Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

Each year in the spring hundreds of people attend this event held on the CMC campus and sponsored by I-Place with support from Community Friends. The attendees come for the wonderful food provided by the international students, great entertainment, and a variety of other booths where they can purchase home-made bakery products, trinkets and treasures, and drinks, or where kids can listen to stories, have their faces painted, dress up in international costumes, etc. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to bring together: international students, American students, and people from Claremont and surrounding communities. From the very beginning Community Friends of International Students has been an integral part of this event. There are several members of our organization who have worked at the Festival for over 20 years. Some have been helping since the inception of this event. Members of Community Friends have maintained their involvement over the years because it is such a rewarding experience to be a part of an event that brings the colleges and community together in such a joyous way. Community Friends would very much like to continue our traditional involvement with the Festival. However, if we want to maintain a vibrant Festival for the future, it is going to be very important for our organization, and for the Festival itself, to recruit new volunteers to help.

Others wrote their names larger in the pages of rock history; others scored more hits. But none were truer to their dreams than the Pie, and none so fearlessly marched to their own idiosyncratic drum. From the opening chords of “Natural Born Woman,” their all conquering debut single, through to the street anthem “Road Hog” that highlighted their farewell set Street Rats, Humble Pie had everything – ribaldry, raunchiness, and a raucous charm that never let up. Plus, was there ever a better white soul singer than Marriott? If there was, we never heard him. We didn’t need to – we already had Steve. The amalgam of two dispirited pop idols, Steve Marriott (ex-Small Faces) and Peter Frampton (ex-The Herd), those bands were already crumbling when the pair first joined forces in what the music papers were swift to dub a new supergroup – one more in a queue of such things, it must be said, but the first that really did look like being more than the sum of its parts. Completed by former Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and Apostolic Intervention drummer Jerry Shirley, Humble Pie debuted in summer 1969 with a single, "Natural Born Boogie" (subsequently retitled “Natural Born Woman” in the US), and an album, As Safe As Yesterday, that all but blueprinted the burgeoning hard rock landscape of the late 1960s.

Claudia worked professionally with many of the producers and sidemen musicians who developed the foundation of the late 60s and 70s pop music scene both in the United States and England. Journalists have documented that Lennear was the muse for songs written by Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Leon Russell. Lennear arms “Brown Sugar”, “Lady Grinning Soul”, “ A Song for You”, “Masquerade”, and “She Smiles Like a River” were either written for, or about, her. Lennear did a number of photography sessions with photographer Norman See in 1972, when Claudia was at the height of her career and Norman was essentially just beginning his. Buff, who is on the Claremont Heritage Board of Directors, introduced David, the Executive Director of Claremont Her- itage. David has a 30+ year career over which he has curat- ed and produced more than 100 exhibitions relating to dec- orative arts, architecture, design and photography. His ca- reer includes having been a retail gallery owner. He has been the Executive Director since 2011. The mission of the Claremont Heritage organization is to advance, preserve and celebrate the historic architectural, natural and cultural resources of the community of Claremont through collaboration, education and advocacy. The Treasury of Claremont Music archive project clearly supports that mission. This project was conceived several years ago by Tom Skelly, an artist, radio DJ, and avid music fan, in order to document Claremont’s expansive music community and the musicians who have called the Inland Empire home over the years. These artists and musicians have made an indelible impact on the community’s cultural history, the objective of the project is to document and share this legacy for future generations to experience.     Chapter 11 “RESPECT THE BOARDS!” December 1970 to July 1971 In which we Rock On at Olympic; Beanie-Cake meets Hector the Humping Dog; we learn a lesson from Sophie Tucker; and we rock the Fillmore… but have to rescue the mix; and we get buzzed and buzz around with the Who. Being home again was very strange: it was the first Christmas without Mum, and I moved into the farm over the same holiday period. I was deter- mined to put together a crew to do the work on the farm that was made up entirely of guys I grew up with, most of them from the old Waltham Cross Mods, who were at their height a ferocious team, to say the least. I wanted to use people I could trust, and I achieved that with no problem. To a man, these lads were the best at what they did, and, just like before, when Angus and I had our various bands, they were extremely protective and conscien- tious about taking care of their little mate. By now, I’d become a bit of a Waltham Cross legend in a “local lad does good” sort of way. The farm screamed out for a horticultural makeover, and, as gardening had become Dad’s main hobby, it was the perfect job for him. I gave him the reins to do entirely as he wished. He was also the ideal man to oversee the house rebuild, and he did a superb job on that, too. His other job was fending off all the local widows, as he had become quite the catch from their point of view—not that he was rich or anything, but he often borrowed the Rolls- Royce, and the effect that car had on women young and old was amazing.
