Introduction to the System of Agricultural Research Institutions Institutions of the Ministry of Rural Development 6 7 Special Edition Introduction Ministry to the System of of Rural Development Agricultural Research Institutions Dear reader, During the period of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Hungarian Agricultural Research, the official publication of the Ministry of Rural Development, takes the form of a special issue introducing the system of the Hungarian research institutions in the area of agricultural and environmental sciences. On this occasion I am pleased to welcome you, the reader, and I am sure that you will find this brochure informative. Hungary’s natural endowments, farming traditions, rich environmental and diverse geographical conditions, outstanding soil and balanced climatic characteristics provide an excellent basis for high-quality agricultural work, food-related business and environmental management. Thus, in Hungary, the environmental and societal conditions are given. Their sustainable exploitation and utilisation need to be supported by high-level, intellectual and professional based research and development work. The framework for this is provided by the Hungarian scientific institutional network of rural development, agriculture and environment management, which has a tradition which stretches back more than two hundred years. These traditionally practice-oriented institutions have long been the citadels of Hungarian academic life and we are striving to strengthen them after the difficult period in recent years and to retain them for the future. The following pages introduce interested readers to the diverse and multidisciplinary work of an institutional network which is based on a rich tradition and also on constant innovation, going beyond Hungary’s borders and enriching the European Union with its valuable scientific results. I trust that you will find this publication useful and it will serve as a guide to the intellectual infrastructure and network of scientific institutions of Hungarian rural development. • Kompolt: the Divided Village
PÉTER VÁRKONYI Kompolt: The Divided Village Pro&Contra 1 (2018) 81-95. DOI: 10.33033/pc.2018.1.81 KOMPOLT: THE DIVIDED VILLAGE 83 Abstract This paper discusses the history of modern Kompolt, a village in Heves County, Hunga- ry, with a particular emphasis on its social history. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the society of Kompolt was split along a number of lines and this essay focuses on just one of these divisions, that between the Swabians and the Hungarians. Keywords: Kompolt, identity, Germans, Swabians, Hungarians, society, 19th century, 20th century, immigrants, agriculture, material culture, demography I. Hypothesis This research is grounded in a paradox.1 Swabians have resided in Kompolt since the 18th century but the statistics (for example, the censuses from the 20th century) do not reflect this ethnic reality. A detailed examination can uncover the reason for this paradox. The settlement structure and material culture (on maps and in today’s reality), the sources of Kompolt’s economic status, and the self-reflections of the inhabitants (in the personal papers of both the town’s inhabitants and the community, as well as in interviews) confirm that Kompolt was indeed divided in the past and thus brings the accuracy of the censuses into question. It is this disconnect between reality and bureaucracy that supplies the hypothesis for this study. The prime importance of source criticism for the result of censuses is widely ac- cepted. The methodology2 adopted, the assessors and external factors (politics3, indiscre- tion4, and beliefs5) affect the comparability and usability of the results of censuses.

  • A Millennium of Migrations: Proto-Historic Mobile Pastoralism in Hungary
Bull. Fla. Mus. Nat. Hist. (2003) 44(1) 101-130 101 A MILLENNIUM OF MIGRATIONS: PROTO-HISTORIC MOBILE PASTORALISM IN HUNGARY Ldsz16 Bartosiewiczl During the A.D. 1st millennium, numerous waves of mobile pastoral communities of Eurasian origins reached the area of modern- day Hungary in the Carpathian Basin. This paper reviews animal exploitation as reconstructed from animal remains found at the settlements of Sarmatian, Avar/Slavic, and Early ("Conquering") Hungarian populations. According to the historical record, most of these communities turned to sedentism. Archaeological assemblages also manifest evidence of animal keeping, such as sheep and/or goat herding, as well as pig, cattle, and horse. Such functional similarities, however, should not be mistaken for de facto cultural continuity among the zooarchaeological data discussed here within the contexts of environment and cultural history. Following a critical assessment of assemblages available for study, analysis of species frequencies shed light on ancient li feways of pastoral communities intransition. Spatial limitations (both geographical and political), as well as a climate, more temperate than in the Eurasian Steppe Belt, altered animal-keeping practices and encouraged sedentism. Key words: Central European Migration, environmental determinism, nomadism, pastoral animal keeping Zoarchaeological data central to this paper originate from Data used in this study represent the lowest common settlements spanning much of the A.D. 1st millennium denominator of the three different

Nemes Lajos – Sellyei Diána Heves megye német lakossága a török kiűzésétől a XVIII. század végéig Heves megye a török hódoltság korában mind településállományában, mind a lakosság számában nagyon nagy veszteséget szenvedett. A török csapatok 1687.

C 108/8 EN Offi cial Jour nal of the European Union 1.4.2020 OTHER ACTS EUROPEAN COMMISSION Publication of a communication of approval of a standard amendment to the product specification for a name in the wine sector referred to in Article 17(2) and (3) of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33 (2020/C 108/06) This communication is published in accordance with Article 17(5) of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33 (1). COMMUNICATING THE APPROVAL OF A STANDARD AMENDMENT ‘Debrői Hárslevelű’ Reference number PDO-HU-A1373-AM02 Date of communication: 18 December 2019 DESCRIPTION OF AND REASONS FOR THE APPROVED AMENDMENT 1. Creation of the late-harvest wine type a) Product specification headings affected: II. Description of the wines III. Specific oenological practices IV. Demarcated area V. Maximum yield VII. Link with the geographical area VIII. Further conditions b) Increasingly, the characteristics of the Debrő region and the influence of changing climate conditions are producing higher-quality grapes of the Hárslevelű variety that can be left on the vine for longer and are suited to the production of late-harvest wine. With these late harvests, shrivelling, or the occurrence of raisined grapes through Botrytis, has been increasingly common in the demarcated area for years now. 2. Change in minimum sugar content of the grape a) Product specification headings affected: III. Specific oenological practices b) The purpose of the modification is to give wines produced from aromatic grape varieties a fresh, aromatic character. With the current minimum natural alcoholic strength by volume set at 10,60 % (17° Hungarian must grade), this is not possible to achieve in all vintages, since the grapes have to be able to retain their aroma and acids, which in warmer vintages can only be achieved by harvesting them earlier.
