Marx, Windows Into the Soul: Surveillance and Popular Culture, Chapter A
Marx, Windows Into the Soul: Surveillance and Popular Culture, Chapter A Culture and Contexts (intro from printed book) News stories don’t satisfy on a human level. We know that Guantanamo is still open, but do we really know what that means?’ The idea is to experience an emotional understanding, so it’s not just an intellectual abstraction. -Laura Poitras, filmmaker The structure, process and narrative units that make up most of the book rely on language in presenting facts and argument. In contrast, the emphasis in this unit is on forms of artistic expression. .Images and music are one component of the culture of surveillance that so infuses our minds and everyday life. The symbolic materials and meanings of culture are social fabrications (though not necessarily social deceptions). They speak to (and may be intended to create or manipulate) needs, aspirations, and fears. Culture communicates meaning and can express (as well as shape) the shared concerns of a given time period and place. Surveillance technology is not simply applied; it is also experienced by agents, subjects, and audiences who define, judge and have feelings about being watched or a watcher. Our ideas and feelings about surveillance are somewhat independent of the technology per se. As with the devil in Spanish literary tradition (image below) the artist can serve to take the lid off of what is hidden, revealing deeper meanings. Here the artist acts in parallel to the detective and the whistleblower: Marx, Windows Into the Soul: Surveillance and Popular Culture, Chapter A In the original version of the book I divided the cultural materials into two units. -

Of Eagles, Goats, and Space Men
Of Eagles, Goats, and Space Men Patrick Madden My wife, the mother of our four children, a generally responsible woman who cares deeply for her family and tends to order and general neatness of place and of time, stayed out until almost two a.m. last night visiting our neighbors the Aguilars, whose name must mean something about tending eagles, whereas Karina’s maiden name, Cabrera, has something to do with tending goats. My own last name, Madden, may derive from the Gaelic for “little dog,” though my family coat of arms features a falcon seizing a duck. My son, being the fourth of a continuous line of Patrick Charles Mad- He glared and droned, “Hey, don’t knock it.” It didn’t really matter that dens that began in 1915 with my grandfather, and being the son of a we weren’t. Besides the slightly repetitive “Hold Your duck is already dead or dying, which might keep the falcon occupied Head Up,” their other big hit—made bigger, years later, when covered by while the eagle goes for the goat. February 2021
(Header by Sven Kramer) FEBRUARY 2021 Welcome to our new readers. This February newsletter marks the end of our eighth year of Russ Ballard News. What is more, we are finding more and more to report. We know that Russ has no intention of slowing down so, from next month, here we go into year nine. Now, having said we have plenty to report, it has been quite a slow news month, but we do have our own super sleuth who has discovered a few very interesting things for us. Many thanks to Dave Williams for this and all his work for the newsletter and thanks to Greg Zimmermann for his contribution to this month's edition. Best wishes Sue THIS MONTH FROM RUSS Hello Everybody and Welcome to new friends, I don’t know about you but after weeks of negative news, virus variants, the dark wintery weather recently, now the freezing cold, I can feel a change in the air. The daffs are showing out of the ground, the lighter, longer days are coming, and the promise of spring is everywhere…. don’t you love it!! Oh, Magic! The promise of Spring, longer, warmer days, blossom on the trees and then, ‘Summer’…. I guess the insecurity of a changing pandemic is always there but it seems we’re doing well in the vaccination area and that’s positive - let's hope we can convince the rest of the world to follow suit. I’m sure we’ll be dining out, shopping on the high street and the malls again, and there’s sure to be surprises that will be coming our way…. -
Record Dreams Catalog
RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores. -

Buma Music Academy - Pop
