    Indian Journal ofHistory ofScience, 42.4 (2007) 559-574 PATTERN FORMATION IN WOOTZ DAMASCUS STEEL SWORDS AND BLADES JOHN V ERHOEVEN* (Received 14 February 2007) Museum quality wootz Damascus Steel blades are famous for their beautiful surface patterns that are produced in the blades during the forging process of the wootz ingot. At an International meeting on wootz Damascus steel held in New York' in 1985 it was agreed by the experts attending that the art of making these blades had been lost sometime in nineteenth century or before. Shortly after this time the author began a collaborative study with bladesmith Alfred Pendray to tty to discover how to make ingots that could be forged into blades that would match both the surface patterns and the internal carbide banded microstructure of wootz Damascus steels. After carrying out extensive experiments over a period ofaround 10 years this work succeeded to the point where Pendray is now able to consistently make replicas of museum quality wootz Damascus blades that match both surface and internal structures. It was not until near the end of the study that the key factor in the formation of the surface pattern was discovered. It turned out to be the inclusion of vanadium impurities in the steel at amazingly low levels, as low as 0.004% by weight. This paper reviews the development of the collaborative research effort along with our analysis ofhow the low level of vanadium produces the surface patterns.     THE ORIGINS OF IRON AND STEEL MAKING IN THE SOUTHERN INDIAN SUBCONTINENT 1 The significance of wootz steel to the history of materials science Sharada Srinivasan and S Ranganathan Introduction The melting of steel proved to be a challenge in antiquity on account of the high melting point of iron. In the 1740s Benjamin Huntsman successfully developed a technique of producing steel that allowed it to be made on a much larger commercial scale and was credited with the discovery of crucible steel. However, Cyril Stanley Smith brought to wider attention an older tradition of crucible steel from India, i.e. wootz or Damascus steel, which he hailed as one of the four metallurgical achievements of antiquity. Known by its anglicized name, wootz from India has attracted world attention. Not so well known is the fact that the modern edifice of metallurgy and materials science was built on European efforts to unravel the mystery of this steel over the past three centuries. Wootz steel was highly prized across several regions of the world over nearly two millennia and one typical product made of this Indian steel came to be known as the Damascus swords. Figure 1 shows a splendid example of the sword of Tipu Sultan. Wootz steel as an advanced material dominated several landscapes: the geographic, spanning Asia, Europe and the Americas; the historic, stretching over two millennia as maps of nations were redrawn and kingdoms rose and fell; and the literary landscape, as celebrated in myths, legends, poetry, drama, movies and plays in western and eastern languages including Sanskrit, Arabic, Urdu, Japanese, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

    Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

South Yemen united with North Yemen to form one country. Were more people in the south going to emulate the northerners and buy jambiyas once again? Having not been in the southern region since 1993, we surveyed five main southern towns in early 2008 to see if influences from the north had encouraged the southerners to wear jambiyas in recent years. In many ways the southerners are emulating the northerners: they have shed Marxism in favour of capitalism and there has been an increase in traditional Islamic practices, but they still look down on jambiyas. However, the dagger is still a proud sign of being a northern tribesman, and Sanaa remains the centre of the jambiya industry - with rhino horn most favoured for handles; Taiz trails a distant second in importance. We learned more about the attitudes of Yemenis, especially from the younger more prosperous men in Sanaa who are likely to buy a rhino horn jambiya. And we increased public awareness on the plight of the rhino, distributing DVDs on Yemen’s rhino horn trade and supplying other educational materials to Yemenis in Sanaa and Taiz. Dr. Arnaldo 455 São Paulo - SP 01246-903 Brazil e-mail: coutinho @dim.fm.usp.br Introduction : Very often the collector of Japanese swords becomes interested in both Japanese armor and Japanese matchlocks ( teppo or tanegashima ). Not surprisingly, however, the books that deal with swords generally deal very superficially with teppo: the little information provided on the history of teppo may not answer all the questions which may arise. In fact, most books mention only that the teppo were introduced in Japan by the Portuguese in 1543. Sometimes it is mentioned that this happened in Tanegashima , a small island in the south of Japan. Occasionally, some authors add a little more to the story; for example, I. Bottomley and A.P. Hobson ( Bottomley (1996) page 124) write that “the Lord of Tanegashima bought two teppo… for an exorbitant sum”. He asked his swordsmith to copy the guns. There were some technical problems which the swordsmith finally resolved “by exchanging his daughter for lessons with another Portuguese who arrived a short time after.” Also according to Hawley ( Hawley (1977 ) page 94), the governor of the Island tried to buy a gun: “…making all sorts of offers which the trader continued to refuse. Finally the governor, perhaps to soften him up, put on a big going-away feast complete with music, drinks and geisha . At this feast the trader got a glimpse of the governor´s daughter who was an outstanding beauty.
