In the last decade alone, the aerospace and defense (A&D) sector's total turnover quadrupled, while exports have increased fivefold, reaching $5.1 billion and $1.65 billion in 2014, respectively. The industry's investment in research and development (R&D) reached almost $1 billion in 2014. The total workforce in the A&D industry reached 30,000 personnel, of which 30% are engineers. Even more remarkable, Turkey is now at the stage of offering its own platforms for both the local market and to international allies, and has commenced a series of follow up local programs. Although this progress has been achieved under the circumstances of a healthy and consistent political environment and in parallel with sustained growth in the Turkish economy, the proportion of expenditure for defense in the national budget and as a percentage of Turkey’s GDP has been stable. With the help of the national, multinational and joint defense industry projects that have been undertaken in Turkey by the undersecretariat, the defense industry has become a highly capable community comprising large-scale main contractors, numerous sub- system manufacturers, small- and medium-sized enterprises, R&D companies who are involved in high-tech, niche areas, research institutes, and universities. -

These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Photo: Collection of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum GRUMMAN / EASTERNGRUMMAN AIRCRAFT AVENGER TBM-3E GRUMMAN/EASTERN AIRCRAFT TBM-3E AVENGER TORPEDO BOMBER First flown in 1941 and introduced operationally in June 1942, the Avenger became the U.S. Navy’s standard torpedo bomber throughout World War II, with more than 9,836 constructed. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. ABSTRACT On September 23, 1997, at the request of the House Committee on Ways and Means (Committee),1 the United States International Trade Commission (Commission) instituted investigation No. 332-384, The Changing Structure of the Global Large Civil Aircraft Industry and Market: Implications for the Competitiveness of the U.S. Industry, under section 332(g) of the Tariff Act of 1930, for the purpose of exploring recent developments in the global large civil aircraft (LCA) industry and market. As requested by the Committee, the Commission’s report on the investigation is similar in scope to the report submitted to the Senate Committee on Finance by the Commission in August 1993, initiated under section 332(g) of the Tariff Act of 1930 (USITC inv. No. 332-332, Global Competitiveness of U.S. Advanced-Technology Manufacturing Industries: Large Civil Aircraft, Publication 2667) and includes the following information: C A description of changes in the structure of the global LCA industry, including the Boeing-McDonnell Douglas merger, the restructuring of Airbus Industrie, the emergence of Russian producers, and the possibility of Asian parts suppliers forming consortia to manufacture complete airframes; C A description of developments in the global market for aircraft, including the emergence of regional jet aircraft and proposed jumbo jets, and issues involving Open Skies and free flight; C A description of the implementation and status of the 1992 U.S.-EU Large Civil Aircraft Agreement; C A description of other significant developments that affect the competitiveness of the U.S. LCA industry; and C An analysis of the aforementioned structural changes in the LCA industry and market to assess the impact of these changes on the competitiveness of the U.S. -

Since his departure, it has been maintained by Jeremiah Gertler of CRS. On September 27, 2018, the United States Air Force (USAF) awarded The Boeing Company a contract, worth up to $9.2 billion, to procure 351 Advanced Pilot Training (APT T-X) aircraft and 46 Ground-Based Training Systems (GBTS) to replace the existing fleet of T-38C jet trainers. The Air Force had originally valued the contract at roughly $19.7 billion. Information on the value of other competitors’ bids was not available. On September 16, 2019, Acting Secretary of the Air Force Matthew Donovan announced that in service, the T-X aircraft would be known as the T-7A Red Hawk. In this report, “APT T-X” will be used to identify the entire training system, while “T-7A” will refer to the aircraft portion of that system. The FY2020 Administration budget request included $348.473 million for the APT T-X. According to the USAF, the current T-38C trainer fleet is old, costly, and outdated, and lacks the technology to train future pilots for fifth-generation fighter and bomber operations. Based on Air Education Training Command’s evaluation of the required capabilities to train future pilots for fifth-generation fighters and bombers, the T-38C falls short in 12 of 18 capabilities, forcing the USAF to train for those capabilities in operational units where flying hours are costly and can affect fleet readiness. -

The Republic of Korea: a Defence and Security Primer
Today, the Republic of Korea (ROK) is a global economic and Primer Security and A Defence Korea: of The Republic industrial powerhouse and is identified as a world leader in ship- building, motor manufacturing and information technology. South Korea has also developed into a vibrant democracy. Despite all its successes the country remains locked in a deadly stand-off with its northern neighbour. Almost 60 years after the end of the Korean War, issues concerning defence and security remain of pri- mary societal and political importance in South Korea. This report attempts to summarise the ROK’s defence and security sectors. In four chapters the report addresses security policy and politics, defence reform, defence industry and R&D. Main findings in the report are that South Korea’s defence and security sector is in a period of general transition and change. Threat perceptions and the fragility of security on the Korean Peninsula have intensified over the past few years. Political reconsiderations of South Korea’s security and defence policies have raised contentions over the direction of its defence reform process, and how it will be implemented. South Korea’s defence industrial and R&D sector is actively seeking increased independence and profitability. It is however limited in how it can pursue these structural changes.
