11 Academic Recognition High academic achievement is recognized upon graduation in three ways: graduation with distinction, based upon grades only, graduation with honors in the major, based upon both grades and the completion of an honors project approved by the College and the major department, and graduation with University Honors, based on grades and completion of a formal curriculum of honors cousework and experiences.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Henry B. Tippie College of Business recognize high scholastic achievement by awarding degrees “with highest distinction,” “with high distinction,” and “with distinction,” based on grade point averages for graduates in the 2015 calendar year.

Highest distinction - highest 2 percent High distinction - next highest 3 percent Distinction - next highest 5 percent

To be eligible for graduation with distinction students must complete a minimum of 60 semester hours in residence at The University of Iowa, of which 45 semester hours must have been completed before the student’s final semester.

Stars worn on the left sleeve designate graduation with distinction: three stars indicate graduation with highest distinction; two, with high distinction; and one, with distinction.

Candidates graduating with honors in the major wear white cordons to mark their achievement. Candidates graduating with University Honors are recognized by a medal worn on a black and gold lanyard.

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a Business student can earn. To be eligible for membership, a student’s academic ranking must place him or her in the upper 10 percent of the junior class or in the upper 10 percent of the senior class. Students graduating from the Tippie College of Business as members of Beta Gamma Sigma wear blue and gold cordons to recognize their achievement.

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honor society for students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. To be electied to the society students must meet membership stipulations, including an academic ranking in the upper 10 percent of the senior class based on grade point average.
