s someone who loves fashion, you probably wouldn’t ever be able to tell by how I dress. On most days of the week you can find me in one of two variations of black jeans with some sort of hoodie on, and depending on if I woke up Alate, I’m probably rocking a hat. But if you knew me in my younger days of high school, you’d think I didn’t know a single thing about fashion. Before college, I rolled out of bed and wore whatever sweatpants I had on to school with moccasins and an old sports hoodie. That all changed when I got to college. I didn’t start wearing suits to class, mostly because I biked at first, but also a simple glance around campus would show you: we like to keep it casual. But even within those boundaries of keeping it casual, every day on campus I’d be inspired by someone’s fashion. Maybe it was someone rocking a fresh new pair of sneakers that I saw on Instagram the day before, or it was one of my classmates casually walking in wearing a Louis Vuitton belt. Other times it was little things like wanting to cuff my jeans “like that guy” or cut my damn hair because I looked like a scrub. I think the thing I noticed most through my days was how people were so free and able to express themselves through fashion. My high school fashion wasn’t just because I was lazy (okay it was mostly because I was lazy), it was also because the first day I wore Vans to school I was called “emo” and when I wore skinny jeans once, I was hit with, “Are those your sister’s?” In college, however, I nervously wore a cardigan to class only to be hit with compliments from classmates and total strangers.

Copyright Protection And The Music Industry In Nigeria Introduction In Africa, music is an integral part of the culture of the people. In fact, the curious beauty about African music is that it uplifts even as it tells a sad story. Such is the level in which music is revered in Africa. Over the years, the continent has produced musicians and artists who have gone ahead to influence generations both within and outside the continent, creating styles such as afrobeat which has gone on to contribute immensely to the world. The economic importance of music industry has been amply documented. The music industry is one of the fastest growing export sectors of the global service economy. Being a creative expression and related intangible assets, copyright law plays a critical role in determining its performance. The export potential of music is already recognized, in addition to its complementary links countries, and its role in the promotion of national culture. The copyright is one of the essential institutional mechanisms, which has helped facilitate the creation and dissemination of musical works through modern business enterprises, by providing a framework to manage the problems arising from the joint consumption and imperfect excludability of the works. It is part of the institutional framework that helps define a marketable product as well as reliable income flows (through royalties and related income). Originality and creativity are two integral parts in the production of music. An artiste is expected to bring forth his music from within whilst getting a message across or making people dance and as such, he is to be rewarded for his creativity.

Après le succès de la tournée africaine de 2018, parcourant les villes de Johannesburg, Lagos, Abidjan, et Brazzaville, le Midem retourne en Afrique pour la deuxième édition du programme qui met à l’honneur le continent africain et son extraordinaire potentiel musical. Maleek Berry, phénomène de l’Afrobeat, artiste, producteur et fondateur de son propre label Berry’s Room (Nigéria), sera cette année l’ambassadeur de l’African Forum. Malgré l’influence considérable du continent africain sur les genres musicaux du monde entier, la plupart des pays d’Afrique n’ont pas encore une place au niveau de leur potentiel dans l’industrie internationale de la musique, représentant au total moins de 2% du marché musical mondial. Cependant, la situation change : les technologies digitales permettent désormais aux artistes, aux labels, et aux industries musicales associées d’atteindre un nombre croissant de consommateurs sur tout le continent, tout en facilitant l’exportation d’artistes locaux. De par leur diversité et leur richesse culturelle, les marchés africains recèlent un potentiel énorme – mais il leur reste de multiples défis à relever.
