Time to get involved?

District, Town and Parish Council elections will be taking place on Thursday 2nd May 2019. Nominations happen well in advance of this date, so if you are thinking about becoming a candidate, now is the time to start planning.

Councillors are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job. They are people who are elected to the local council to represent people in their community. Becoming a councillor is a rewarding form of public service. You would be in a position to make a difference to the quality of other people’s daily lives and prospects. Getting your views on electric vehicles Electric vehicles are becoming a viable proposition for a lot of people as a low-carbon and economic way of getting from A to B. They may also help tackle some poor air quality issues. The Government has signalled support for electric vehicles (EVs) by announcing targets for the phasing out of petrol and diesel vehicles and financial support to encourage the uptake of EVs.

We upgraded the charging points in three Council car parks last year and are exploring ways of increasing charging point provision to encourage the uptake of EVs locally. As part of this exploration we have a quick online survey to get an idea of resident’s views about the issue. Please take 10 minutes to complete the survey - we’d love to hear your views.

14 Mid Sussex Matters Winter 2018 www.midsussex.gov.uk HOMES MATTERS INVESTING IN HOMES, STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES

People are the heart of communities, and, homes are a key factor in the health of a neighbourhood.

Social connections improve physical health and are a huge factor in our psychological well-being. One telling study* showed that lack of social connection is a greater detriment to health than obesity, smoking and high blood pressure. On the the flip side, strong social connection leads to a 50% increased chance of longevity.

If a change in circumstances results in you losing your home it can be difficult to find suitable, local accommodation that is affordable. Local Councils may provide temporary housing in some circumstances to households who would otherwise be homeless, but this could be in a different area or a guest house.

In Mid Sussex there is a shortage of temporary accommodation and the Council is often forced to house homeless families outside of the District. MSDC has agreed to acquire up to 30 properties However the recent decision to invest £4million in across the district through purchase or lease to our own temporary accommodation will allow us to provide temporary homes for families and vulnerable offer more local temporary housing, and at a higher people who we are assisting because they are standard. homeless.

Mid Sussex Matters Winter 2018 19 HAVING A GREAT EAST GRINSTEAD CHRISTMAS

East Grinstead does Christmas rather well; understandable of course, being home to ‘Good King Wenceslas’!

Actually, not to the Good King himself, but the lyrics to the famous carol were written by the warden of Sackville College 1846- 1866, the eminent clergyman and hymnodist John Mason Neale. The carol is sung frequently in the town during the festive season and you can even get to sing it in the 400 year old chapel of Sackville College, the very building with a view of Ashdown Forest, from which Rev Neale drew his inspiration. Visit www.sackvillecollege.org.uk for tickets and information.

East Grinstead is a fantastic place to visit at any time of year, but at Christmas it really takes on a magical aura. Walk into the historic High Street with its range of independent retailers and you will instantly feel that you have stepped into the pages of ‘A Christmas Carol’. The traders work feverishly in the build up to the festive period, under cover of brown paper, to prepare their window displays for a much anticipated annual ‘Big Reveal’ and Christmas Lights Switch on.

The High Street is a Conservation area with a long, continuous row of Tudor and medieval timber framed buildings with fantastic floral displays in the War memorial beds. During the summer months these are themed to commemorate anniversaries of local or national importance. This year the beds commemorated the 200th anniversary of John Mason Neale’s birth and the centenary of the end to the hostilities of WWI. At other times of year the plantings are incredibly colourful and often highly fragrant, even in the winter months.

On Sunday 2 December you may hear ‘that’ Christmas carol again as London Road is closed to traffic to host the Christmas family festival. A French market makes its annual visit and the street is filled with charity and craft stalls, food, entertainment, small funfair rides for children and, of course, Santa’s Grotto.
