it extends the definition to consider how improvisational millennialism provides ill-defined or dispossessed communities a means of articulating a collective relationship to historical time as well as a crude means of shoring up basic assumptions of group membership. Mythical pasts and millennial expectation provide the opportunity for shared eschatological orientation whilst the dualism of conspiracy theories demarcates between the communities and their outsiders. This critical review demonstrates how the journal articles and book chapters collected in the appendices provide specific examples of the application and extension of improvisational millennialism. The examples chosen are varied but a persistent theme drawn out through analysis is the role that national cultures – official and official – are articulated through improvisational millennialism. The examples include consideration of how the depiction of millennial beliefs in the mass media contribute to national cultural constructs but more typically focus on the use of improvisational millennialism in online communities. Of the latter, the greater number of examples are concerned with improvisational millennialism within the neo-fascist milieu. Mobilised by conspiracy theories with apocalyptic subtexts, the far right reliance on improvisational millennialism demonstrates the implicit danger of the increased incursion of stigmatized knowledge into the cultural mainstream. This critical review serves to show that despite being typified by a syncretic bricolage of unconnected ideas and traditions, improvisational millennialism is reflective of both social and political realities. i Acknowledgements There are many people who have helped my work to develop and given the timespan in which these works have been published the institutional support received in the University of Derby has been extensive. I am eternally grateful for their love and support. ii Introduction This thesis will make the case, through this critical review and the published works submitted, that conspiracy theories and millennial beliefs are expressions of collective hopes and fears. This has been well established in the case of millennialism but the thesis will draw on the works of Michael Barkun to demonstrate that conspiracy theories are a related phenomenon and are similarly expressive of communities’ outlooks. Further, whilst these may take benign forms there are contained within them the potential for fuelling divisive and extreme views of society; in conspiracy theories’ division between ‘them’ (the conspirators) and ‘us’ (the conspired against) and in millennialism’s identification of ‘the chosen people’ and the ‘remnant’ (those outside the chosen community). The following critical review therefore presents the case for considering current conspiracy theories and millennialist narratives as reflections of developments in contemporary social and political discourse. Lilli Nye May 23, 2004 A few weeks ago I stumbled across a news flash that the final installment of the “Left Behind” novel series was about to be published and had already sold 2 million copies prior to its release date. For those of you unfamiliar with the “Left Behind” phenomenon, it’s a techno-thriller series based upon the New Testament book of Revelation. The series outlines in vivid detail a particular Christian view of the end times (one that is not shared by many Christians, by the way). The books take the fantastic, mythological imagery in the book of Revelation and translate it into concrete terms and imagery from our time, with heavy doses of technology, conspiracy theory, and right-leaning politics. Just to give a sense of the gist of the series: The 12-book series kicks off with the Rapture, in which true believers in Jesus disappear into thin air because they have been, in a sense, supernaturally airlifted from earth in anticipation of the great Tribulation to come. Those left behind (hence the name of the series) must face seven years of global chaos before Jesus returns for the cosmic battle of Armageddon, the final battle between good and evil, and the final judgment of all souls. In the seven years of tribulation that the books cover, the world is ravaged by war, disaster, and plague, and is tyrannized by the rising Antichrist, who dominates the world from the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

    CORNISHNESS AND ENGLISHNESS: NESTED IDENTITIES OR INCOMPATIBLE IDEOLOGIES? Bernard Deacon (International Journal of Regional and Local History 5.2 (2009), pp.9-29) In 2007 I suggested in the pages of this journal that the history of English regional identities may prove to be ‘in practice elusive and insubstantial’.1 Not long after those words were written a history of the north east of England was published by its Centre for Regional History. Pursuing the question of whether the north east was a coherent and self-conscious region over the longue durée, the editors found a ‘very fragile history of an incoherent and barely self-conscious region’ with a sense of regional identity that only really appeared in the second half of the twentieth century.2 If the north east, widely regarded as the most coherent English region, lacks a historical identity then it is likely to be even more illusory in other regions. Although rigorously testing the past existence of a regional discourse and finding it wanting, Green and Pollard’s book also reminds us that history is not just about scientific accounts of the past. They recognise that history itself is ‘an important element in the construction of the region … Memory of the past is deployed, selectively and creatively, as one means of imagining it … We choose the history we want, to show the kind of region we want to be’.3 In the north east that choice has seemingly crystallised around a narrative of industrialization focused on the coalfield and the gradual imposition of a Tyneside hegemony over the centuries following 1650.

    Colin McAllister Regnum Caelorum Terrestre: The Apocalyptic Vision of Lactantius May 2016 Abstract: The writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius have been extensively studied by historians, classicists, philosophers and theologians. But his unique apocalyptic eschatology expounded in book VII of the Divinae Institutiones, his largest work, has been relatively neglected. This paper will distill Lactantius’s complex narrative and summarize his sources. In particular, I investigate his chiliasm and the nature of the intermediate state, as well as his portrayal of the Antichrist. I argue that his apocalypticism is not an indiscriminate synthesis of varying sources - as it often stated - but is essentially based on the Book of Revelation and other Patristic sources. +++++ The eminent expert on all things apocalyptic, Bernard McGinn, wrote: Even the students and admirers of Lactantius have not bestowed undue praise upon him. To Rene Pichon [who wrote in 1901 what is perhaps still the seminal work on Lactantius’ thought] ‘Lactantius is mediocre in the Latin sense of the word - and also a bit in the French sense’; to Vincenzo Loi [who studied Lactantius’ use of the Bible] ‘Lactantius is neither a philosophical or theological genius nor linguistic genius.’ Despite these uneven appraisals, the writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

    ICCT Policy Brief October 2019 DOI: 10.19165/2019.2.06 ISSN: 2468-0486 A Schema of Right-Wing Extremism in the United States Author: Sam Jackson Over the past two years, and in the wake of deadly attacks in Charlottesville and Pittsburgh, attention paid to right-wing extremism in the United States has grown. Most of this attention focuses on racist extremism, overlooking other forms of right-wing extremism. This article presents a schema of three main forms of right-wing extremism in the United States in order to more clearly understand the landscape: racist extremism, nativist extremism, and anti-government extremism. Additionally, it describes the two primary subcategories of anti-government extremism: the patriot/militia movement and sovereign citizens. Finally, it discusses whether this schema can be applied to right-wing extremism in non-U.S. contexts.     The Problem of Conspiracism Matthew R. X. Dentith University of Bucharest Abstract Belief in conspiracy theories is typically considered irrational, and as a conse- quence of this, conspiracy theorists––those who dare believe some conspiracy theory––have been charged with a variety of epistemic or psychological failings. Yet recent philosophical work has challenged the view that belief in conspiracy theories should be considered as typically irrational. By performing an intra-group analysis of those people we call “conspiracy theorists”, we find that the problem- atic traits commonly ascribed to the general group of conspiracy theorists turn out to be merely a set of stereotypical behaviours and thought patterns associated with a purported subset of that group. If we understand that the supposed prob- lem of belief in conspiracy theories is centred on the beliefs of this purported sub- set––the conspiracists––then we can reconcile the recent philosophical contribu- tions to the wider academic debate on the rationality of belief in conspiracy theo- ries. How- ever, carbon footprints are not the focus for this year’s Anvil. Instead we have decid- ed to look at “footprints” in a broader sense. The High Weald is a landscape that has been shaped by man – and creatures – over generations, so we have delved into the area’s history to explore some of the last- ing “footprints” made by previous generations. Some we value and are thankful for, while others are more of a conundrum. Dinosaurs were the first to tramp the sandstones which form the underlying geology of the area – and their footprints can still be seen where the rock has been exposed. Later, the Anglo-Saxons left perhaps the most significant footprint on the landscape – the small, irregu- lar-shaped fields, scattered settlements and drove routes.
