Finnish Law Offices Follow Their Clients � � Published:�2003�12�17� Author:�Ieva�Dambe Finnish law offices follow their clients Published: 2003-12-17 Author: Ieva Dambe In Latvia currently there are two major law offices operating in cooperation with Finnish partners, though within slightly different frameworks, -- Liepa, SkopiĦa / BORENIUS and Sorainen Law Offices. The legal business world is dominated by the trend to follow the clients. This trend serves as the basis for the expansion policy of law firms. Therefore major companies upon entering Latvia are bringing along the law firms servicing them. As concluded by Db, currently the closest ties with foreign partners are practised by Sorainen Law Offices. "The firm was founded by Finns in 1997 to expand the legal service area," explains Ăirts Rūda, attorney-at-law cooperating with Sorainen Law Offices. According to Mr. Liepa, the key to success lies in the fact that the parties are independent full- fledged partners with their relationship based on the principle of horizontality and equality. Cooperation to be expanded The forthcoming objectives of the group of BORENIUS attorneys’ offices include strengthening the cooperation with Lithuania, which, though already being a cooperation partner, has, nevertheless, not yet been included in the group of law firms. "The offices” unified by the brand name BORENIUS and the associative ties, operate in line with the cooperation agreement wherein the partners have laid down the cooperation strategy," says Mr. L. Liepa. A distinctive feature compared with other cooperation partners of the office lies in the fact that the BORENIUS associated offices would never represent clients with mutually opposed interests, since the association is to remain prioritised. "Upon further development of the Latvian legal system and with Latvia adopting the EU regulation for the free professions, we may clearly become a network of law firms similar to, for instance, that of Baker McKenzie from the USA," predicts Mr. L. This work was acquired for the collection of the Finnish Art Society at the Art Museum of the Ateneum in Helsinki,2 following discussion involving the London-based Finnish art historian Tancred Borenius and the Finnish professor of aesthetics and literature Yrjö Hirn. Copies of the letters between Borenius and Hirn held in the archive collections of the Finnish National Gallery show the extent to which Fry influenced this particular acquisition. Borenius refers to Fry’s direct involvement in the selection of acquisitions, recommends Fry to Hirn as one of Europe’s foremost connoisseurs and, finally, mentions the fact that Fry promised to publish a written appraisal of the acquisition in The Burlington Magazine, thus validating the quality and value of the painting in the eyes of the public. With increasing infrastructure and affluence in the first half of the 20th century, travel and international communications became more viable for artists, critics, scholars and collectors alike in Europe. Despite two wars against the Soviet Union (1939-1940 and 1941-1944), and the threat of communist takeover, Finland survived as an independent, democratic country with a market economy. When the Cold War started in the late 1940s, the United States government and the British Foreign Office began to view trade as a potential means of drawing Finland closer to the West and preventing it from falling under Soviet domination. The extensive evidence of this has led many historians to underline the role of political considerations in Western foreign economic policy towards Finland. The present work argues that the Cold War rhetoric of the British Foreign Office paints a misleading picture of British government policy.
