s someone who loves fashion, you probably wouldn’t ever be able to tell by how I dress. On most days of the week you can find me in one of two variations of black jeans with some sort of hoodie on, and depending on if I woke up Alate, I’m probably rocking a hat. But if you knew me in my younger days of high school, you’d think I didn’t know a single thing about fashion. Before college, I rolled out of bed and wore whatever sweatpants I had on to school with moccasins and an old sports hoodie. That all changed when I got to college. I didn’t start wearing suits to class, mostly because I biked at first, but also a simple glance around campus would show you: we like to keep it casual. But even within those boundaries of keeping it casual, every day on campus I’d be inspired by someone’s fashion. Maybe it was someone rocking a fresh new pair of sneakers that I saw on Instagram the day before, or it was one of my classmates casually walking in wearing a Louis Vuitton belt. Other times it was little things like wanting to cuff my jeans “like that guy” or cut my damn hair because I looked like a scrub. I think the thing I noticed most through my days was how people were so free and able to express themselves through fashion. My high school fashion wasn’t just because I was lazy (okay it was mostly because I was lazy), it was also because the first day I wore Vans to school I was called “emo” and when I wore skinny jeans once, I was hit with, “Are those your sister’s?” In college, however, I nervously wore a cardigan to class only to be hit with compliments from classmates and total strangers. It was validating, and it felt incredible. From that moment, I wore what I wanted. My fashion Whether you’re spicing up your fashion, overhauling, or soul wouldn’t be dictated by blending in to avoid comments and searching, we all have to start somewhere. It took me 19 years to criticism, rather it was to wear what made me feel confident. realize sweats and moccasins in public are not acceptable so don’t And that’s the thing with fashion: it’s not a one-size fit all. feel like you’re too far behind. And if sweats and moccasins are your What I find stylish and fashionable might be a world away jam, ignore the haters because they’re just jealous they aren’t half from what you find stylish, but the important thing is that we as comfy as you. both wear what makes us comfortable. If you want to show off your muscles you worked so hard for in the gym, buy that Cheers, medium shirt even though you definitely need a large. And if showing skin makes you feel uncomfortable, the powers of a good cardigan are limitless. Trust me, I know from experience. Mitch Hooper Editor-in-Chief

Happy Women’s History Month, where you hear about bad ass women that you should’ve been hearing about all year long. Disappointed? Me too. It’s time to start recognizing women making history right now, so for this article the I interviewed women changing the world in large and small ways from the dot that is Ohio State.

CLAIRE CODER

We’ve all heard the successful college dropout stories Have you ever felt underestimated for your strength, of Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, and Mark Zuckerberg, but or like you’ve ever had to compensate to prove there’s another story that should be on that list, and it’s you’re as tough as the rest? You may be familiar with their Banner Up campaign where they hang banners on off-campus housing (specifically Greek life houses) to raise awareness about sexual assault during welcome week, when the epidemic is at its highest.

What work does AWOW do here on campus? Besides Banner Up, we have Flow-And-Glow, our yoga event. All proceeds go to Days for Girls, an organization dedicated to reusable menstrual hygiene kits. Girls miss an average of 2 months every year of school because of their menstrual cycles. Teachers will take advantage of the fact that girls miss school every month, so they’ll ask for favors so that women can get products. No one thinks about them especially in disaster areas; it’s a necessity but it’s the last thing people think of.

What is the biggest difference between national and international feminism? Feminism around the world has to be more intersectional. In the US, you’re able to have white-feminism that is very specifically focalized on a sector of society that already has a good amount of privilege. Talking about global feminism, you can’t separate any issue of oppression from feminism because women face the brunt of all the issues. Something we like to say in AWOW is, ”If there’s a problem, women have it worse.” Whatever problems refugees face, women refugees face that and more.

What’s the best way for women to support other women? My friends call me a spiritualist, so I believe that your life is a reflection of what you are on the inside. The best way for women to support other women is for us to look inside and deal with this internalized depression that we all have. I don’t think we realize how that colors our reactions with everyone else (internalized bias, internalized racism, internalized sexism). We think we’re cool, we’re woke, because we have a nice button on our backpack, but maybe a girl makes us feel insecure and we call her a hoe. Those little manifestations really hold us back, because we can’t move forward unless we understand what it is that’s holding us back. Little steps we can take might not make all the carbon in the atmosphere go away, but it sends a message that you’re telling yourself, I am a global citizen. • 1870mag.COM • March 2019 • 1870 MAGAZiNE 1870mag.COM • MARCH 2019 • 1870 MAGAZiNE 29

• A big lineup to look for is between TRISM’s blueberry almond butter smoothie bowl and the First Watch avocado toast. This may be the last season for the smoothie bowl, so I’m sure they will be going all out.

• Katalina’s pancake balls are a crowd favorite, but against the hardy skill of chicken AND waffles, that’s a show-down that could go either way.

• The Bloody Mary bar may seem like an underdog, but with Fox in the Snow’s main coffee contender out for the tournament, I’d say Standard Hall has a chance to win that one.

• Another match to look out for is between Dough Mama and Jack and Benny’s. Two true powerhouses and a promise for the matchup of the century.

prang Breaaaaaak! Everyone knows about college spring break. Even the movies mythologize it. When it comes to partying on Spring Break,S or just chilling on the beach, it’s all about being able to stay versatile for those moments you need to step in a bar to refuel as well as comfortable when sweating it out in the sun. This outfit is easy to put together, and it won’t require you to go on shopping spree so you can save your money for exploring (or alcohol).

SHIRT Here’A.s my one piece of advice: Don’t spend it in boring outfits. Get yourself a nice, light short-sleeve button-up with a print that’s a little, you know, out there. For example: Find one with pineapple floats on it. (Or any tropical fruit. Or maybe some flamingos. You get the idea). Unbutton those top two buttons and let your chest show, and let the good energy of Spring Break course through your veins (or wait, maybe that’s a couple daiquiris?). I got mine at TJ Maxx for $15.

SHORTS I’mB. going to impart something on everyone that I hope you already know and I learned way too late in my life: Showing off your thighs is great. And I’m not sure there’s a better pair of shorts in the world than the 7-inch shorts from American Eagle that come in every color. You won’t ever be a true captain of the thigh seas if you constantly hide the upper part of your leg.

SHOES Alright.C. I know boat shoes are a certified Frat Boy Move, but there’s a reason they work. They go with damn near anything, they’re comfy as hell, and are just as easy to slip on in the morning (afternoon?) with a hangover as they are to toss off before jumping in the pool. Mine are Kenneth Cole Unlisted boat shoes in navy.

How to spice up your denim

enim doesn’t need to be in the form of pants. Denim dresses are just as versatile as a pair of jeans! And why not spice up yourD denim with some of today’s trends?

A. DRESS I had been looking for the perfect denim dress for months when I finally saw the one *cue the confetti* in Topshop. Not only does the full zip-up closure give me a great silhouette, but a denim dress can literally be worn with any color or material jacket.

B. JACKET A classic leather jacket. Need I explain more? I prefer ones like this with lots of embellishments like zippers.

C. PURSE I’m a sucker for anything with animal print. Leopard and snakeskin are the two hottest prints right now, and when you have a solid colored outfit, a printed accessory becomes your statement piece! To make any outfit Insta-worthy, I always add a statement piece.

D. HAT All aboard! Just kidding, these train conductor looking hats are actually called cabbie or newsboy hats. I rocked one of these in 2005 and guess what...they’re back.

E. BOOTIES These shoes that I found at a thrift store were basically made for me, all the way down to the ankle cutouts that show off my airplane tattoo. This sleek, shiny material is called PVC, and it’s hot! The black makes these shoes super versatile, and the PVC adds a little more visually. A Warmer Days

They want to dismantle misconceptions about women who obsess over their posts, and advise people looking to take it more seriously to take caution. “I have to remember that the minute I stop enjoying Instagram, I shouldn’t do it anymore,” Veak reminds herself. “I still like going outside for no reason to take photos. For some, this is a full personalized regime that they swear by, Wand for others, they simply apply foundation, swipe on mascara and call it a day. Either way, makeup is an investment, both time and money, so why not do it right? And there’s no better way to learn than to get a makeover by a pro. Going out or going to class, I learned some tips and tricks from beauty Instagrammer Amanda Frederick to brighten up your look.

Primer: - Primer is a MUST. It hydrates your skin throughout the day and helps your makeup stay on longer.

Foundation: - Frederick uses demi-matte foundation because it gives you wetter look, without looking too dry and flat. - Protip: Nobody thinks to put foundation on your ears or in the corner of your eye, but these are spots that people often miss. Putting foundation here can make a huge difference. - If your foundation doesn’t match your skin tone perfectly, be sure to bring it down on your neck - Protip: Dab don’t drag.

Concealer: - Put concealer on problem areas and under the eye. - Protip: Spray concealer brush with setting spray first, it make the concealer blend into the skin easier, less cakey.

Contour: - Areas to hit: Under cheekbones, top corners of the forehead and outside of the bridge of the nose to slim your face and give it dimension.

Highlighter: - She loves and used highlighter because it brightens your face without having to cake it on. - Areas to hit: Tip of nose, apples of cheeks and middle of the forehead.

Eyeshadow: - If you don’t typically use dramatic eyeshadow shades, she recommends sticking to nudes, champagne and blush colors. - Get creative and blend different shades together such as purples and golds like this look here. - Protip: Always put a darker shades in the outer crease. - Protip: Put white setting powder under the eye before doing your eyeshadow because if eyeshadow gets on the skin it will ruin your makeup.

Setting spray is life: - Sets your makeup into your skin and instantly gives it a smoother look, plus you can get affordable versions that work great. - Protip: Fan it to dry before you do anything else.

Other: - She’s trying to go cruelty-free with her makeup and using up all the palettes she has that test on animals so she can fully transition to cruelty-free products. •

Bots, Brands, Bogosand Looking for some Supreme? OSU student and reseller Adam Demetriades can help

BY MITCH HOOPER PHOTOS BY COLLINS LAATSCH

“I think the draw is having something that other people can’t readily get, not because it’s expensive, but it’s elusive.” — Adam Demetriades.

hen talking to Demetriades about his Supreme collection, those words perfectly described the culture that surrounds it. In the age of the internet and Instagram, Wfinding your “brand of originality” is often linked to the clothes you wear and how you present yourself. And when it comes to Supreme, originality goes hand-in-hand with their “drop system” which releases a limited amount of clothes on Thursdays. If you weren’t in line at a Supreme store in New York, or one of the lucky ones to make it on the server without it crashing, the odds of you getting a simple yet iconic box logo t-shirt are slim to none creating a hype and craze around each weekly drop. However, that isn’t your only option. These “rare” pieces have stirred up a rather large resale market where a simple box logo t-shirt goes from $54 to upwards of $600. Yeah, $600. For a t-shirt. This is where Demetriades comes in. He’s been a Supreme collector for more than a year now, and he’s looking to connect with other resellers and collectors at Ohio State.

How deep are you into Supreme collecting? 1870mag.COM • MARCH 2019 • 1870 MAGAZiNE 0

How deep are you into Supreme collecting? Oh, I love accessories when I can get my hands on them. Usually I stick to the more “budget” accessories that are more trinket-related. Like for example, I snagged the work gloves and the industrial marker last season. I mostly stick to clothing, though.

How did all of this begin for you? It seems like Supreme came from the underground skating scene and now it’s everywhere. I actually had a good friend introduce it to me in the summer of ‘17 while we were in Germany of all places [laughs]. She had this super cool Supreme bag and I thought it was so clean. I looked into it and taught myself how to start buying and the rest is history … I personally like it because I do skate, and it’s one of those brands that is a status symbol but also looks really cool, is affordable at retail prices, and I love their designs and ideas. I’d say without a doubt that it has become exponentially more popular in recent years, and those who were in the know before had it so much better if you wanted to wear what you buy because of the increased difficulty of buying.

How have you managed that buying “rare” items process? Oh, I am not ashamed to admit I have a bot that assists me in buying. You practically need one to get anything cool these days. The drops are on a fixed schedule and you can find a “leak” list of this week’s drop items so you can plan ahead and pick what you want your bot to grab.

What’s been the hardest thing to not be able to get on a drop day? Any week that an item with the classic Supreme box logo drops, it’s a bloodbath. You’ll get site crashes, transaction errors, and forget about trying to go in without a bot. It sells out in literal seconds; under five usually. I still have yet to get one, and I usually don’t even bother because taking an L hurts a little inside.

What’s been your favorite pick up on drop day? My favorite cop would have to be my Akira long sleeve tee. I’m a huge fan of that movie and the shirt looks awesome. The reason I bot is that I want to pay retail prices for cool clothes instead of the resell price which can be marked up two to six times the retail price. I resell to make up for what I buy, and it’s a tidy system.

How far in the resell market do you go? I’ll usually either sell to some friends back home if they ask me to grab it for them. If there’s some hot item that people are hyping, I’ll stick to GRailed or StockX if I think it will sell well. I’m probably about 1:1 on my money spent/money made back on Supreme. I love rocking my personals [laughs].

So how much Supreme do you own? How long did it take you to get your collection this large? It’s honestly nothing too crazy. Like I have maybe 10 tees, a jacket, a bag, accessories, hella stickers, and probably some I’m forgetting…[It took me] maybe a year? It’s sort of addicting!

What are some giveaways for finding fake or knock off Supreme? Nothing apparent for most products since the logo is fairly simple. However, Supreme rarely makes generic items like lanyards, the biggest culprit, with the box logo on the front. Usually, you can look at the archives to see if the item exists and then from there you can check validity. It’s not an exact science as verifying true designer brands, but the level of knockoffs are making it that way.•
