On August 29th, 2009 we met up in Tieton at Wade Kabrich 's house. We added another load to the fi rst hole. After getting loaded again we drove We hooked up the Forest Service trailer and headed to Rimrock's Trail up the trail to the bad area of the trail. 4W608.

At the 4W608 trail head near FS1200 the Forest Service had brought in some rock last year for volunteers to use for the mud holes on the trail. The idea is to put bottoms on the deep mud holes on 4W608. Since the holes are getting too deep to drive through the trail has been getting wider and by-passes are being made. It is sad this trail may be closed because of all the damage users are continuing to do.

We stopped to see where we where going to turn this big truck around to dump.

We volunteered a day a year ago to help keep this trail open. We added many loads of rock to the fi rst sets of holes. On Saturday we volunteered to help another day on 4W608. The rock we added the year before was buried from people making the mud holes wider just to throw mud. The rock seemed to work where the holes did not get any deeper.

Wow. We were real shocked to see what was mud hole after mud hole, turned into one big mud bog. This is 10 times as bad as it was a year ago.

Guido loaded the fi rst loads of rock.

Moving up the trail. We skipped over some holes to start on the real bad part.

Using Jason Zeller's modifi ed F250 to pull the Forest Service trailer, we were off to add more rock to the fi rst mud hole. Continued on page 9

The volunteers worked on moving rocks to get the trailer in.

There was a wide by-pass so Jason Zeller was able to get the truck and trailer turned around.

The next two pictures will show how deep the hole was.

Attending: Vern with John in 94 YJ Ken with Luva, Troy, Becca, & Kylie in a 76 T. Cruiser Chuck with Rachel and Jake in 91 YJ Dave with Gloria in his 97 TJ Tommy with Dakota in a 75 T. Cruiser

This run is put on by the Cascade Cruisers out of Portland. A Toyota club, they had a special day on Friday for a Toyota only run then opened it up to anyone on Saturday. There were at least 72 participants. They did an excellent job marking routes and running the events at the checkpoint. They were even friendly to us JP types.

We left town at noon, one, and four in three groups then joined up at Brown’s Camp in the Tillamook forest. By the time we arrived Friday afternoon, camp was full so we “got” to camp in the overfl ow area in the gravel pit – i.e. lots of rocks, no restrooms, and no open fi res allowed. Got camp set up in daylight but all ate dinner, such as it was, in the dark. John and Vern used a propane torch to cook a couple of dogs – not worth doing a second time. Oh well, it’s an adventure!

Up early but delayed breakfast until after the 7 a.m. driver briefi ng we went to and stood around for that got delayed until 7:30, which got delayed/cancelled again until the offi cial 8 a.m. start time! Hustled back to camp to fi nish getting ready and grab whatever food was handy then hustled back over to get in line for the staggered start. Excitement built since we were fi nally about to go. Excitement dwindled as we waited about 30 more minutes in line!

Finally all 72 participants were out and running. We headed fi rst to Cedar Creek Trail. It was scenic on a beautiful sunny morning on an easy trail. About an hour into the day, Tommy’s Cruiser lost spark and after an hour of working on it he accepted an offer to tow it back by #72. This car was headed back because of nauseous car-sick kids. The rest of the group then raced to get to the fi rst checkpoint before it closed. We made it but were the last ones through!

We got our poker card then drove our passenger-side up the length of, and balancing on, a ten foot long log. Bonus points were given if it was done with driver’s eyes closed. Vern took the challenge successfully with John yelling instructions. The fi rst instruction was to stop rolling backwards before colliding with Ken’s Cruiser! Note: It is very disorienting to drive with no visual references.

We got new directions to the next trail and after Cedar Creek we hit Fire Break Five and Saddle Up trails; nothing technical. Got another poker card at the next check point, threw darts at a revolving wheel for a prize, and got the next set of trail directions.

We bypassed Airplane Hill mostly because of its reputation and the rock-garden gate-keeper. We will come back to do it on our own when there won’t be others pushing us through. It appears doable by our low-riders if done with care and not being afraid to winch or take a little damage. We looked at 7-Up (triple diamonds) briefl y before bypassing it as well. Since many of the big-boys with built rigs were unable to make it we chose discretion instead of glory. We will put that on our “maybe” list to try.

We opted to run up a short steep hill called Hogs Back on the way to the next checkpoint. The trail has two rock ledges to navigate at the top that force a vehicle to the right with an immediate sharp left turn putting the driver-side facing a bit downhill. First three of us went through and enjoyed the challenge but the traction was good so no major issues. Halfway up Ken (76 Cruiser) realized someone had sneakily turned his hubs and he wasn’t in 4WD – oops.

Got that fi xed, so up the steep hill he came. He got in trouble on the rock ledges and when he made his driver-side turn past the fi rst ledge his rig reared up on its rear tires at least three feet in the air and started tipping to the downhill. At one point I believe he may have had only one rear tire touching ground. He got it under control and gunned it the last couple of feet up and over the top.

His wife, Luva, in the passenger seat had chosen this day to be her fi rst day trail riding with Ken – ever. At the peak of the rigs lift, and only a few feet away from us on the top of the hill, we could see the big eyes, pale face, and hand over her mouth holding in a scream. It was at least an hour before she stopped shaking. Although we all made fun later – at the time it was extremely scary and was very close to disastrous.

Onward to Archers Fire Break and then Rocky Uphill picking up another poker card on the way. The game at the checkpoint was to toss heavy tow hooks, from the driver’s side seat, into 5 gallon buckets. Although not steep, Rocky Uphill had a challenge involving rock ledges at the top. The host club had a vehicle stationed at the top for winching people through but we all made it without assistance or breakage. Luva walked.

Back to our starting point and one last card and game. We had to try to back-up placing our rear diff inside of a hoola hoop – a challenge. After turning in our score cards most of us had to head out on our four-hour return trip home so didn’t stick around for awards or prizes. All in all it was a good day off-road, no breakage, good company, and beautiful sunny fall weather.

Good event, Thanks for hosting it Cruisers!

Life is Good! ~

7th Annual “Pick Up the Burn” A Huge Success September 26, 2009 Yacolt Burn State Forest On Saturday, September 26th, off-road vehicle enthusiasts gathered at the Jones Creek Trailhead to tackle a huge job – removing tons of garbage from the Yacolt Burn State Forest. Organized by the Piston’s Wild Motorsports Club and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, 112 registered volunteers logged a total of 869 hours hauling garbage from the forest. At the end of the afternoon, a 40 cubic yard commercial dumpster was compacted to the very top with over 5 tons of garbage. More than 5 truckloads of tires were hauled to recyclers and several abandoned car bodies were pulled from the trees and shipped to salvage.

Darel Crowder “compacting” Jon Halleaux & Douglas Seal Then, groups moved to their assigned areas, and went to work. Winching car bodies up from the ravines, pulling hundreds of tires from all over the forest, picking up discarded sofas, chairs, televisions, used motor oil, thousands of empty shotgun shells, discarded roofi ng, household garbage, even 3 boats, all evidence of people using the public resource as a dumping ground.

She said Thank you to all of the individuals and especially the organized groups that that she greatly appreciated such a large turnout of volunteers from the off-road participated in this year’s “Pick Up the Burn”: Vancouver 4-Wheelers, Trail Breakers, community and thanked everyone for donating their time and vehicles to help Poorboy Off-road, Rumble Goat Racing, Woody’s 4x4, Sand Lake Duners, Dirt clean up the forest. With the current DNR budget situation, it was a task they Church ATV, Sore 4x4, Mud Puppies, NAXJA, Dirty 13, Jones Creek Trail Riders, couldn’t otherwise tackle. She asked everyone to remember safety fi rst and to Broke Bastards, Horny 4-Wheelers and the Oregon Air National Guard. We look enjoy their day in the forest. forward to seeing you all again in the forest in 2010. And last but certainly not least, the members, applicants and guests of Piston’s Wild Motorsports club – for their ongoing dedication to this project.

Special thanks go out to Dave “Hootie” Huttula of All Star Music and Events for providing music and sound for the clean up. Your extra efforts are always appreciated and our events are always best when you are there -- our events would just not be the same without you…

DNR staff welcomes volunteers DNR staff Jessica Kimmick & Nick Cronquist help out

Then Crystal Crowder, Piston’s Wild club president, asked volunteers to come up to the registration area to ensure that groups were going to cover all of the areas where concentrations of garbage had been reported. She reminded people that all of this work was toward the goal of opening the area back up to off highway vehicles, closed out nearly 20 years ago. The process has been steadily moving forward for the past 2 ½ years, and it’s all due to the huge amount of effort put forth by the OHV community.

The progress we are seeing in the Yacolt Burn Forest would not be possible without the continuing support of the Pacifi c Cascade Region staff of the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. Thank you again to Jessica Kimmick, Nick Cronquist, Josh Riepe, Shawn Bushnell, Kyle Buckmiller, Steve Rhodes and Brian Poehlein – your efforts are appreciated by us all and we look forward to seeing you soon out on the trails…

A crowd of 112 volunteers gather at registration for their marching orders Respectfully reporting, She thanked the members of the 15 different clubs represented, and all those who weren’t part of a club. And she reminded people to thank all the sponsors, Crystal Crowder Woody’s 4x4 and the Pacifi c Northwest 4 Wheel Drive Association for providing Club President breakfast and lunch, Waste Connections Inc. for delivering and picking up the Piston’s Wild Motorsports dumpster, and donating the disposal fee, Les Schwab Tires for recycling the tires at no cost to taxpayers and Sunbelt Rentals for the use of the off-road forklift. Another great contribution was from Reynolds High School shop class ~ for taking the tires with rims and separating the sets for recycling. The day’s accomplishments would not be possible without the support of these dedicated sponsors.

4-Wheelin’ News DECEMBER 2009 17 All Wheelers Off Road Club- 4W613 Sign Replacement Run October 17th, 2009

This story starts back on July 11th, 2009 when we add new signs on 4W613 at the Gray Rock Trail. On this day we removed all the old signs at the Dome Peak Trail and at Strobach Mountain to take back home to refi nish. We had to make it fast since the Ahtanum State Forest was on fi re at Green Lake.

The next week Shane Fuller offered to plain the old signs for us. We dropped them off at Helliesen Lumber. The signs were too far gone to save. Helliesen Lumber donated 14 new treated 2x6 boards for signs and Phantom-309 routered new words on them for us.

The second marker.

Here is Lisa Graham painting the signs.

Moving up the trail the weather turned bad fast. It got cold, windy and the rain came down hard. At the Strobach Mountain Trail and 4W613 intersection we all got wet putting up these signs.

On Saturday October 17th, 2009 we met up at Nasty Creek Corals to air down. We headed up Nasty Creek Road. At the Strobach Mountain Trail Head we replaced a broken Green Dot Marker with a new one.

Moving up the Strobach Mountain Trail we stopped at a small meadow we added a Green Dot marker to show where the trail was since it is hard to fi nd in the snow. As we worked the rain and wind seem to get worse. We were now hearing thunder.

We moved up the trail to add markers at an intersection where a non-green dot Well they are up but will have to have the paint touched up next summer. trail was. The fi rst marker. The white soaked in. Continued on page 19

Moving up toward the 4W613 Upper Meadow the trail got real slick. I got hung up on a big rock at the top of the steep climb but somehow was able to get going again after a few tries. As soon as I topped the climb I found a Jeep coming down the trail. The Jeep backed up aways to let me by as the rest of stopped at Strobach Springs to see the plaque the Jeeping Nomads had put our group found places to pull off to let the Jeep by. After we regrouped we back up after some mounting mods. headed on. We stopped at the Dome Peak Trail Head to replace the signs. Yes it was still raining.

At Jackass Road we regrouped and headed toward Blue Slide on FS1020. Looking down at Green Lake where the fi re was on July 11th, 2009.

Well they are up. Looks like only one sign need more white paint. Some of the other need the brown touched up.

We dropped down 4W615 toward Blue Lake. The back side of Blue Lake looked to be froze.

Here we are at the 4W613 Lower Meadow where we added new signs on July 11th, 2009.

We dropped off 4W615 onto the Blue Lake Trail and then down the North Fork Ahtanum Road.
