The trees this year were gorgeous. Now it is time to talk about the reality of having these trees in your yard. Bradford Pears Calling All (Pyrus calleryana ‘Bradford’) are spring-flowering trees that are native to Korea and China. They were first introduced to Western horticulture Bridge Players in 1908 and in 1963 the USDA introduced them commercially. They March 28th became a favorite of landscapers and were used extensively in both 1st: Richard Winter home and urban landscapes. 2nd: Bob Fischer Bradford Pears are rapid growers and can increase 15 feet in a 10 year time period. They 3rd: Mary Reider can grow to be 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide. They are thornless trees that have beautiful white spring flowers, which makes them very attractive additions to your yard. They are April 4th also fairly resistant to disease and pests, another attractive feature. 1st Bob Fischer Now for the hate part! The major problem with Bradford Peasr is that they have a 2nd Richard Winter fairly short life span. Most trees only last from 15 to 25 years. Here is why. The angles of 3rd Frankie Martin the Bradford ’s branches in relation to the trunk are too narrow and as those tightly- April 11th crowded branches grow in diameter, the tree begins to push itself apart. When a strong 1st Bob Fischer wind or an ice storm comes along, the tree self-destructs. Large branches split and break 2nd Richard Winter off sometimes landing on a roof, sometimes causing other types of property damage. If you have a tree older than 15 years you have to be very vigilant. With regular pruning and April 18th installing cables and braces to support weak joints you can add to the life of a Bradford 1st Pat Hodgson Pear. You may get 20 to 25 years out of the tree. Compare that to the Yoshino Cherry 2nd Mary Reider (Prunus x yedoensis) which lives between 100 and 150 years. In addition, the flowers of 3rd: Kaylene Smith the Bradfored Pear have a very unpleasant fragrance. As one article stated “The smell is We welcome all bridge players to reminiscent of rotting flesh or bad fish left for too many days in the hot sun.” The trees join us on Mondays at the Fairfield also produce large amounts of surface roots so they shouldn’t be planted where lawn/soil Plantation Country Club. surface needs to be smooth such as high traffic areas or near concrete patios. Please call Lastly, Bradford Pears are currently listed on the Invasive Plant Pest Species of South Susan Logan: 404-718-9166 Carolina list and the Tennessee Exotic Pest Plant Council’s watch list of invasive plants. To reserve your seat at the table Bradford Pears were originally bred to be sterile however; they readily cross-pollinate with other varieties of pear trees and subsequently produce . The disseminated by Stitching Time birds, which results in very thorny thickets of wild pear trees throughout the south. So, what do I do you ask? Well, watch your older Bradford Pears closely for signs that they are splitting and if you have to remove one, do not replace it with another Bradford Pear. There are several replacement trees that have wonderful flowers but do not have the issues of the Bradford Pear. A favorite is the Yoshino Cherry (Prunus x yedoensis). Our next meeting will be on It flowers white in the spring and doesn’t have the Bradford Pears’ problems.
