  • Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience
Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience by Christine Sarah Steinbock A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014 Christine Sarah Steinbock ii Abstract Facing the Future with a Foot in the Past Americana, Nostalgia, and the Humanization of Musical Experience Americana, a musical genre defined by its place in a lineage of roots music styles and a nostalgic outlook is enjoying increasing mainstream popularity in response to general societal unease about the fast pace of social change and the increasing presence of technology in everyday life. Americana artists’ invocations of the past cultivate a psychic landscape of collective memory that quells fears of change by asserting the sustained value of the past. Instead of actively resisting social and technological change Americana artists, listeners and promoters embrace technology in service of a nostalgically- motivated humanization and disintermediation of musical performance and consumption. Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings (who perform as “Gillian Welch”) and their 2011 album The Harrow & the Harvest are analyzed vis-à-vis the ways in which their musical and visual invocations of the rural past dialogue with a psychic landscape of collective memory. iii Acknowledgements I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to study in the Music and Culture program at Carleton and the privilege of working alongside such dedicated scholars, professors and fellow students alike. I want to especially thank my supervisor, Dr.

  • Nyt Album Fra Little Dragon - "Nabuma Rubberband" Release 12
2014-02-14 11:59 CET NYT ALBUM FRA LITTLE DRAGON - "NABUMA RUBBERBAND" RELEASE 12. MAJ “A band on the cusp of being very big indeed” - Dazed & Confused, January 2014 After nearly three years since the release of their universally acclaimed 2011 album Ritual Union,Little Dragon return with their highly anticipated fourth album, the futuristic sounding Nabuma Rubberband, via their new label Because Music (Justice,Metronomy, Django Django, Major Lazer) on 12 May 2014. Having premiered as Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record In The World’ last night, with the first single ‘Klapp Klapp’. The Gothenburg electro-R&B adventurers were the latest artists to be invited to curate a ‘Dazed Visionaries’ takeover on Dazed Digital this week, highlighting the work of artists who have inspired their creative life, culminating with the video for ‘Klapp Klapp’ premiered today. ‘Klapp Klapp’ is the first in a two-part collaboration with the creative director Nabil (Frank Ocean, James Blake, Kanye West). Part one is directed by Taylor Cohen and features an enigmatic young zombie girl in a post-apocalyptic landscape at the start of her life / death. Watch the striking piece of film here: (insert link). Part two will follow later this year and is directed by Nabil. Musically inspired by the more experimental pockets of Prince's back catalogue, club culture and the vintage Janet Jackson slow jams Yukimi used to listen to wandering around Gothenburg during the unrelenting winter, Nabuma Rubberband has a different feel to previous Little Dragon albums. “When you put some of Janet's really slow stuff on you feel like you're floating,” Yukimi explains.

Four years later we launched the three models in the AT700 series, which represent the origin of our headphones. That was almost 40 years ago, so believe us when we say, sound is something we take very seriously! Our passion and expertise are evident in our headphones, each one of which is designed with a specific purpose in mind. When you use headphones, you wear them. No other kind of audio equipment is so integrated with your body. Headphones are more than a listening device: they’re a statement about who you are and how you, the listener, interpret your music. In harnessing the latest technology, Audio-Technica’s aim is to provide you with the best possible headphones; headphones that will continue to impress you with their acoustic performance, comfortable fit and style. This booklet introduces you to just some of the headphone models available this year, so thanks for your attention, and welcome to Audio-Technica’s Year of the Headphone. NOISY FIELDS: INTERFERENCE AND EQUIVOCALITY IN THE SONIC LEGACIES OF INFORMATION THEORY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Nicholas Adrian Knouf August 2013 © 2013 Nicholas Adrian Knouf Some rights reserved (see Appendix A). NOISY FIELDS: INTERFERENCE AND EQUIVOCALITY IN THE SONIC LEGACIES OF INFORMATION THEORY Nicholas Adrian Knouf, Ph.D. Cornell University 2013 Noisy Fields: Interference and Equivocality in the Sonic Legacies of Information eory discusses the ways in which noise causes interferences within disciplinary fields. Noise tends to bring diverse disciplinary approaches together, interfering in their constitution and their dynamics. I understand noise to be more than ei- ther positive revolutionary potential or negative disruption; instead, noise functions equivocally, possessing aspects of each pole in varying degrees. As such, it is vi- tal to follow the machinations of noise. Considering noise as a material-discursive phenomenon, I trace its intersections with sonic practices and information theory. Noise was a key point of contention in the early debates surrounding the develop- ment of information theory, and I examine some situations that provide alternatives to the standard formulations. I then trace the interrelationships between informa- tion theory, noise, and early electronic music in the 1950s, outlining how artistic experiences necessitated the development of new information theories. Consider- ing the confluence of sound and information in finance, I show how noise is both understood as a potential source of monetization while ultimately confounding at- tempts at complete capture. I turn to the nexus of speech, the voice, and noise, to consider situations of parrhesia, or “fearless speech”, that consists of noisy interfer- ences within social systems via the activity of robotic performing objects.
