Thursday 6 pm Auction—Plants, Items & Donors Auctioneer—Mark Dudgeon Plant Expert—Mark Miller GC-1 $50 gift certificate Generous Donor — Ohio Mulch and T-1 Berberis japonica ‘Concorde — Purple leaf Japanese barberry A miniature, rounded, deciduous shrub with dramatic deep maroon, purple foliage that becomes more intense in fall. It produces small yellow flowers in late spring followed by bright red berries. It typically grows 2 ’x 3’. Prefers well-drained, rich, moist, fertile soil. Deer resistant. Zones 4–8; Generous Donor — Scarff’s Nursery, Inc. T-2 Aesculus pavia — Red buckeye A deciduous, small tree growing to 10–20’. At the tips of branches, 4–10” panicles of red to orange-red, flowers appear in spring. Shiny, dark green, palmately compound leaves begin to decline by August. Fall foliage color is not special. Smooth, round (1–2” across), light brown, seed capsules contain 1–3 shiny seeds called buckeyes. They ripen in the fall. Average, medium-moist, well-drained soil. Zones 4–8; Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc. T-3 Acer campestre ‘Carnival’ — Carnival hedge maple Carnival is a small, deciduous tree, usually multi-stemmed, becoming only 10’ tall and wide. Its foliage is pink and white variegated in spring becoming only white variegated as it matures. Good fall color is lacking. It grows well in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. Zones 5–8; Generous Donor — The Siebenthaler Company, Inc. T-4 Eleutherococcus sieboldianus 'Variegatus' — Varigated fiveleaf aralia T-5 Adaptable deciduous shrub growing 6–8’ tall and wide with variegated leaves, bright green with white edges. Small sharp thorns grow on stems below each leaf. Tolerant of drought, poor soils and shearing. Formerly in the genus Acanthopanax. Zones 4–8; Generous Donor — Scioto Gardens Nursery T-6 Betula nigra — River birch Fast growing, medium-sized native, deciduous tree. Mature height, 40–70’. Best in moist, acidic, fertile soil including semi-aquatic conditions, but also tolerates drier soil. Adapts well to acidic, heavy clay soil. Salmon-pink to reddish brown bark exfoliates revealing lighter inner bark. Leaves turn a clear yellow in fall. Zones 5–9; Generous Donor — Decker’s Nursery T-7 Cercis canadensis ‘Vanilla Twist’ PP# 22744 — Vanilla Twist redbud White flowers and weeping habit are distinguishing characteristics of this redbud cultivar. It can grow to 12’ x 8’ in average to dry soil. Zones 5–9; Generous Donor — Tree Tyme Nursery T-8 Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Scarlet Storm’ PP# 20951 — Double take Scarlet™ flowering quince This cultivar of flowering quince produces early spring, scarlet-red, double blooms, often opening before foliage emerges. It is a deciduous, thornless shrub growing 3–4’ tall and wide. Plants do not produce fruit. Average, medium-moist, well-drained soil. Zones 5–9; Generous Donor — Zupcsan’s Nursery T-9 Buxus sempervirens ‘Variegata’ — Variegated boxwood T-10 This cultivar of evergreen, common boxwood is denser, more mounded, and slower-growing (3” per T-11 year) than the species. Its leaves are bright green with white margins that turn cream colored and mature light yellow. Best in evenly moist, well-drained soil. Zones 6–8; Generous Donor — Scioto Gardens Nursery = full sun = partial shade = full shade 1 Thursday 6 pm Auction—Plants, Items & Donors Auctioneer—Mark Dudgeon Plant Expert—Mark Miller T-12 Cornus mas 'Flava' — Flava cornelian cherry dogwood A deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows 15–25' x 12–20'. Clusters of tiny, yellow flowers open along stems before leaves emerge creating a yellow mist over the plant. Dark green leaves (to 4" long) have no significant fall color. Fruits are, fleshy, berries, which mature yellow, unlike red of the species, in mid-summer and attract wildlife. Average, medium-moist, well-drained soil. Zones 4–8; Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc. T-13 Chamaecyparis pisifera ’Vintage Gold’ — Vintage Gold Sawara cypress A dwarf, evergreen conifer with a mounding growth habit and golden, feathery foliage. Vintage Gold can grow to 5–7’ x 3–5’. Requires well-drained soil. Zones 5–8; Generous Donor — Scioto Gardens Nursery T-14 Corylopsis glabrescens — Fragrant winter hazel A spreading, multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows 8–10' tall and wide. Drooping clusters of fragrant pale-yellow flowers open in late winter to early spring before the foliage emerges. Dark green leaves (to 4" long) turn shades of yellow in fall. Best in acidic, organically rich, medium-moist, well-drained soil. Zones 5–8. Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc. GC-2 $75 gift certificate Generous Donor — Kurtz Bothers, Inc. and T-15 Deutzia x rosea ‘Nikko Blush’ — Nikko Blush slender deutzia 'Nikko Blush' slender deutzia has arching, low-growing branches and grows to 3’ x 4’. Its bright pink buds open in April and May showing abundant soft pink flowers. It makes an excellent groundcover. Leaves are shades of burgundy in autumn. Zones 5–8; Generous Donor — Klyn Nurseries, Inc. T-16 Franklinia alatamaha — Franklin Tree This native, deciduous tree has been extinct in the wild since the early 1800s. It is the only species in the genus Franklinia. It may be single or multi-stemmed and grows 10–25’ tall. Fragrant, 3”, white flowers with abundant yellow stamens bloom in late summer for several weeks. Flowers often are present when the foliage turns orange-red. Seed capsules mature in 13–15 months. Best in evenly moist, well-drained, acidic, organically rich, soil. Requires watering during dry periods. Zones 5–8; Generous Donor — The Siebenthaler Company, Inc. T-17 Deutzia ‘NCDX2’ (PPAF) — Yuki Cherry Blossom deutzia A small, deciduous shrub with a neat, mounded habit growing 12–24’ tall and wide. In spring, pink, bell- like flowers cover the plant. Fall foliage is burgundy-purple. It is a tough, adaptable plant and makes an excellent groundcover, especially on a sunny slope. Deer resistant. Zones 5–8; Generous Donor — Premier Plant Solutions T-18 Hamamelis x ‘Amethyst’ — Amethyst witch hazel A deciduous, rounded shrub growing 8–10’ tall and wide. This witch hazel’s reddish-purple blooms are mildly fragrant and open mid-winter. Foliage is gray-green and becomes brilliant red and orange in the fall. Best in average, moist, well-drained soil. Zones 5–8; Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc. T-19 Hydrangea paniculata ‘Ilvodo’ BOBO — Bobo panicle hydrangea This is a compact, panicle hydrangea growing as an upright mound 2–3’ x 3–4’. It is noted for early blooming. On the tips of strong stems are conical clusters, to 11” long, of white flowers. As flowers age, they have pink to lavender tones. Best in fertile, medium moist, well-drained soil. Zones 3–8; Generous Donor — C. M. It grows 3–4’ tall and wide. Leaves emerge a deep burgundy and become vivid red in autumn. Yellow flowers open in early summer and attract pollinators. Adaptable to most soils and tolerant of dry shady locations. Zones 4–7; Generous Donor — Decker’s Nursery T-21 Diervilla sp. ‘Kodiak’® Orange — Orange bush honeysuckle This native, deciduous shrub is a good substitute for burning bush. It grows 3–4’ tall and wide. Green foliage becomes glowing orange in autumn. Yellow flowers open in early summer and attract pollinators. Adaptable to most soils and tolerant of dry shady locations. Zones 4–7; Generous Donor — Decker’s Nursery T-22 Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon Variegata' — Worplesdon Variegata sweetgum A smaller version of the species and more pyramidal in form. It can become 40’ x 25’ at maturity. It is a deciduous tree with star-shaped, dark green leaves that become red, purple or yellow in the fall. Round, prickly, hard fruits can be a problem so plant where this will not be an issue. For optimum growth, plant in rich, evenly moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Zones 5–9; Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc. T-23 Euonymus alata ‘Devil’s Fire’ — Devil’s Fire burning bush A deciduous shrub growing to 5–15’ tall and wide. This cultivar has tighter branching, superior stem hardiness, and more extreme red fall color than the species. Adaptable to a variety of soil types but does not tolerate wet soil.
