Somehow, three divine persons add up to one God. But today’s readings from sacred scripture cut to the heart of the matter. The doctrine of the Trinity is our way of understanding the truth that we live every day as Christians: that God the Father has saved us through his Son Jesus Christ and made us into one people, united in the Holy Spirit. It is the experience of this salvation that is at the root of our knowledge of God as Trinity. Of course, the Trinity is not simply a scheme that we come up with as a way of talking about our experience of salvation. It is also, we believe, how God really is. God is, from all eternity, a communion of love shared among Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is because God includes us in this eternal love through becoming one of us in Jesus that we have eternal life. Our salvation is nothing less than our inclusion in the love that is the Holy Trinity. This is one reason why St. Paul exhorts the Corinthians to “encourage one another, agree with one another, and live in peace.” It is through actions such as these that our lives mirror the communion of love that is the Trinity. So the Trinity is what must be true of God. If our experience of salvation is true: through the grace of Jess we become partakers of the love of God in the communion that the Holy Spirit establishes among us and between us and God. The doctrine of the Trinity might be thought of as the affirmation that who God shows himself to be in the story of salvation is who God truly is in eternity. Questions to mediate upon during the week: 1. How do I relate to the image of God as Father? What role does this image play in my prayer life? 2. How do the life and example of Jesus direct and shape my understanding of God and my life as a Christian? 3. Where do I see the Holy Spirit at work in the world around me? God bless you in His abundance!
