... ... ....... ....... ... ... i 3 ABSTRACT Assessments of the stock status of Atlantic salmon were conducted on the Margaree, Middle, Baddeck, North, and Grand rivers of SFAs 18 and 19, Cape Breton Island . These rivers account for 90+% of the total recreational fishing effort exerted on the Island's 21 rivers reportedly fished for salmon in 1997 . Juvenile salmon abundance was assessed on the Sydney, Tillard, Skye and Mabou rivers . Returning salmon were either counted at fishways or estimated by mark-and-recapture techniques. Estimated returns of 4,938 large and 756 small salmon to the Margaree, and 636 large and 122 small salmon to the No rth contributed to the attainment, in total, of 320% and 330% of respective conservation requirements . Returns of 346 large and 68 small fish to the Middle .River, 189 large and 62 small fish to Baddeck River, and a total of 152 fish to the Grand River contributed to the attainment of 72, 44 and 65% of their respective conservation requirements . Evidence of lateness of salmon returning to some rivers raised unce rtainty about completeness of estimates to the Middle, Baddeck and perhaps, No rth rivers . Prognoses for 1998, based on forecast models, juvenile salmon densities, recent estimates of an index of overwinter habitat in the North Atlantic and numbers of hatchery smolts stocked in 1997 are uncertain . However, large salmon of the Margaree and North rivers have achieved conservation requirements for over a decade and should continue to do so in 1998, the abundance of small salmon relative to conservation is less certain . Returns to the Grand River should approach conservation requirements, those of the Middle, and Baddeck rivers are unlikely to achieve conservation requirements in 1998 .     Dalhousie University- Environmental Science Barriers to Fish Passage in Nova Scotia The Evolution of Water Control Barriers in Nova Scotia’s Watershed By: Gillian Fielding Supervisor: Shannon Sterling Submitted for ENVS 4901- Environmental Science Honours Abstract Loss of connectivity throughout river systems is one of the most serious effects dams impose on migrating fish species. I examine the extent and dates of aquatic habitat loss due to dam construction in two key salmon regions in Nova Scotia: Inner Bay of Fundy (IBoF) and the Southern Uplands (SU). This work is possible due to the recent progress in the water control structure inventory for the province of Nova Scotia (NSWCD) by Nova Scotia Environment. Findings indicate that 586 dams have been documented in the NSWCD inventory for the entire province. The most common main purpose of dams built throughout Nova Scotia is for hydropower production (21%) and only 14% of dams in the database contain associated fish passage technology. Findings indicate that the SU is impacted by 279 dams, resulting in an upstream habitat loss of 3,008 km of stream length, equivalent to 9.28% of the total stream length within the SU. The most extensive amount of loss occurred from 1920-1930. The IBoF was found to have 131 dams resulting in an upstream habitat loss of 1, 299 km of stream length, equivalent to 7.1% of total stream length. The most extensive amount of upstream habitat loss occurred from 1930-1940. I also examined if given what I have learned about the locations and dates of dam installations, are existent fish population data sufficient to assess the impacts of dams on the IBoF and SU Atlantic salmon populations in Nova Scotia? Results indicate that dams have caused a widespread upstream loss of freshwater habitat in Nova Scotia howeverfish population data do not exist to examine the direct impact of dam construction on the IBoF and SU Atlantic salmon populations in Nova Scotia.

This paper is identical in aim and method with its three pre­ decessors, which were published in the immediately foregoing volumes of these Transactions. In a word, I am trying to apply the principles of scientific analysis to a very interesting subject especially prone to doubt and error. The comparative method which I use, explained in the introduction to the first paper, is proving wonderfully successful in solving the problems, as this paper will further illustrate. For convenience of reference I may add that the former papers made analysis of the names Oromocto, Magaguadavic, Upsalquitch, Manan, Nepisiguit, Kouchibouguac, Anagance, Wagan, Pokiok, Penniac, Bocabec, Pentagoet-Penobscot, Pohenegamook, and Cobs- cook, and used the roots thus made available in the analysis of a good many other words, both existent and extinct, of lesser importance. Of these extinct Indian names,—indigenous to the country, ap­ propriate to the places, and often reducible to a highly pleasing form, —the greater number may be revived to obvious advantage when additional place-names become needed in future; and I have tried to suggest simplified and softened forms for such purpose.

    Placenaming on Cape Breton Island A different view from the sea: placenaming on Cape Breton Island William Davey Cape Breton University Sydney NS Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT : George Story’s paper A view from the sea: Newfoundland place-naming suggests that there are other, complementary methods of collection and analysis than those used by his colleague E. R. Seary. Story examines the wealth of material found in travel accounts and the knowledge of fishers. This paper takes a different view from the sea as it considers the development of Cape Breton placenames using cartographic evidence from several influential historic maps from 1632 to 1878. The paper’s focus is on the shift names that were first given to water and coastal features and later shifted to designate settlements. As the seasonal fishing stations became permanent settlements, these new communities retained the names originally given to water and coastal features, so, for example, Glace Bay names a town and bay. By the 1870s, shift names account for a little more than 80% of the community names recorded on the Cape Breton county maps in the Atlas of the Maritime Provinces . Other patterns of naming also reflect a view from the sea. Landmarks and boundary markers appear on early maps and are consistently repeated, and perimeter naming occurs along the seacoasts, lakes, and rivers. This view from the sea is a distinctive quality of the island’s names.
