……………………………………………………………………………...... FROM the RECTORY In our society which has lost a lot of those traditions which Dear Friends made connections between people and held communities together, it It seems to be hedge cutting season, though some sections is good to see that they are not totally gone. Even the simple smile were done earlier in the autumn. Spare a thought for the drivers who, or wave or word (like 'hello' and 'thank you' or our famous British with approaching cars, have to drive to a passing place and then comments on the weather) go a long way to make connections and back to the hedge they are cutting. Maybe some don't, but so far so build up communities. they have been kind to me! I treat it as a courtesy (though it is I hope you are one of those who does that, and who responds probably a legal requirement not to block the highway) and so I to others who do. acknowledge the tractor driver with my headlights or indicators and a Yours with a smile, Keith Hodson wave. A new person to one of our villages has been surprised at PRAYER OF THE MONTH (from the hymn Now thank we all our God) how often people wave from their cars, or speak when passing though they are 'strangers'. It is not what they have been used to in O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, the busy town they used to live in, where everyone ''keeps with ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us; themselves to themselves'' and there is little 'eye contact'. I find and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed some odd looks from strangers in Albrighton and Shifnal when I and free us from all ills in this world and the next. Amen smile at them, forgetting that I am not in our smaller communities here where 'connection' is the norm and the tradition. Along the main road to Shifnal two women walking their dogs ST. MARY’S, SUTTON MADDOCK CHURCH stopped when they saw the cortege coming, and one of them Visitors often comment on how beautiful the church is; how welcoming 'crossed herself', making the sign of the cross. It has been a long and peaceful they find it; how clean it is kept, likewise the churchyard. time since I have seen that done by strangers, which is partly to do We are very privileged to have such a lovely Parish Church so easily with my not travelling with the hearse. Years ago people would stop accessible. as a cortege went by, and men would bow their heads or if wearing hats take them off . As a child I can remember my mother drawing Over the years many people have given of their time freely to help with the front room curtains when there was a funeral from our row of the upkeep of the church, and indeed we are very grateful for all the houses. I think this was common practice across the country as a maintenance work done in more recent years by Ed Butlin and his staff sign of sympathy and respect. ....but the team of cleaners is currently down to three, so if you could This month has Remembrance Sunday on 9th November with spare an hour a month please get in touch with Jacky Butlin four services across our six parishes.
