Jeremy Raymond Watson th 8 Grade AP

Introducing our new 8th grade Assistant Principle Jeremy Raymond‐ Watson. Although, Mr. Watson has a new position he is not new to the campus. He Started working at Lamar in 2009 as a teacher’s assistant. Enjoying working in the school system he went back to school to become a certified teacher. While working as a teacher, Mr. Watson wanted to further his career even more , pursuing a master’s degree to become a principal.

A Conversation with Mr. Raymond‐ Watson

Tell us about a teacher or class that had a big impact on you when you were in middle school

My favorite classes in middle school were World Cultures, Art, and football/athletics. I have always been interested in traveling and learning about different cultures; studying and practicing drawing and painting techniques; in Art class; and competing with my peer group weight lifting, running, and other physical activities in athletics

What is something unique about your teaching style?

When I taught, I liked to figure out as many real life applications for lessons as possible. This gives students with perspective about the topic we would be studying.

What do you like best about working at Lamar? It is a 50:50 mix between the students and staff. The staff are really like a second family. I have made friends, learned from my mentors, and gained valuable experience working alongside excellent veteran educators. The students are all great kids full of personality and spunk. They are the future, so I give my all to prepare them for it. What was the most exciting thing that happened to you this summer?

I paid my car off! Other than that, I hung around Austin all summer, going to many trainings and workshops to prepare me for my new role in the new school year.

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekends?

I like to watch sports, read, listen to records, go to the movies, and sleep in when I can.

Newsletter is emailed to the email address of the primary parent. All current and past newsletters can also be accessed on Lamar's website: lamarmiddleschool.org

DesTination ImaginAtion (DI) Ms. Wagner (Rm 210) Who? Students who enjoy fine arts and science are encouraged to apply. In order to apply you must be available to meet every week (reference “When and Where does DI Meet?”). Why should I join DI? Destination Imagination nurtures creativity, problem solving, and teamwork. Students in DI make friends, grow in confidence, and have fun. What is DI? Students will have an opportunity to compete at the regional, and if they advance, the state and global level. At competition, students will be asked to present solutions to a myriad of challenges. Solutions to Central Challenges will be presented in the form of a theatrical production, where the students design the skit, music, dance, costumes, props, etc. Examples of this year’s Central Challenges:  Technical: “Design and build a device to navigate a tournament-provided maze, a prop that transforms in the maze, and a mechanism for removing an object from the maze. Create and present a story about a journey through this maze.” – Destination Imagination  Scientific: “Explore the scientific concepts used in amusement park attractions in order to design and build an attraction that uses scientific concepts during its operation. Create and present a story that features the attraction operating in an unlikely location brought to life using sights and sounds.”–Destination Imagination  Engineering: “Design, build, and test a freestanding structure that can withstand impacts from dropped weights. Tell a story about a sudden event with dramatic impact and use a visible or audible depiction to illustrate the story’s sudden event.”–Destination Imagination  Fine Arts: “Create and present a musical that includes a change in plans. Incorporate a spectacle and a set change into the musical.” –Destination Imagination Examples of 7 minute Instant Challenges include:  Build the tallest standing structure using a yard of tape, string, and dry spaghetti noodles.  A new disease has emerged in your town. What is the name of that disease, what are three symptoms, and what is the cure? Design a skit to explain what happens. When and Where Does DI Meet? Each team will meet every Tuesday, Thursday, OR Friday from 4:00-5:30pm at a teammate’s house. The determined meeting day will be established such that it accommodates all accepted applicants. Meetings at a teammate’s house must be supervised by at least two adults and can only take place outside the set Tuesday/Thursday/Friday schedule if the whole team agrees on an alternative meeting day/time. Each team is only obligated to meet with Ms. Wagner once a month on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday from 3:40-5:00pm. The meeting with Ms. Wagner can be in place of or in addition to the team’s weekly meetings at a teammate’s house. Students who consistently fail to attend weekly meetings will lose their position on the team. When and how can I join? Applications for Destination Imagination will be sent out through science classes next week. Even if you are a returning applicant you must reapply. Your acceptance onto a team will be determined based on your apparent interest in Destination Imagination and quantitative input from Lamar Staff. All Applications are due by Friday, September 8th to Ms. Wagner in Room 210. Students selected for DI will receive an acceptance letter by Wednesday, September 13th. Only fourteen applicants will be selected. DO WHAT MOVES YOU
