All Souls On November 4th, at 4pm in Zeals church, we shall be giving thanks for those ‘we love but see no more’. The service will include the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one, and we will particularly remember those of this parish who have died in the last year. If you would like someone remembered in this way, do please call me or send an email. You are welcome to stay for a cuppa afterwards. Remembrance On this special centenary year, Armistice Day falls on Remembrance Sunday. There will be a service in each of our four churches at 10.15, followed by an Act of Remembrance at the memorial, with 2 minutes silence at 11am. At Bourton, Kilmington and Zeals, coffee will be served from 10am. At Stourton, this will happen after the 11am Act of Remembrance, in the Memorial Hall. We hope that you will come to join us as we give thanks to God for all those who laid down their lives for their country, and also give thanks for the One who gave His life for us all. As Jesus said, ‘No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ Pilgrim Course The Pilgrim Course continues with a deeper look at the Lord’s Prayer. Meeting fortnightly at the Rectory at 11 on a Friday morning, we meet for about an hour. The next section begins on November 9th. Do come along and join us, even if you haven’t been before, as we seek to understand together what this prayer might mean for us today. And finally… While leading a tour of pre-school children through a hospital, a conversation was overheard between one little girl and an x-ray technician. "Have you ever broken a bone?" he asked. Having visited the magical Alhambra a few years ago, I have become fascinated by the Islamic " paradise gardens " and although the gardens at the " Real Alcàzar " in Seville and the Alcàzar de Los Reyes Cristianos in Córdoba are not quite so magical, they still follow the same principles of the courtyard divided into 4 by rills with a central water feature or fountain and shade from the searing sun plus seating for contemplation. Now back to the UK and jobs for now: 1 Continue with the boring old leaf sweeping. 2 Put any tender plants into the greenhouse to protect from frost. 3 Once the Dahlia tubers have become blackened by frost dig them up and store somewhere that is frost free. 4 Put any pots onto feet to protect from the wet. 5 Prune roses to guard against wind rock. 6 Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into our gardens. The walk was on lanes, tracks and field edges walking in the Buxbury Hill area and on the Buxbury Hollow Track (from where you can see some of the Fovant Badges). We then carefully crossed the A30 following the Hut Lane path and back towards the village around fields edges. 14 of us stayed for a good lunch with plenty of chatter at the Royal Oak. The walk in November will be a local walk starting at The White Lion at 10.00. For Stourhead it doesn’t signify the end of autumn, as there is still plenty of autumn colour around the garden to enjoy. October was a mixed month weather wise; whilst the autumn started off with a few gloomy days, as the half term week for Wiltshire and our neighbouring counties came, so did the sunshine. What followed were some wonderfully sunny autumn days, and cold nights, creating a wonderful display that was enjoyed by thousands of visitors. The house will be closing its doors for the main season on 11 November before the team begin decorating the showrooms for the Christmas opening using hundreds of decorations which have been handcrafted by a team of volunteers. This year across the property, we are working to create a bigger and better Christmas than ever before. Alongside the wreaths and garlands which decorate the buildings, we are also looking to light areas of the property, creating a wonderful atmosphere and experience for those that visit. It’s not an easy task to get a property of this size decorated for Christmas, so if you visit in the last week of November you will see our teams hard at work decorating for the festive season. We wouldn’t be able to put on such a wonderful display without the help and support of many volunteers and local groups, so do come and see the decorations and let us know what you think. We are also looking to do more for our family visitors and are being visited by Father Christmas at the weekends in December.
