Matthew 28:19 Clergy Corner Dear St. Joseph Basilica Family, Thank you very, very much for last weekend’s outpouring of love for the remembrance of my birthday and anniversary of ordination. I hope that every priest in the diocese gets to experience what I experienced. Truly, it was a reflection of God, His generosity and the delight He takes in being with us, and celebrating with us. It is totally cliché to say this, but I mean it, your presence in my life is the great present of Priesthood. Please know that I thank God for you in my daily prayers. As I said at the end of Mass, never underestimate your prayers for your priests. They are so needed and so welcome. What’s more, never underestimate your prayers and your acts of love and mercy toward all of the people you encounter. That is because where there is love, there is God. “God is love,” (1 John 4:16), and so where we infuse love into the world, we are participating in the life of God. We cannot underestimate that. This is what we celebrate this weekend, Trinity Sunday. God is love because God is a community of persons that give to each other totally. God is not turned in on Himself, selfish, egotistical, isolated, but always looking outward to the other, to share what is best. That is what love is. And being made in the image and likeness of God, the Trinity, neither are we are meant to be turned in on ourselves; we are meant to look outward at each other, as you did for me this past weekend. When we do this, the image of God within us comes to maturity. Trinity Sunday is often referred to as “the preacher’s nightmare,” but I’ve never seen it that way. The Trinity is not some superfluous feast we celebrate once a year. Every Mass in a sense is Trinity Sunday since it begins with a recognition of the Trinity as we sign ourselves with the sign of the Cross and invoke the Name of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We remind ourselves with that sign that we are made in God’s image and are sent to be God’s presence in the world to those who do not know love. This takes intentional and persistent practice. Like an athlete, a musician, or any professional, you must practice how to love so as to bring the image of God within you to maturity and awaken with others the knowledge that they are loved, that their dignity and worth comes from God. Do works of mercy, come to the basilica and spend time in silence before the Blessed Sacrament, read Scripture. The world is depending on us. We have seen so much discord in the world lately; racial violence on our streets, immigration crises at our border, full-out military assaults in our world. What is the answer? Legislation? Yes. But at all times legislation must be accompanied by divine love, the love of the Trinity. We may change structures, and curriculum, and institutions, but if the individual is not touched by God’s love, all this work will be in vain. God is love, which means if there is going to be peace, if life is going to have meaning, then we must all be in- tune with God who loves us. We must never tire of asking God to reveal his love to us, to increase His love within us, and then help us to give that love away. Take some time today, and each time you sign yourself with the Cross, to remember that you are God’s, that the Most Holy Trinity loves you with an infinite love, and that He has given you the task of making others aware of this great love.
