Greetings from Graham

Dear Friends,

This time of year, as the days shorten, November offers two special times to look back and remember with thankfulness.

All Souls On November 4th, at 4pm in Zeals church, we shall be giving thanks for those ‘we love but see no more’. The service will include the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one, and we will particularly remember those of this parish who have died in the last year. If you would like someone remembered in this way, do please call me or send an email. You are welcome to stay for a cuppa afterwards.

Remembrance On this special centenary year, Armistice Day falls on Remembrance Sunday. There will be a service in each of our four churches at 10.15, followed by an Act of Remembrance at the memorial, with 2 minutes silence at 11am. At Bourton, Kilmington and Zeals, coffee will be served from 10am. At Stourton, this will happen after the 11am Act of Remembrance, in the Memorial Hall. We hope that you will come to join us as we give thanks to God for all those who laid down their lives for their country, and also give thanks for the One who gave His life for us all. As Jesus said, ‘No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’

Pilgrim Course The Pilgrim Course continues with a deeper look at the Lord’s Prayer. Meeting fortnightly at the Rectory at 11 on a Friday morning, we meet for about an hour. The next section begins on November 9th. Do come along and join us, even if you haven’t been before, as we seek to understand together what this prayer might mean for us today.

And finally… While leading a tour of pre-school children through a hospital, a conversation was overheard between one little girl and an x-ray technician.

"Have you ever broken a bone?" he asked. "Yes," the girl replied. "Did it hurt?" "No." "Really? Which bone did you break?" "My sister's arm."

Your friend in Christ, Graham Rev Graham Perryman 3

Green Fingers : November

November Notes from the not so green fingered I write these notes from sunny Seville where we have been on a mini-break. Having visited the magical Alhambra a few years ago, I have become fascinated by the Islamic " paradise gardens " and although the gardens at the " Real Alcàzar " in Seville and the Alcàzar de Los Reyes Cristianos in Córdoba are not quite so magical, they still follow the same principles of the courtyard divided into 4 by rills with a central water feature or fountain and shade from the searing sun plus seating for contemplation. Now back to the UK and jobs for now: 1 Continue with the boring old leaf sweeping. 2 Put any tender plants into the greenhouse to protect from frost. 3 Once the Dahlia tubers have become blackened by frost dig them up and store somewhere that is frost free. 4 Put any pots onto feet to protect from the wet. 5 Prune roses to guard against wind rock. 6 Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into our gardens. Zeals Walkers On Sunday October 7th 16 walkers gathered at the Royal Oak at Swallowcliffe in glorious autumn sunshine. The walk was on lanes, tracks and field edges walking in the Buxbury Hill area and on the Buxbury Hollow Track (from where you can see some of the Fovant Badges). We then carefully crossed the A30 following the Hut Lane path and back towards the village around fields edges. 14 of us stayed for a good lunch with plenty of chatter at the Royal Oak. The walk in November will be a local walk starting at The White Lion at 10.00. If you are interested in joining us for the walk please contact Rosalie, [email protected]

News from Stourhead

The arrival of November means that the nights have drawn in and there’s a real chill in the air. For Stourhead it doesn’t signify the end of autumn, as there is still plenty of autumn colour around the garden to enjoy.

October was a mixed month weather wise; whilst the autumn started off with a few gloomy days, as the half term week for Wiltshire and our neighbouring counties came, so did the sunshine. What followed were some wonderfully sunny autumn days, and cold nights, creating a wonderful display that was enjoyed by thousands of visitors.

The house will be closing its doors for the main season on 11 November before the team begin decorating the showrooms for the Christmas opening using hundreds of decorations which have been handcrafted by a team of volunteers. This year across the property, we are working to create a bigger and better Christmas than ever before. Alongside the wreaths and garlands which decorate the buildings, we are also looking to light areas of the property, creating a wonderful atmosphere and experience for those that visit.

It’s not an easy task to get a property of this size decorated for Christmas, so if you visit in the last week of November you will see our teams hard at work decorating for the festive season. We wouldn’t be able to put on such a wonderful display without the help and support of many volunteers and local groups, so do come and see the decorations and let us know what you think.

We are also looking to do more for our family visitors and are being visited by Father Christmas at the weekends in December. Tickets for this are available, but it’s a very popular event and they are selling fast! We will also have a family trail available throughout December which follows Father Christmas on his grand tour.

If you are keen to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, we have lots of volunteering opportunities across the property. Please do contact me. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon.

From the Registers Baptism: 7th October at St. George's Bourton: Catherine Stella Louise Bartlett

Val Donell The planned recognition of Val’s 40 years playing the organ for the parish (planned for October) has had to be postponed because of the considerable roof repair work to St Mary’s Kilmington which is currently going on. It is now planned to have Val’s special Service on Sunday 9th December at St Mary’s.

Which Spade Would You Choose? The shiny spade goes through the soil easily; but the spade, clogged up with clay and debris from previous labours, not so. It is heavier than it should be, it is more cumbersome and harder to use and definitely more back breaking. Both spades hang side by side in the shed and soon their owners will appear. In comes Mr A. he doesn’t look at all happy. His eyes are dull and he seems to be carrying the world on his shoulders as he plods over and picks up his spade and then shuffles out to start digging his plot. This work will frustrate him even more for he has picked up the spade encrusted from his efforts yesterday and he can’t be bothered to clean it. He feels beaten and fed up and he hopes nobody else will turn up to the allotment.

Too late ...somebody is coming….AND they are singing to themselves. Mr B walks briskly to the shared shed, picks up his bright shiny spade with a smile and gives it another rub with the rag out of his pocket to be sure it’s perfect. To him, this spade is his tried and trusted friend that enables him to dig his soil well and to do the best job he can.

If your life was a spade which would it be? Is your memory clogged up with the debris of sad and difficult times which you constantly revisit and which cause you distress today, wearing you out in the process and ruining your life?

Are you prepared to accept the past mistakes of others and indeed yourself - to forgive and to move on, living the best way you can?

We all work the same plot - may we dig it happily together! Mona Tyler LLM

Lead roof thefts: be extra vigilant There has been the following warning from the Diocese:

Around the county we are seeing a number of thefts of lead from roofs again from churches, historic buildings and also some more modern buildings too. All too often the theft of lead from a roof is only discovered after a downpour of rain and then the value of the theft is often exceeded by the value of the water ingress damage, sometimes with heritage properties irreversible. For this reason it is important to know your building, where those attractive metals have been used and check regularly that these are intact.

In view of our recent very bad experience at St Peter’s, we should be very alert to this continuing problem. 13

Simon Firbank In recognition of 29 years of service to his community and North Dorset Town and Parish Councils, Major Simon Firbank was quietly presented with 4 large, decorative terracotta planters to take pride of place in his garden. Funds had been collected throughout the village during September/October as it had been strongly felt by many villagers that Simon’s contributions to village life should be informally acknowledged. Since joining the PC in1989 he has seen many changes and improvements in the village including the cleaning of the war memorial, the erection of the village "gates" as you enter and leave Bourton and many building projects, the latest two being The Mill and Ash Green developments. He has also provided valuable support to local residents on an individual basis. Everyone who contributed to the purchase of the leaving present for Simon would like to wish him all the very best in his retirement.

News from Parish Councils Bourton The Parish Council has recently welcomed two new Councillors, Iain McVie and Andrew Gillett. Iain has over 30 years experience in Local Government and the Home Office, working in senior leadership positions. Iain has also previously been the Clerk to both Bourton PC and Zeals PC. Andrew is a solicitor based in London, dealing mainly with rural issues such as highways, public access, liability and firearms. Andrew has lived in Bourton since 2010, he has a young family with both of his children attending Bourton school and pre-school. The PC are seeking to recruit a volunteer Flood Warden so if you are interested please contact the Clerk. Finally, by the time this goes to press, the site of the proposed new village will have been decided by the Parish Council. Eve Wynn, Bourton Parish Clerk: 07702 709 557

Kilmington There has not been a meeting of the Parish Council since the last publication so there is not much to report. However, the Clerk has received confirmation from the (PC’s) insurance company that the risk assessment for the planned village firework display on Tuesday 6 November has been approved. Royal Mail has written to all local Parish Clerks asking for help in raising awareness of scam mail in the community. A poster is on display on the village noticeboard and can also be viewed on our website www.kilmingtonwiltshire.org If you or someone you know is receiving scam mail, please contact the Royal Mail either by phoning their helpline 0800 0113 466, email [email protected] or write to them at FREEPOST SCAM MAIL enclosing any items that are suspected of being scam mail. As instructed at the last meeting, the Clerk has been in contact with three local tree surgeons in connection with the pruning and maintenance of the trees in Green Ride and it is hoped that quotes will be available for a decision to be made at the next meeting of the PC. The next meeting of Kilmington PC will take place on 22 November at 7.30 pm in Whitesheet CE Primary Academy. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Stourton with Gasper There is very little to report this month but we did have an issue with the bus shelter in the High Street being used as a Public Convenience. Appropriate notices have now been placed on the windows which we hope will deter visitors to the village as it is not thought to be anyone with a local connection. Cllr Hoare has provided some really fine oak wood to enable Cllr Marks to repair the shelter before the bad weather sets in...... cont on page 17

Royal Mail has written to all local Parish Clerks asking for help in raising awareness of scam mail in the community. Zeals There has not been a meeting of the Parish Council since the last formal one held in September: please note that detailed minutes of that meeting are posted on the village noticeboards and available to also view on-line on the hugofox.com/communities/zeals website. News this month will therefore be somewhat less substantial. However, I am very pleased to note that October's Defibrillator Awareness Training Session proved to be a great success once again. It is an event for the wider community and not just for Zeals. This time 25 people were treated to a combined lecture and practical demonstration, with hands on practice of the methods demonstrated very much encouraged, by the instructor from the South West Ambulance Service. It is planned to hold another event next Autumn, once more in the Village Hall, and I say again that it is well worth attending so that vital safety skills are learned and that people become confident in the use of a defibrillator. We are most fortunate to have several quite easily accessible machines in our area and it would be a shame if local people were not able to use them properly and with confidence. In line with plans made by Rev Graham Perryman and the PCC to have separate Remembrance Services throughout the parish for this very special year of commemoration, at 10 am on 11th November there will be refreshments at St Martin’s, followed by a short service, before we gather around the War Memorial on the Green for our Act of Remembrance. The Parish Council's next bi-monthly meeting to be held in the Village Hall is scheduled for Thursday 8 November at 7pm. and all are welcome to attend. Graham Edgar: Clerk to Zeals Parish Council. .

Country Calendar: November

Autumn on the wane – a sniff of winter’s reign Dark silhouettes of carrion crows – calling harshly of winter woes Sheep’s breath mingles with the frosty air - harvest fields stark and bare This is winter tide in ’s beautiful countryside

Short days and long nights but winter is still an exceptionally busy time on the farm. The days are truly not long enough. Cattle are all in their housing and the calves have now been weaned from their mothers. A few sleepless nights for us as the cows bale mournfully for their youngster and the calf reciprocates. It is extremely short lived as the mother after nearly nine months of rearing her off spring quickly gets used to not having to think about anything else but herself, she only has a couple of months before the next one arrives! Young Albert the foal has had a wonderful summer and grown into a very handsome specimen, now he is nearing six months he needs to be relieved of a couple of items, quite a painless operation done by our vet. As a child in Yorkshire I remember this being done in the field without any fuss and the dogs waiting patiently to catch the “sweetmeats” before they hit the ground!! Poor Albert he will never be the same again Jane Parker

Admiral Sir William Reginald Hall KCMG, CB Known as Blinker Hall due to his chronic facial twitch, and as Reggie to his family, he was born 28 June 1870, in The Close, Salisbury to Caroline daughter of Rev. Henry Armfield, Vicar of Salisbury Cathedral & The Close. His father was Captain William Hall, first Director of Naval Intelligence. Blinker died in London in 1943 a year after his son. Blinker joined the Navy in 1884, reaching the rank of Commander in 1898, Captain 1905. & from 05-07 he was the inspector mechanical training. From 1911-1913 he served as assistant controller to The Royal Navy.

Appointed as Director of Naval Intelligence in 1914, it is said he had a brilliant brain. Hall founded 'Room 40' with Sir Alfred Ewing. Hall was responsible for building up naval intelligence, encouraged code breaking, making Naval intelligence the pre-eminent British intelligence agency of WW1. He encouraged co-operation between MI5 and MI6 and Scotland Yard Special Branch.

Blinker established radio stations along Britain’s east and south coast. These intercepted German Radio traffic. Room 40 was responsible for incredibly important Naval decryption at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916, and was also responsible for deciphering the Zimmerman telegraph in 1917, which was especially important as it suggested a German plot to assist Mexico in annexing itself from the US, often considered one of the main reasons America joined the War. They also were responsible for the capture of the British traitor, Sir Roger Casement, an Irish Patriot.

The German Navy's code book was captured early on during the war. Hall's cryptographers used this to intercept codes sent between the German Fleet. As a result the Royal Navy knew the position of nearly every German ship during the war.

Room 40 was responsible for the capture of Captain Franz Von Rintelin, who had gone to America under cover as his brother in law, a business man. Von Rintelin organised the firebombing of munitions factories and ships in neutral USA. He was tricked into coming to Great Britain and captured there, living as a gentleman prisoner with Hall’s family. He was eventually taken back to the US and imprisoned for 6 years. He returned to Great Britain after the war and became a lifelong friend of Hall.

Hall was promoted Rear Admiral in 1917 and given a knighthood in recognition of his contribution in WW1. He retired 1919 and became MP for Liverpool, Derby Division. He was eventually made a full admiral in 1926. Wakefield

Cookery Corner Provencal Beef Stew This excellent stew benefits from long slow cooking. A heavy-lidded le Creuset casserole dish is ideal. Serve this with plain boiled noodles sprinkled with grated cheese and freshly grated black pepper.

Ingredients: (for 6) 4lb (2kg) stewing beef cut into chunks, 8oz (250g) smoked streaky bacon, finely diced, olive oil, 2 cloves of garlic, chopped, 2 tablespoons cognac, 2 tablespoons flour, 1 large glass good red wine, 2 tablespoons wine vinegar. For the marinade: 4 glasses red wine, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 2 tablespoons garlic, finely chopped, 1 sprig thyme, 3 cloves, 1 bayleaf, 1 small handful parsley, chopped, sea salt and black pepper, 1 large onion, chopped.

Method: Combine meat with the marinade ingredients and leave overnight. Fry the bacon in some of the oil with the garlic. Drain the meat, reserving the marinade, add to the bacon and brown all over. Pour over the warmed Cognac and flame. Sprinkle on the flour and stir well. Pour over the marinade, wine and vinegar, cover and simmer gently for about 2 hours or until the meat is very tender and the sauce has thickened. Serve with the noodles and a plain green salad. Ted Henson kindly has provided three silhouette soldiers free for the commemoration, one being on The Mere Post office. I would like to thank everyone involved in the great community effort being made to commemorate the end of WW1.

Parish and Town Councils have been attending face to face meetings with Wiltshire Council regarding the new Local Plan that will cover the period from 2016 - 2036.
