It is situated on the bank of the Sava river and protected by the mountain Medvednica from the north. The cultural and older part of modern-day Zagreb is actually based around two ancient hill communiGes, those of Kaptol and Gradec. Hungarian King Ladislaus founded a Bishopric in Kaptol in 1094, and then, following the departure in the 13th century of the Mongols, King Bela IV declared Gradec to be a royal autonomous city as a means of aKracJng foreign arJsans. These honours and awards sparked compeJJon and rivalry between the two communiJes constantly endeavouring to outdo each other both poliJcally and commercially. It was not unJl the 17th century that the two enJJes merged to form Zagreb. Though this area remains the cultural heart of the city and the bishopric in Kaptol has been upgraded to archbishopric status, development since the 18th century has seen most of the commercial acJvity shi3 to the southern expansion of the city. On declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Zagreb was officially declared the capital of a newly independent European state. Zagreb is a city of green parks and promenades with numerous resorts in the beauJful surroundings. Zagreb can offer its visitors the Baroque atmosphere of the Upper Town, picturesque open-air markets, diverse shopping faciliJes, an abundant selecJon of cra3s and a choice of vernacular cuisine. Zagreb has been the foundaJon from which many excellent scienJsts and arJsts have ventured out into the world. Zagreb has also proven to be a great host to many internaJonal congresses, corporate meeJngs, cultural and sporJng events, and a place where true professionalism is combined with an honest and open heart. Zagreb has an internaJonal airport which is well connected to the world. Zagreb is also a good central place from which one can visit other parts of the country like Dubrovnik and other parts of the AdriaJc Coast. The University of Zagreb is the oldest and the biggest University in Southeastern Europe. Ever since its funding in 1669, the University has been constantly growing and developing. In 2011, University of Zagreb was ranked among 500 Best UniversiGes of the World. The beginnings of what would later become the University date back to 1669 when Emperor and King Leopold I of Habsburg issued a decree granJng the establishment of the Jesuit Academy of the Royal Free City of Zagreb. The decree gave a formal and legal status to the study of philosophy in Zagreb and the Neoacademia Zagrabiensis officially became a Public InsJtuJon of Higher EducaJon. The academy was run by the Jesuits for more then a century unJl the order was dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773. In 1776 Empress and Queen Maria Theresa issued a decree founding the Royal Academy of Science which consisted of three faculJes – philosophy, theology and law. In 1861 Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer proposed the founding of University of Zagreb to the CroaJan Parliament. During his visit to Zagreb in 1869 the Emperor Franz Joseph signed the decree establishing the University of Zagreb, which he raJfied five years later. On 19th of October 1874 a ceremony was held formerly marking the founding of the University of Zagreb, making it the third university in the Hungarian Realm and Austro-Hungarian Empire. The University of Zagreb now consists of 29 faculGes, three art academies and the Centre for CroaGan Studies. 5 Brosura2:Layout 1 30.6.2013 23:57 Page 6 Social and Emotional Competence in a Changing World Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, Croatia The 4th ENSEC Conference will be held at the Faculty of Teacher EducaGon in Savska cesta 77, 10 000 Zagreb, CroaGa. The Faculty of Teacher EducaGon at the University of Zagreb is the leading insGtuGon for educaGng Primary school and Preschool teachers in the Republic of CroaGa. The Faculty operates at three locaGons, with the main branch in Zagreb and local branches in Petrinja and Čakovec, with approximately 3,000 students on roll. The Faculty has three departments: Teacher EducaGon Studies, Preschool EducaGon Studies and EducaGonal Studies. Faculty development prioriJes include the promoJon of evidence based research, the development of internaJonal co- operaJon and creaJvity in educaJon. The Faculty publishes “The CroaJan Journal of EducaJon” which aims to promote and improve the study of basic educaJonal sciences, teaching methodologies and related fundamental sciences, and computer and communicaJonal science as well as the other sciences and arts, in English. The Faculty co-operates with the Department of Pedagogy and Sociology of the University of Münster (Germany), the Faculty of Pedagogy of the University of Skopje (FYR of Macedonia), Faculty of EducaJon of the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), and the Faculty of Teacher EducaJon in Baja (Hungary). The Faculty hosts its own art gallery, which has organized exhibiJons by CroaJan and InternaJonal arJsts, and an acJve music department (Glazbena scena) that regularly holds concerts featuring a variety of musical genres. ExhibiJons and concerts are well aKended by students, faculty employees and the general public. The Faculty of Teacher EducaJon of University of Zagreb has organized five InternaJonal Conferences for Advanced and SystemaJc Research ECNSI (2007-2011) and is delighted to host the Fourth InternaJonal ENSEC Conference. The conference takes place at the Faculty of Teacher EducaGon on the 3rd floor. 6 Brosura2:Layout 1 30.6.2013 23:57 Page 7 4th ENSEC Conference Zagreb, Croatia, 3 - 7 July 2013 WHAT TO SEE Zagreb, the capital of CroaGa , is situated in the northwestern CroaJa, and it lies on the crossroads between south and middle Europe, and between eastern and western Europe. It is a place where a German influenced sense of order is mixed with a Balkans sense of fun, and, a3er dark, hedonism. Historically , Zagreb used to be comprised of two rival hilltop seKlements, Kaptol and Gradec, which today, along with some other neighbourhoods, consJtute the old city nucleus also called the Upper Town. Kaptol used to be a village, formed around the today's city’s Cathedral. The Focal point of Gradec is St. Mark’s Square called a3er St. Mark’s Church, which is situated on it. St. Mark Church is surrounded by the CroaJan Parliament, called Sabor, on one side, and Prime minister's and his cabinet's offices, situated in Banski Dvori, on the other side. Many museums and galleries are situated in Gradec, just a few steps apart. To name just a few, there are the Klovićevi Dvori Gallery, the Museum of Broken RelaJonships and the CroaJan Museum of Naïve Art. The Palace of Klović (Klovićevi dvori) is, at the moment, hosJng the exhibiJon Masterpieces from the Picasso Museum in Paris. The exhibiJon presents more than one hundred works of art and various documents of the most famous master of the 20th century, the founder of cubism, a painter, sculptor and graphic arJst.     THE CITY WITH A MILLION HEARTS ZAGREB A brief history of Zagreb Zagreb’s history dates back to the Roman times when the urban settlement of Andautonia, inhabited the location of modern Ščitarjevo. The name Zagreb first came into existence in 1904 with the founding of the Zagreb bishopric of Kaptol. In 1242, it became a free royal town and in 1851 it had its own Mayor, Janko Kamauf. In 1945, Zagreb was declared the capital of Croatia. Today's Zagreb has grown out of two medieval settlements that for centuries developed on neighbouring hills. The first written mention of the city dates from 1094, when a diocese was founded on Kaptol, while in 1242, neighbouring Gradec was proclaimed a free and royal city. Both the settlements were surrounded by high walls and towers, remains of which are still preserved. During the Turkish onslaughts on Europe, between the 14th and 18th centuries, Zagreb was an important border fortress. The Baroque reconstruction of the city in the 17th and 18th centuries changed the appearance of the city. The old wooden houses were demolished, opulent palaces, monasteries and churches were built. The many trade fairs, the revenues from landed estates and the offerings of the many craft workshops greatly contributed to the wealth of the city. Affluent aristocratic families, royal officials, church dignitaries and rich traders from the whole of Europe moved into the city. Schools and hospitals were opened, and the manners of European capitals were adopted. The city outgrew its medieval borders and spread to the lowlands. The first parks and country houses were built.
