Golf, the Flag, and the 1917 Western Amateur By Stephen R. Lowe Within hours of the horrifying events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, President Bush told the nation that it had just entered its first war of the new century. For days afterward, little else seemed to matter. Our sports-crazed nation approved the cancellation of professional team schedules through the following weekend. The PGA Tour cancelled its event as well, and the long-anticipated Ryder Cup matches, where the European squad looked to settle their Brookline beef at the Belfry, became another quick casualty. Those early cancellations of sports events were easy calls. The following week, though, baseball, football, golf, and everything else American began again, if sometimes awkwardly. The role of sports in times so serious as war has always been tricky. When is it okay to play? As Americans fight the first war of a new century, golf fans may find some helpful perspective in the first war of the last one.

Cog Hill Hosts Western Open for the 15Th Year
COG HILL HOSTS WESTERN OPEN FOR THE 15TH YEAR Cog Hill Golf & Country Club, located in Lemont, Illinois will again host this year’s Western Open, the PGA Tour’s oldest championship, on June 27-July 3. The prestigious tournament has been held at Cog Hill since 1991, and this year marks the 15th anniversary of its return to Cog Hill. The Western Open made its debut in 1899 at the Glen View Club in Golf, Illinois and since 1930 has benefited the Evans Scholars Foundation of the Western Golf Association. Named for Chick Evans, the Foundation has sent more than 7,400 caddies through college and has well over 800 caddies currently in college. Nestled in the Des Plaines River Valley, Cog Hill Golf & Country Club has been attracting local and visiting golfers to the area since 1927. This privately-owned golf complex is located in a lovely rural setting less than 30 miles southwest of Chicago. The public is invited to play on one of four 18-hole regulation golf courses, including the world-famous Course No. 4, "DUBSDREAD." The complex also includes a driving range/learning center, a golf shop, a restaurant and patio, along with a 280-seat banquet hall located within the historic clubhouse. The setting is ideal for weddings, business meetings, or other special events. THE COURSES Unique layouts and well-conditioned courses have enticed local and visiting golfers to Cog Hill for well over 70 years. With four regulation courses, Cog Hill tests players at all levels. Courses No. 1 and No. 3 tend to be wooded and gently rolling with mostly elevated greens.

Trenham 1960 to 1969 1960 Al Besselink won the Section Championship and Skee Riegel won the Philadelphia Open. 1961 Gary Player won the Masters Tournament playing out of the Langhorne Country Club. 1962 Forty-four year old Henry Williams, Jr. won the Jamaica Open and Aronimink GC hosted the PGA Championship. 1963 The PGA Tour returned to the Section and played for the largest purse in the history of the PGA Tour. 1964 Art Wall won at San Diego, Al Besselink won the Azalea Open and Mike Souchak won at Houston and Memphis. 1965 Al Besselink won two Caracas Opens and Art Wall won his 4th Section Championship and the Maracaibo Open. 1966 Bert Yancey won at Wilmington, Memphis and Portland. 1967 Bob Ross won the Section Championship, the Pennsylvania Open and the DeBaufre Trophy. 1968 The Section rented office space. Leo Fraser elected PGA president. Bert Yancey 3rd in the Masters & U.S. Open 1969 Al Besselink won the Section Championship and the Prior Golf Festival. 1960 When the New Year began the Philadelphia Section had a new member on the PGA Tour. Jon Gustin was playing out of the Philadelphia Country Club. The Country Club’s professional Loma Frakes and two of the mem- bers backed him on the tour financially for four years. His ball striking abil- ity was legendary. He was one of the few players that Ben Hogan would pause to watch hit balls on the practice tee. While serving in the marines Gustin was in President Eisenhower’s Color Guard at the White House.
