Perhaps this is why his soaring lyricism, rhythmic complexity, and harmonic language appealed to early–and mid–20th- century luminaries such as Fritz Reiner, Arturo Toscanini, Vladimir Horowitz, and Dimitri Mitropoulos. He achieved success early in his career, writing his first opera at age 10, and, at 14, entering Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, where he excelled in composition, piano, and voice.
