GC-1 $50 gift certificate Generous Donor — Ohio Mulch and T-1 Berberis japonica ‘Concorde — Purple Japanese barberry A miniature, rounded, shrub with dramatic deep maroon, purple foliage that becomes more intense in fall. It produces small yellow in late spring followed by bright red berries. It typically grows 2 ’x 3’. Prefers well-drained, rich, moist, fertile soil. Deer resistant. T-2 Aesculus pavia — Red buckeye A deciduous, small tree growing to 10–20’. At the tips of branches, 4–10” panicles of red to orange-red, flowers appear in spring. Shiny, dark green, palmately compound begin to decline by August. Fall foliage color is not special. Smooth, round (1–2” across), light brown, seed capsules contain 1–3 shiny seeds called buckeyes. T-3 Acer campestre ‘Carnival’ — Carnival hedge maple Carnival is a small, deciduous tree, usually multi-stemmed, becoming only 10’ tall and wide. Its foliage is pink and white variegated in spring becoming only white variegated as it matures. Good fall color is lacking. It grows well in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. T-4 Eleutherococcus sieboldianus 'Variegatus' — Varigated fiveleaf aralia T-5 Adaptable deciduous shrub growing 6–8’ tall and wide with variegated leaves, bright green with white edges. Small sharp thorns grow on stems below each leaf. Tolerant of drought, poor soils and shearing. Formerly in the Acanthopanax. Zones 4–8;   Generous Donor — Scioto Gardens Nursery

T-6 Betula nigra — River birch Fast growing, medium-sized native, deciduous tree. Mature height, 40–70’. Best in moist, acidic, fertile soil including semi-aquatic conditions, but also tolerates drier soil. Adapts well to acidic, heavy clay soil. Salmon-pink to reddish brown bark exfoliates revealing lighter inner bark. Leaves turn a clear yellow in fall. Zones 5–9;   Generous Donor — Decker’s Nursery

T-7 Cercis canadensis ‘Vanilla Twist’ PP# 22744 — Vanilla Twist redbud White flowers and weeping habit are distinguishing characteristics of this redbud cultivar. It can grow to 12’ x 8’ in average to dry soil. Zones 5–9;   Generous Donor — Tree Tyme Nursery

T-8 Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Scarlet Storm’ PP# 20951 — Double take Scarlet™ flowering quince This cultivar of flowering quince produces early spring, scarlet-red, double blooms, often opening before foliage emerges. T-9 Buxus sempervirens ‘Variegata’ — Variegated boxwood T-10 This cultivar of evergreen, common boxwood is denser, more mounded, and slower-growing (3” per T-11 year) than the species. Its leaves are bright green with white margins that turn cream colored and mature light yellow. Best in evenly moist, well-drained soil. Zones 6–8;   Generous Donor — Scioto Gardens Nursery

T-12 mas 'Flava' — Flava cornelian cherry dogwood A deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows 15–25' x 12–20'. Clusters of tiny, yellow flowers open along stems before leaves emerge creating a yellow mist over the plant. Dark green leaves (to 4" long) have no significant fall color. Fruits are, fleshy, berries, which mature yellow, unlike red of the species, in mid-summer and attract wildlife. Average, medium-moist, well-drained soil. T-13 Chamaecyparis pisifera ’Vintage Gold’ — Vintage Gold Sawara cypress A dwarf, evergreen conifer with a mounding growth habit and golden, feathery foliage. Vintage Gold can grow to 5–7’ x 3–5’. Requires well-drained soil. Zones 5–8;   Generous Donor — Scioto Gardens Nursery

T-14 Corylopsis glabrescens — Fragrant winter hazel A spreading, multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows 8–10' tall and wide. Drooping clusters of fragrant pale-yellow flowers open in late winter to early spring before the foliage emerges. Dark green leaves (to 4" long) turn shades of yellow in fall. Its bright pink buds open in April and May showing abundant soft pink flowers. It makes an excellent groundcover. Leaves are shades of burgundy in autumn. T-16 Franklinia alatamaha — Franklin Tree This native, deciduous tree has been extinct in the wild since the early 1800s. It is the only species in the genus Franklinia. It may be single or multi-stemmed and grows 10–25’ tall. Fragrant, 3”, white flowers with abundant yellow stamens bloom in late summer for several weeks. Flowers often are present when the foliage turns orange-red. Seed capsules mature in 13–15 months. Best in evenly moist, well-drained, acidic, organically rich, soil. T-17 Deutzia ‘NCDX2’ (PPAF) — Yuki Cherry Blossom deutzia A small, deciduous shrub with a neat, mounded habit growing 12–24’ tall and wide. In spring, pink, bell- like flowers cover the plant. Fall foliage is burgundy-purple. It is a tough, adaptable plant and makes an excellent groundcover, especially on a sunny slope. Deer resistant. T-18 Hamamelis x ‘Amethyst’ — Amethyst witch hazel A deciduous, rounded shrub growing 8–10’ tall and wide. This witch hazel’s reddish-purple blooms are mildly fragrant and open mid-winter. T-19 Hydrangea paniculata ‘Ilvodo’ BOBO — Bobo panicle hydrangea This is a compact, panicle hydrangea growing as an upright mound 2–3’ x 3–4’. It is noted for early blooming. On the tips of strong stems are conical clusters, to 11” long, of white flowers. As flowers age, they have pink to lavender tones. Best in fertile, medium moist, well-drained soil. T-20 Diervilla sp. ‘Kodiak’® Red — Red bush honeysuckle This native, deciduous shrub is a good substitute for burning bush. It grows 3–4’ tall and wide. Leaves emerge a deep burgundy and become vivid red in autumn. Yellow flowers open in early summer and attract pollinators. Adaptable to most soils and tolerant of dry shady locations. T-22 Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon Variegata' — Worplesdon Variegata sweetgum A smaller version of the species and more pyramidal in form. It can become 40’ x 25’ at maturity. It is a deciduous tree with star-shaped, dark green leaves that become red, purple or yellow in the fall. Round, prickly, hard fruits can be a problem so plant where this will not be an issue. For optimum growth, plant in rich, evenly moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Zones 5–9;  Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc.

T-23 Euonymus alata ‘Devil’s Fire’ — Devil’s Fire burning bush A deciduous shrub growing to 5–15’ tall and wide. This cultivar has tighter branching, superior stem hardiness, and more extreme red fall color than the species. Adaptable to a variety of soil types but does not tolerate wet soil. T-24 Fothergilla gardenii — Dwarf fothergilla A slow-growing, deciduous shrub becoming 1.5–3’ x 2–4'. It has fragrant, white, bottlebrush clusters on branch tips in spring. It’s blue-green to green leaves emerge after flowers and turn bright yellow, orange and red in fall. Best in moist, acidic, organically rich, well-drained soil; avoid heavy soil. T-25 Hydrangea paniculata ‘Phantom’ — Phantom panicle hydrangea Huge, up to 15”, creamy-white upright panicles cover this hardy deciduous shrub in midsummer. Panicles gradually fade to a soft pink as they age. Despite the size of blooms, stems are strong enough to hold them, making them ideal for cutting. It’s a quick grower and soon becomes 6–8’ tall and wide. Best in acidic, fertile, moist well-drained soil. Zones 4–8;  Generous Donor — Scarff’s Nursery, Inc.

T-27 Magnolia sieboldii ‘Colossus’ — Oyama magnolia This deciduous tree grows to at least 25’ tall. Dark green leaves are broad and to 8” long. Flowers open in late spring–early summer. Each white, fragrant bloom has rosy stamens, up to 18 petals and can be 5” across. Plants prefer rich, well-drained, slightly acid loam. Zones 4–9;   Generous Donor — Decker’s Nursery

T-28 Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris ‘Miranda’ — Miranda climbing hydrangea This is a vigorously growing, deciduous, woody vine. It can become 30–40’ over time. Foliage is heart- shaped and dark green with yellow margins, which fade to creamy white as leaves mature. In late spring to early summer, fragrant, flat flower clusters open. Creamy white to greenish-yellow center blossoms are surrounded by showy white flowers. Prefers rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. T-29 Malus ‘Indian Magic’ — Indian Magic flowering crabapple A deciduous small tree growing 15–20’ tall and wide. In April, 1½“, deep pink flowers emerge from dark red buds. Bright red, oval, ½“ fruit form and turn reddish orange with frost. Fruits attract birds. Foliage changes from deep green to golden orange in autumn. Indian Magic has fair resistance to scab, good resistance to fireblight and cedar apple rust, and excellent resistance to mildew. Best in medium moist, well- drained, acidic loams. T-30 Kerria japonica ‘Pleniflora’ — Pleniflora Japanese kerria This deciduous shrub grows to 8-10’ and has slender, arching, yellowish-green stems that remain an attractive green in winter. Pleniflora is more upright than the species. It has rounded, double yellow flowers (to 2” across) that open April to May. Prefers loamy soil that is moderately fertile. T-31 Buxus sempervirens ’Wanford Page' — Wanford Page boxwood T-32 Unique, colorful boxwood. New growth is a luminescent butter-yellow. Foliage matures to green. T-34 Calycanthus floridus ’Athens’ — Athens Carolina allspice This allspice cultivar has yellow fragrant flowers instead of dark red of the species. A deciduous shrub growing to 6–9’ x 6–12’ and best in rich, loamy soil. Zones 4–8;  Generous Donor — Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc.

T-35 Malus x domestica ‘Northern Spy’ — Northern Spy apple tree Large, vigorous tree with attractive, large, thin, greenish-yellow skinned fruit flushed and striped scarlet red. Apple flesh is yellow to white, rather firm, tender, crisp, juicy, slightly sweet and mildly acidic. Stores well. Good for pies or eating fresh. More than one variety must be planted for best pollination and subsequent fruit production. Tree blooms late so less late spring frost damage. T-36 Metasequoia glyptostroboides — Dawn redwood This is a fast-growing, deciduous needled conifer with a conical habit that matures to 70–100’ x 15–25’. Its foliage turns orange-brown in fall. T-38 Rhamnus frangula ‘Ron Williams’ PP# 14791/Proven Winners — Fine line buckthorn This plant is a cross between the columnar and cutleaf forms of buckthorn. It is ideal for narrow spaces growing 5’ x 1.5–2’. It is not weedy or invasive and rarely produces seed. Fall color is butter-yellow. Adaptable to many soil types and is deer resistant. T-39 cv. 'WFH1' PP# 22976 — Tower™ blackgum This deciduous tree is well suited for tight spaces, growing 30–40’ x 10–15’. Its dark, shiny green leaves turn bright yellow, orange, red or scarlet in the autumn. Birds eat its tiny black fruits as soon they ripen. T-40 Physocarpus opulifolius ’Jefam’ Amber Jubilee™ — Amber Jubilee™ Jefam ninebark A deciduous, compact shrub that typically grows 5–6’ x 4’. New growth bears foliage that is orange with yellow veins and turns purple in autumn. However, foliage on older growth is green in summer. Small pink or white flower clusters open in late spring and develop into reddish fruit. Best in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Zones 2–8;   Generous Donor — C. M. Brown Nurseries, Inc.

T-41 Pieris japonica ‘Mt. Fire’ — Mt. Fire Japanese pieris This cultivar has fiery red emerging leaves that mature glossy dark green, and heavy, pendulous flower clusters. It grows as a spreading mound 4’ x 3’ over the first 10 years and may become 6-8’ tall. Bell- shaped, white flowers open in early spring. Leaves are evergreen. T-42 Taxodium distichum — Bald cypress A deciduous, needled conifer growing 50–75’ x 15–20’ with a strong central leader. Fall color varies from orange to cinnamon. T-43 Rhododenron x ‘Girard’s Hot Shot‘ — Hot Shot Azalea This evergreen azalea has dark reddish-orange flowers with dark red spotting that bloom in clusters in May. Its growth is rounded and compact becoming 2–3' x 3–4'. Leaves are small, glossy, and medium green that become dark yellow-green in winter. Grows best in acidic, organically rich, medium moist, moisture- retentive but well-drained soil. Zones 5–8;  Generous Donor — Decker’s Nursery

T-44 Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Dart’s Gold’ — Dart’s Gold ninebark This is a compact, mounded, deciduous shrub that typically grows 5’ tall and wide. Maple-like leaves (to 4” long) open golden yellow and mature to chartreuse/lime green by mid summer. In fall, they turn yellow with bronze. Small white flowers bloom in spiraea-like clusters in late spring. Its common name derives from the fact that, on mature branches, bark exfoliates revealing several layers of reddish to light brown inner bark. T-45 Parrotia persica — Persian ironwood Small, deciduous tree growing 20–40’ x 20–30’, with exfoliating, mottled bark. T-46 Salix matsudana ‘Tortuosa’ — Curly Willow As the common name and cultivar name both suggest, this deciduous tree is noted for its twisted and contorted branches, branchlets and lance-shaped leaves. It is an upright female clone that typically grows 20-30’ x 10-15’. After leaves drop, its contorted form is an asset to the winter landscape. Grow in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil. T-47 Rhododendron x Dandy Man® Pink — Dandy Man® Pink rhododendron Pink flowers cover this broadleaf evergreen in spring. The shrub grows 6–8’ tall and wide and has glossy, dark green foliage. T-48 Viburnum carlcephalum — Frangrant snowball This is an open, rounded, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub, which typically grows 6-10' tall and wide. Fragrant white flowers in dense, snowball-like clusters (3–5" across) open in late spring. Flowers produce red berry-like fruits, which ripen black. Grayish-green leaves turn reddish-maroon in fall. T-49 Prunus ‘Kwanzan’ — Japanese flowering cherry Kwanzan Japanese flowering cherry is noted for its showy spring blooms. This deciduous tree is vase shaped with ascending branching and a spreading-rounded crown. It typically grows 25–30’ tall and wide. Abundant, deep-pink, double flowers (to 2.5” across) bloom in pendant clusters of 2–5 in April just before or as the dark green leaves emerge. Fall foliage color is yellow to orange-bronze. T-50 Weigela florida First Editions™ ‘Rainbow Sensation®’ — Rainbow Sensation® weigela This deciduous shrub has a profusion of soft pink, trumpet-shaped flowers that blanket variegated foliage. It has a rounded growth habit and grows to 3–4’ tall and wide. Flowers attract hummingbirds and can be cut for floral arrangements. Best in average, medium-moist, well–drained soil. T-51 Quercus petraea 'Columnaris' — Sessile Oak A small, columnar, deciduous tree. It grows to about 39’. Its branches and leaves grow upwards showing that leaves are glossy, dark green on upper surfaces and lighter on lower surfaces. Acorns lack stems, thus, its common name. T-52 Rhododendron x ‘P.J.M’ — P.J.M, rhododendron A durable rhododendron with small clusters of bright lavender-purple blooms that contrast with its small, dark green leaves. The evergreen foliage has a mahogany-brown winter color. This variety is noted for its tolerance for heat as well as cold. T-53 Weigela florida ‘Bokrasopea’ — Sonic Bloom® Red reblooming weigela An upright, deciduous shrub growing 4–5’ tall and wide. T-54 Xanthocyparis nootkatensis ‘Pendula’ — Weeping Nootka cypress This conifer, also known as Chamaecyparius nootkatensis ‘Pendula’, is a slender, pyramidal, weeping form that may grow to 35’ x 12’ but is often much smaller. It features a nodding central leader with widely- spaced, ascending to arching to horizontal branches. Drooping branchlets have flattened sprays of scale- like blue-green to gray-green needles. Plant in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. Zones 4–7;   Generous Donor — The Siebenthaler Company, Inc

T-55 Cryptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides' — Snake-branched Japanese cedar The irregular conical form of this evergreen conifer is described by its common name. It is fast growing (10–12” annually) and can become an odd looking, accent plant 10’ x 5’ in 10 years. Medium green needles lay nearly flat against stems. In winter, needles turn a mix of rust, burgundy and ebony. Prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil. Does not tolerate dry soil. Zones 6–8.  Generous Donor — The Siebenthaler Company, Inc.

Fall foliage is burgundy-purple. It is a tough, adaptable plant and makes an excellent groundcover, especially on a sunny slope. Deer resistant. S-22 Fothergilla gardenii — Dwarf fothergilla A slow-growing, deciduous shrub becoming 1.5–3’ x 2–4'. It has fragrant, white, bottle-brush flower clusters on branch tips in spring. It’s blue-green to green leaves emerge after flowers and turn bright yellow, orange and red in fall. Best in moist, acidic, organically rich, well-drained soil; avoid heavy soil.
