Graduated students told me that I would love and hate my thesis at the same time. I found out they were right. Having written many papers and essays over the course of my study, as well as a bachelor thesis, I considered myself well prepared and ready to take on a project that would be my master thesis. But nothing could prepare me for a project that took me more than 1.5 year to finish and of which the result would cover almost 150 pages. Choosing a subject with which I was relatively familiar, conspiracy theories on the Internet, I soon found out that there is a significant difference between reading about conspiracy theories on discussion forums for entertainment, and studying this phenomenon with academic tools. Despite the ever-growing literature on online research methods, its approaches are as diffuse as the Internet itself. Despite the ever-growing academic interest in conspiracy theories, comprehensive studies to this phenomenon are still limited with regard to their material as well as their interpretations. And on top of these limitations, the topic I became most interested in, namely the spiritual side of conspiracy theories, has hardly been researched in an academic setting. On many levels, this academic undertaking felt like a pioneer study. I had to familiarize myself with the methods, modes of analysis, and previous research on the subject, while at the same time employing these academic approaches to the field under scrutiny. Because of the versatility of the subject I have chosen I was forced to elaborate on the academic discussions in various fields of research. Where possible, I limited myself to the basic consensus on the topic. When consensus is not yet established these topics required a more elaborated discussion, such as the approaches to conspiracy theories and the concept of esotericism. Besides the need for a discussion of the literature, in order to answer my research question it was also necessary to provide lengthy quotes from the discussion forum as

Kovach ii Abstract This thesis explains some of the social and cultural dynamics behind dooms day prophecies, and why some people believe that other humans can accurately predict the end of the world. Throughout recent history, groups such as the Millerites (early 20th century) and the New Age Mayanists (late 20th century) claimed to know when the end of days would occur, and each provided reasons for believing in the apocalypse. For example, the Millerites believed that in order to get into heaven, a person must surrender his/her earthly possessions and live in poverty. As a result of their servitude and Godliness, God would spare them from hell on earth and they would be accepted into Heaven. According to the New Age Mayanists, the earth goes through cycles based on the ancient Mayan calendar and at present, it is completing one of these cycles, bringing with it the end of our current world. I explain why the social and cultural beliefs that sustain these and other doomsday movements continue to be popular and gain followers. People need to feel wanted, such as they are a part of a movement. Although dooms day has not happened, people continue to congregate and donate their money and resources to groups that promise nothing other than salvation from the apocalyptic end of our planet.

Since the 1990s, the ‘child soldier crisis’ has become a major humanitarian and human rights project. The figure of the child soldier has often been taken as evidence of the ‘barbarism’, dehumanization and trauma generated by modern warfare, but such images can obscure the complex reality of children’s experiences of being part of armed groups during conflict. This article uses the published memoirs of former child soldiers from Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda, Eritrea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to explore the instrumental and discursive nexus between child soldiers, memory, violence and humanitarianism. It assesses how (former-) children combatants remember and recount their experiences of war, and how these narratives can be shaped by humanitarian, literary and/or therapeutic framings. The article argues that these memoirs’ significance lies in their affective truths and what they reveal about children’s experience, and narrations, of war.

    Allison Schifani, David Lyttle Magick, Capital, Identity Embodied Ritual and Technologies of the Resistant Self 14 Allison Magick, Capital, Schifani Identity— and Embodied Ritual David and Technologies Lyttle of the Resistant Self “Magick is a culture.”1 So writes Alan Chapman in his Advanced Magick for Beginners. What follows is an effort to take such a claim seriously, and to imagine what the political affordances of magick might be, and what kinds of things those magicians already among us might be doing. The contemporary practice of magick (of the Western esoteric tradition) may be, we will argue, a creative technology of the self. It can work to counter the mandates of the reigning biopolitical regime, of capital’s investment in identity and identity politics, even as some of magick’s instantiations mirror certain instrumental tendencies of capital. The embodied practices of Western magick may be able to not only literally and creatively remake the self (in practice and concept) in ways that could prove liberatory, but also serve as a useful epistemological framework to read the mechanisms of capitalist productions of identity. We, along with many practicing magicians, want to resuscitate the affordances of positive destruction and of creative, ethical refusal. Magick lends itself to such a project. Magickal practices can seek to imagine and create new forms (social, political, technological, epistemological) of organizing the world. There are a number of reasons, in any critique of capitalist productions of identity and the self, to look to magick.     The 2012 phenomenon in South-West France OPEN ACCESS Véronique Campion-Vincent Abstract: The 2012 phenomenon is discussed, especially its development in The Two Rennes and Bugarach Area in South-West France. First the ideas and beliefs of the “alternative seekers” and the growth of an ex- pectation of spiritual renewal on 21st December 2012 are presented; together with the transformation of this expectation into the prediction of a total disaster and especially the treatment of this predic- tion as an “entertaining” subject in the mainstream. Later the cluster of myths and beliefs that has grown since the 1950s around Rennes-le-Château and inspired the Da Vinci Code (2003) is discussed, together with the growth of personal development workshops linked to the sacralized Pic of Buga- rach nearby, that have brought an exceptional concentration of alternative seekers in this area. Fi- nally, the article presents the situation’s evolution in the last days of 2012 in Bugarach, marked by the mobilization of the authorities, a massive presence of the media and the almost total absence of the expected “visionaries”. Prospective remarks will be presented to conclude. The author has chosen the expression “alternative seekers”, instead of “alterna- tive spiritualists” used by other commentators, to avoid confusion with the more re- stricted spiritualist movement linked to the Fox sisters’ experiments in spirit com- munication in March 1848, a movement “which derived its essential impulses from Swedenborg and Mesmer” (Hanegraaff 1998 [1996]: 435).
