Rooms combine the hotel's traditional Art Nouveau style with modern amenities such as air- conditioning, satellite TV, a minibar and complimentary WiFi. Day 2, Thu, Sep 26 Zagreb Zagreb, capital and largest city in Croatia, is situated inland between the Sava River and Mt. Medvednica. Its commercial area dates from the 19th century, but its Old Town centers around the adjoining medieval cities of Gradec and Kaptol. Kaptol was the ecclesiastic town, and the neo-Gothic cathedral is still here, as are a new pedestrian mall and trendy night spots. Gradec is a hilly residential section dotted with lovely 19th century homes. A city tour includes the Upper Town, the historic city center, the famous Church of St. Mark, the cathedral, the Croatian National Theater and the arcades and sculptures of Mirogoj Park and Cemetery. The square in front of St. Mark’s Church was Gradec’s main square until the 19th century. On the eastern side is the neoclassical Croatian Parliament, or Sobor, built in 1910. On the west is the Ban’s Court, or Banski Dvori, where the Croatian viceroys lived, and which is now the presidential palace. Iconic St. Mark’s Church in the upper town is famous for its 1880 tile roof with the medieval Croatian coat of arms and the emblem of Zagreb picked out in brilliant colors. Take a quick cable car ride on Zagreb's historic funicular, built in 1890. With a mere 217 feet of track, this is one of the shortest public-transportation funiculars in the world, but also one of the steepest at a 52% grade. The funicular still provides an important (and fun) way to hop between Zagreb's Lower and Upper Towns, the Donji Grad and Gornji Grad. Located north of the city center near the base of Mt Medvednica is Mirogoj Park & Cemetery. Often noted as one of Europe's most beautiful cemeteries, the complex was designed in 1876 by Austrian-born architect Hermann Bollé, who created a significant portion of Zagreb's architectural landmarks and city buildings. Among the most well-known of Croatia's citizens interred here are poet and writer Petar Preradović and painter Vladimir Becić, whose grave was designed by renowned Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Meals: B, D Day 3, Fri, Sep 27 Zagreb • drive to Split via Plitvice Lakes !2 ! ! Get an early start an transfer overland to Split via the Plitvice Lakes Park. The park encompasses a series of waterfalls connecting 16 beautiful lakes. Wooden footbridges wind through the park, setting off its lakes, waterfalls, caves, blossoming meadows, and a gorge that resembles the Grand Canyon. A tour of the 73,000-acre park includes a boat ride and an excursion on the park’s mini-train. You will meet a park guide upon arrival who will lead you through the park. A Welcome to Zagreb As you set out to take a tour round Zagreb, determined to see its highlights, you’ll find that you’ll end up rather enjoying it. Sitting at one of its Viennese- style cafés, strolling leisurely around its streets and promenading through its parks, it’s like you’re starting out on a love affair with this city and its people. And pretty soon you’ll know that this is love in its early stage, the kind that only grows stronger in time. The cosmopolitan buzz of Zagreb will soon strike you. Everything is accessible on foot – from your hotel to the theatre, wandering around the old Upper Town or through the bustling streets of the more modern Lower Town, which has not lost an ounce of its charm despite the eternal march of time. Venture out and let the moment take hold. There is something special about the rustle of leaves as you stroll through the autumn colours of downtown Zrinjevac Park. There is magic in the reflections of the gas lanterns in the Upper Town, as the songs of the street performers evoke their own emotions with their distinctive sound. As night falls, everything becomes soft and subdued; the twinkle of candles in the cathedral and at the mystical Stone Gate; the cafés beckoning you in the twilight with their warm hues. Zagreb is special. It is a long-running tale that allows you room to write your own chapters with your own impressions, something for you to add to the story. Quite simply, Zagreb has a soul.

  • ZAGREB a Brief History of Zagreb
THE CITY WITH A MILLION HEARTS ZAGREB A brief history of Zagreb Zagreb’s history dates back to the Roman times when the urban settlement of Andautonia, inhabited the location of modern Ščitarjevo. The name Zagreb first came into existence in 1904 with the founding of the Zagreb bishopric of Kaptol. In 1242, it became a free royal town and in 1851 it had its own Mayor, Janko Kamauf. In 1945, Zagreb was declared the capital of Croatia. Today's Zagreb has grown out of two medieval settlements that for centuries developed on neighbouring hills. The first written mention of the city dates from 1094, when a diocese was founded on Kaptol, while in 1242, neighbouring Gradec was proclaimed a free and royal city. Both the settlements were surrounded by high walls and towers, remains of which are still preserved. During the Turkish onslaughts on Europe, between the 14th and 18th centuries, Zagreb was an important border fortress. The Baroque reconstruction of the city in the 17th and 18th centuries changed the appearance of the city. The old wooden houses were demolished, opulent palaces, monasteries and churches were built. The many trade fairs, the revenues from landed estates and the offerings of the many craft workshops greatly contributed to the wealth of the city. Affluent aristocratic families, royal officials, church dignitaries and rich traders from the whole of Europe moved into the city. Schools and hospitals were opened, and the manners of European capitals were adopted. The city outgrew its medieval borders and spread to the lowlands. The first parks and country houses were built.
