THE CHURCH OF ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE VOCATION SUNDAY

When I was in seminary there were in between 10 and 15 other Website: www.stmaxkolbechurch.org guys also in seminary from my home parish! (There were also General Email: [email protected] another 10 ladies discerning the convent!) In fact, the weekend I Parish Office Phone: 763-972-2077 went home to say my first Mass of Thanksgiving at the parish Pastor: Fr. Kyle Kowalczyk, ext. 222 that nurtured my faith and vocation there were two other [email protected] brothers doing the same thing! So, no matter which Mass one Deacon: Rev. Mr. Joseph Kittok, 763-221-6658 went to they got a new priest saying his first Mass. One of the [email protected] others was my childhood classmate and lifelong friend. So of Deacon: Rev. Mr. Bruce Bowen, 612-298-4867 course he had to concelebrate my Mass and I his. You might be [email protected] thinking that I grew up at a rather large parish. And you would Office & Liturgical Administrator: Catherine Taylor, be absolutely wrong. My home parish is smaller than St. Max. So, ext. 221 [email protected] what’s the difference? Well, first let me tell you what is similar. Business Administrator: Jill Ellingson, ext. 223

They have had Perpetual Adoration for probably 20 years. They [email protected] have had a very holy pastor there since I was a kid. And they Bookkeeper: Marie Bauman, ext. 226 have families who encourage their sons and daughters to think [email protected] about a vocation. In fact, there is something that happens when Director of Music: Alexa Vavra a number of guys are in the seminary at the same time from the [email protected] same parish… it takes all the pressure off. Being in seminary is Director of Parish & Family Life: Eric Russek, ext. 251 no big deal. It’s just something that boys do to discern what God [email protected] might be calling them to. Most of those guys did not get Safe Environment Coordinator: Eric Russek, ext. 251 ordained priests, but it also wasn’t a big deal when they left Marriage Preparation & Funeral Coordinator: seminary. Everyone just said the same thing, “Good for you for Kathy Carlson, ext. 246, checking it out.” [email protected]

No, we don’t have Perpetual Adoration, but we are working Bulletin Editor: Kristin Detloff, 971-280-9676, towards it. No, we haven’t had a priest here for a long time, but [email protected] we have had good and holy priests. What about our families? Cemetery Liaison : Jane Speckel, 763-442-1779 [email protected] Are moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas actively encouraging their children to consider a religious call from the Parish Trustees: Jason Winter and Gary Schaust Lord? Miscarriage Ministry: Bobi Meehan, 763-479-2604 Adoration Coordinator: Barb Janas, 763-972-6843 Moment of truth: when was the last time you said to your son, “I think you’d be a good priest”. Or when was the last time you ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CATHOLIC SCHOOL asked your daughter, “Have you ever considered becoming a Website: www.stmaxkolbeschool.org religious sister?” I’m guessing that most of you are thinking to School Phone: 763-972-2528 yourself right now… “never”. School Principal: Mary Ziebell, ext. 228 In my experience, the biggest deterrent of religious vocations is [email protected] parents (and grandparents by extension). I have known some School Secretary: Sandi Jucha, ext. 229 who have explicitly prayed, “Lord, give us more priests, but not [email protected] from among my kids,” and who have deliberately stood in the way of or discouraged any possibility of their kids following the

Lord on such a path. But more often than not it is a more passive deterrent, that is, they simply don’t mention it all. They St. Maximilian Kolbe Councils never point the priest out to their 4 year old and say, “Maybe Pastoral Council God will call you to do that.” They never bring their daughters to a place where a nun is to be found and say, “Aren’t they so B.J. Ludwig, Chairperson, [email protected] beautiful and joyful. You would look beautiful in that habit too.” Susan Fobbe, Secretary Or they simply don’t pray for their children's’ vocations at all! Tim Burke, Susan Robinson, Heather Triplett, Connie Botz I think we have to ask ourselves this question: What do we want for our kids? Happiness, right? And what will make them Please contact B.J. Ludwig of the Pastoral Council with concerns or happier than doing exactly what God is calling them to do? comments about the parish. Concerns and ideas will be discussed Nothing! I’m rather convinced that it was my grandmother’s with Fr. Kowalczyk at the monthly Council meeting. prayers that landed both me and my cousin in the seminary. And Finance Council I’m fairly certain that her prayers saw us both to the priesthood Jeff Carriveau, Kelly Horn, as well. The prayers and encouragement of a parent, John Reuter, Bill Bandzuch , Brian Marketon grandparent or an aunt or an uncle can be the difference maker. To learn more about our financial health, please contact There is no reason why our parish shouldn’t always have at least Jill Ellingson, our Parish Business Administrator. To reach her one man discerning in the seminary and one woman discerning directly, please call 763-972-2077 ext 223 or email her at in the convent! If not 10 or 15! - Fr. Kowalczyk [email protected]

Archdiocesan Synod www.archspm.org/synod

THE SYNOD IS BACK!

Many of you will remember praying during Mass for the Synod which is back in action after a pause during the pandemic. Archbishop Hebda has called this assembly to help him establish clear pastoral priorities, leading our Archdiocese and local parishes into the future. He has already had over 8,000 members of our Archdiocese attend prayer and listening sessions which have produced three focus areas to be discussed in small groups in every parish in the Archdiocese.

The focus areas are as follows: 1. Forming parishes that are in the service of evangelization 2. Forming disciples who know Jesus’s love and respond to His call. 3. Forming youth and young adults in and for a Church that is always young.

All St. Max parishioners are invited to join small groups which will begin meeting at the end of September. As a parish will have the opportunity to discuss the focus areas and provide feedback to Archbishop Hebda. This is an exciting opportunity “promote greater unity and lead us to a more vigorous proclamation of Jesus’s good news.”
