Duncan Edwards Foundation Information DUNCAN EDWARDS FOUNDATION The foundation is the brain child of award winning producer Rose Cook, who wrote and directed “…and then came Munich” The Duncan Edwards story. The 55-minute documentary tells the life story of the world’s greatest footballer Duncan Edwards, who tragically died on the 21st February 1958 from injuries sustained in the infamous Munich aircraft, which killed 8 of the magnificent Busby Babes, the wonderfully talented young Manchester United players, who under the Management of the iconic Matt Busby were the cream of footballing talent. Duncan gave his heart and soul and ultimately his life to the team that meant so much to him - Manchester United. However, Duncan remained a true Black Country lad who never forgot his home town or its people. The aim of the foundation is to, in Duncan’s name, raise funds to support young people in the Dudley borough who have a great sporting ability, whether it is football, cricket, tennis etc but cannot afford the training, kit or travelling expenses. We want to be able to give them the funds, advise and expertise to follow their dreams and to achieve the way that Duncan did. We are proud of Duncan. As the 60th anniversary approaches, we want his name remembered in our home town. Duncan’s home town. Can you help? We are looking for sponsors, donations, ideas and advice. Together, we can help our children of the future by remembering our Son of the past. For more information please contact: Rose Cook 07701 092994 [email protected] .

The Commemorative Activity at the Grave of Munich Air Disaster Victim, Duncan Edwards: A Social and Cultural Analysis of the Commemorative Networks of a Local Sporting Hero by Gayle Rogers A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire July 2017 ABSTRACT The Commemorative Activity at the Grave of Munich Air Disaster Victim, Duncan Edwards: A Social and Cultural Analysis of the Commemorative Networks of a Local Sporting Hero The Munich Air Disaster claimed the lives of 23 people in a plane crash in Munich in 1958. It is a significant event within modern England’s cultural history as a number of Manchester United footballers, known as the Busby Babes were amongst the dead. The players who died have continued to be extensively commemorated, especially Duncan Edwards. This research considers the commemorative activity associated with Edwards since his death and was initiated when the researcher pondered the extensive commemorative activity by strangers that she encountered at the family grave of her cousin Edwards. The commemoration of the Disaster and of Edwards has been persistent and various with new acts of commemoration continuing conspicuously even after fifty years since the event. Such unique activity particularly demonstrated at Edwards’ grave was considered worthy of further investigation to ascertain why such activity was occurring at such a volume. Although general historical and biographical accounts of the Disaster and Edwards are apparent, specific research concerning the commemoration of the event was not evident. The researcher set out to identify who the commemorators were, why they were undertaking dedicatory acts and what those acts manifest as.

The first club outside Ulster was Dublin Association Football Club which was formed in 1883. At the time, the Irish Football Association (IFA) was the governing body. Based in Belfast, it found it difficult to promote football throughout the country. This led to the formation of the Leinster Football Association in 1892 as the game became more popular in the area. However, there was always a feeling among clubs from outside the Belfast area that the IFA favoured Ulster based clubs-especially when selecting sides for international matches. Despite this, it was not until after the 1916 Rising and the rise of Nationalism that southern affiliates, such as the Leinster FA, took an aggressive approach in their dealings with the IFA. The clubs often threatened to break away, and in early 1921, Bohemians, St. James's Gate and Shelbourne all withdrew from the Irish League, though all three sides decided to remain involved in Cup competitions.
