End of the Spear is a American drama film that recounts the story of Operation Aucain which five American Christian attempted to evangelize the Huaorani Waodani people of the tropical rain forest of Eastern . Based on actual events from in which five male missionaries were speared by a group of the Waodani tribe, the movie End of the Spear the story from the perspective of the son of Nate Saintone of the missionaries End of the Spear in the encounterand Mincayanione of the tribesmen who took part in the attack. The Waodani people of the tropical rain forest along the in a remote and mostly undeveloped the Amazonian region of Ecuador live with a traditional animist worldview. As children, Mincayani saves Dayumae after a vicious nighttime spear attack on a Waodani village by a neighboring tribe, and Dayumae's younger sister in Dayumae's care is killed in the attack. Other events of tribal life are pictured. In a conflict with her family, Dayumae—who, in part, has been blamed for the death of her sister—decides to leave the End of the Spear for her safety, and runs to the "foreigners" around her: foreigners who speak Spanish and dress very differently. is a jungle pilot and End of the Spear mechanicliving with his family at a mission outpost where his job includes flying various missionaries and supplies into remote locations. He builds a small airplane out of wood with his 8-year old son, Steve Saint. Nate becomes obsessed with making contact with a jungle tribe who have resisted contact with the outside world before, often violently: the Waodani. , Nate's older sister has had extensive contact with the now much older Dayumae, and has learned some of the Waodani language from her. Nate does not want to tell his sister End of the Spear his and others plans to attempt contact with the Waodani, for fear she would pass the information along to her superiors, and the planned contact would be forbidden. Young Steve learns a few words of Waodani—"I am your sincere friend"—from Rachel, and ultimately begs his father to learn them before his father and several others land their airplane on a sandbar in the Curaray, and attempt to make peaceful contact with the Waodani, who they know people that area of End of the Spear forest that surrounds the sandbar. Mincayani is now a much older and developed warrior, exhibiting not a little leadership in the tribe. After some days, one Waodani man and two women approach the missionaries who have camped on the sandbar, and have a reasonably friendly, if difficult to communicate, first encounter. Subsequently, misinformation about the meeting is shared with the other Waodani tribal members, and a group of Waodani warriors decide to attack and spear the foreigners. They do so, and all five men associated with the airplane at the sandbar camp are killed with spears; the airplane—which the Waodani refer to as the large wood bee—is destroyed with punctures and slashing by spears. Authorities from Ecuador and the US military come up river in canoes in a large party, protected by many rifles, and recover four of the five bodies. Mincayani asks Steve to live in Ecuador, and become family to the Waodani, like Rachel had. Steve says that would be "impossible;" but does do so a year or so later. Later, Mincayani tells Steve he needs to show him End of the Spear, with no other detail, and takes Steve on the Curaray river in a canoe to the sandbar where his father had been killed many years earlier. Mincayani digs furiously in the bank of the river, and uncovers a bit of the metal frame and fabric of Nate's airplane that the Waodani had buried; tells Steve this is where his father died; and that he had speared his father. Mincayani gives Steve his spear, with the point at his own chest, and tells Steve to kill him. The DVD and some theaters where the movie was shown also included extra footage after the movie ended showing the real life Mincayani and the real life Steve Saint in our modern day. Mincaye visited Steve Saint in America with humorous results while trying to understand American culture. Some secular critics believed the story may be seen as presenting an uncritical view of a situation where native peoples were eventually exploited regardless of "good intentions" [7] such as concerns [ clarification needed ] about SIL International. There was some concern among various Christian groups that lead actor Chad Allenwho portrays aviator missionary Nate Saint in the movie and his son Steve Saint as an adultis openly gay. Some Christian groups that had initially planned to promote the film began to question whether they should. The real Steve Saintwho was heavily involved in the production of the film, has stated in interviews that he himself had reservations, but that God indicated to him that Allen was End of the Spear proper choice. In the end, he couldn't see a better actor filling the role of his father. His public pronouncements did much to quell the controversy. However, the Gospel presented in the movie is the same as it was presented to the Waodani; in concepts and symbols that are present in everyday Waodani language with the name of "God" being replaced with " Waengongi ", the name of the Waodani creator god who no longer communicated with the people. Due to the limitations of the movie format, they have had End of the Spear compress various events and limit the number of characters. As a result, the main Waodani protagonist, Mincayani, is not actually one person in real End of the Spear but rather a composite of the real-life Waodani named Mincaye and various other Waodanis. When five young missionaries, among them and Nate Saint, are End of the Spear to death by the Waorani ina series of events unfold to change the lives of not only the slain missionaries' families, but also Mincayani and his people. Written by Anonymous. I had a chance to view this film at the National Missionary Convention. All I have to say about it A great film. Very inspiring. I will see it again and I will spend top dollar to see it. When it is available to purchase, End of the Spear will be the first in line. The film was beautifully made, and was true to the actual story of the five missionaries who gained their lives by reaching the Waodani. I was moved, shocked, brought to tears as I viewed this realistic portrayal. I would not recommend allowing children under 10 to view. Nothing horrific, just some hard imagery to digest. Would open the door for 20 questions after they viewed the film. I am going to allow my 10 year to see it. Looking for some great streaming picks? The story has been told in Christian circles for End of the Spear years. Infive missionaries were brutally murdered in the Ecuadorian jungle by members of the Waodani tribe they went to serve. And then something amazing End of the Spear the killers became Christians. The martyr's names—Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, , Ed McCully, and —and their sacrifice galvanized a whole generation of missionaries who headed to foreign fields with the slain Elliot's words on their lips, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to End of the Spear what he cannot lose. End of the Spear features the events of from the perspectives of the Waodani tribe leader, Mincayani, a quasi-fictional figure played by Louie Lenardo, and Nate Saint's son, Steve, played as a boy by Chase End of the Spear and as an adult by Chad End of the Spear. Mincayani is a "composite character" primarily based on the real character Mincaye, who was one of the men who killed the missionaries. Shot in Panama using members of the Embera tribe for all but a few key roles, the movie is a stirring, lush production that elevates the visual storytelling portfolio of independent Christian movies. The story reaches back into Mincayani's End of the Spear to show the violence that shaped his culture and mindset. He End of the Spear probably around 20 years old when he first saw the yellow "woodbee" that was Nate Saint's small airplane buzzing above the trees. After a series of tentative contacts involving a bucket lowered from the plane by a long rope, Saint and his fellow missionaries decided to land and meet the natives face to face. In their enthusiasm for reaching out to the Waodani people, the missionaries, especially Elliot, End of the Spear depicted a bit like frat boys—goofy, exuberant, optimistic. On the beach that would become their graveyard, the men trade quips about their evangelistic efforts and ham it up for the camera that Saint was using to document their encounter. The result is a refreshing take on these men who've become End of the Spear protestant saints but were, in reality, just young men embarking on a big adventure, albeit a holy one. The interaction between the Waodani and the missionaries on the beach offers a few laugh-out-loud moments born out of awkward communication, but it inevitably grows grim. End of the Spear includes a recent revelation about what motivated the Waodani people to spear End of the Spear missionaries—a lie told to cover an illicit romance—and doesn't turn its eyes from the resulting violence. During the killings, Mincayani seems remorseful for reasons that aren't clear until much later in the movie. In fact, the movie's main weakness is the way it leaves holes in the audience's understanding of some of the characters' motivations. For example, we don't learn the reasoning behind the Waodani's murderous habits until late in the movie. And something as basic as who's related to whom within the Waodani tribe is sometimes confusing. It's likely that some of these holes in the narrative are the result of the many revisions End of the Spear script went through. If moviegoers leave the theater asking questions, so much the better as far as producer Mart Green is concerned. His company, Every Tribe Entertainment, also recently produced a companion documentary about the events ofBeyond the Gates of Splendorwhich has been circulating among churches. The hope is that the believer who's seen the documentary will be able to bring the non- believer, fresh from the multiplex, "deeper into the truth of the story. And the truth of the story is this: God had a Son who was speared so that we all might know forgiveness. Mincayani and the Waodani learned this when Nate Saint's sister Rachel, along with two of the widows and their children, moved into the Waodani village in the wake of their loved ones' deaths. It was through their witness that much of the tribe converted to Christianity. And it's through the harrowing experience of two men as told in End of the Spear —Steve Saint and Mincaye, now as close as father and son—that moviegoers can learn the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. The violence that characterized Waodani culture is captured in this movie and the images are unsuitable for young children. In keeping with their tradition, End of the Spear Waodani sport little clothing and there are a few scenes of topless adolescent girls. Click for reprint information. Directed by Jim Hanon, End of the Spear is a dramatization of the famous events in which American Christian missionaries were killed in the jungles of Ecuador. Films about religious endeavors usually provoke mainstream critics to voice hysterical and negative reactions, but that is largely because movies made by Christians about Christians are often poorly crafted and preachy. The filmmakers have done their job well enough to earn some measured praise from the mainstream press. Howard Jr. But some, like Mark Holcomb of The Village Voiceare clearly overreacting based on their own extreme prejudice. Is there any word better than "bigotry" for his sneering and condescending reaction? It's the kind of oversweet cinematic Kool-Aid they used to force-feed us in Sunday school. He doesn't criticize the film's religious characters so much as he dislikes the tone of the storytelling, and the heavy-handed use of music. He calls it "inspiring enough to make you wish that the filmmakers had reined in their sentimental excesses. The humane message of the film … is undercut by the religio-mythic trappings attached to it, and by an inescapable air of Kiplingesque smugness in its portrayal End of the Spear civilized whites enlightening rampaging dark-skinned savages. The overawed musical score by Ronald Owen is so obtrusive that it never lets End of the Spear have a feeling of your own. Marcus Yoars Plugged In says the director and his co-writers, Mart Green and Bill Ewing, bring "experience, talent, heart, resources and a commitment to telling the story accurately—from the Waodani point of view. The list goes on, yet maybe no message stands out as much as redemption. Lisa Rice Crosswalk says, "The End of the Spear lends itself to many compelling End of the Spear for the family, such as, 'What would our family be willing to suffer for the sake of the gospel? Denny Wayman and Hal Conklin Cinema in Focus write, "Without being either preachy or obvious, the film takes us through the sacrifice given by the missionary families and the effect it had upon the Waodani. The supernatural power of God is present in the moments of sacrifice as well as in the powerful transformation of this vengeful culture. In the final estimation, Spear is a movie that will be enjoyed by Christians and viewed skeptically by everyone else. For us it will be a great reminder of the power of forgiveness and a reminder of End of the Spear we are called to make disciples of all the world. The story of Steve Saint and Mincayani needs to be told and this is a valid rendition of that tale.
