In 1882, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1898) published the historical novel Anandamath containing his most famous verse and created a wave. The resounding echo of ‘Vande Mataram’ (Glory to Motherland) could be heard from young nationalist heroes headed for the gallows, leaders who addressed political rallies and barefoot children running the streets. More than a hundred years later, in 2002, this ‘second national anthem’ is being sung in school prayer halls and by fervent Hindu revivalists. However, if we accord to Bankimchandra the brand of nationalism that Vande Mataram has come to signify today, we’d be telling only half the story. The 19th century author who lived in the heydays of the intellectual revolution in Bengal ranks high amongst the historical figures who have contributed to the notions of liberalism and freedom. -

“Scott of Bengal”: Examining the European Legacy in the Historical Novels of Bankimchandra Chatterjee Nilanjana Dutta A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Sucheta Mazumdar John McGowan Eric Downing Srinivas Aravamudan Tony Stewart ABSTRACT Nilanjana Dutta: “Scott of Bengal”: Examining the European Legacy in the Historical Novels of Bankimchandra Chatterjee (Under the direction of Sucheta Mazumdar) It is generally agreed that the novel is of European origin and that it was imported into non-European countries through colonial contact. While acknowledging this European precedence, it is important to also acknowledge the unique ways in which non- European authors indigenized the form to respond to the needs of their contemporary readers who were their intended audience. The works of the nineteenth-century Indian novelist Bankimchandra Chatterjee are a case in point. This dissertation focuses on the role the historical novels of Bankim performed in determining Indian identities at a particular juncture in Indian colonial history. A comparative study with selected novels of Sir Walter Scott, the premier historical novelist of Europe, helps illustrate the singularity of Bankim’s task; Scott and Bankim occupied quite different worlds and their works serve as metaphors of this difference. As the first successful novelist of India, Bankim took on the task of invoking history to create a national identity for a people who, he felt, did not have one. This identity had to be imagined through complex negotiations of race, religion, and gender, each of which required constant redefining. -

International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, Volume 3, Issue 12, December 2013 1 ISSN 2250-3153 Wives and Widows in Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s Novels Anuma Student of PhD in Department of English University of Rajasthan The topic which I have taken for my term paper is about the depiction of wives and widows in Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s novels Krishnakanta’s will, Bishabriksha, Devi Chaudhrani and Indira. I am mainly focusing on the way how Bankim is writing about the condition of women in contemporary Bengali society and at the same time also describing the conflict between their personal desires and social expectations. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee also known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, was one of the greatest novelists and poets of India. He is famous as author of Vande Mataram, the national song of India. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee began his literary career as a writer of verse. He then turned to fiction. Durgeshnandini, his first Bengali romance, was published in 1865. His famous novels include Kapalkundala (1866), Mrinalini (1869), Vishbriksha (1873), Chandrasekhar (1877), Rajani (1877), Rajsinha (1881), and Devi Chaudhurani (1884). Bankim Chandra Chatterjee most famous novel was Anand Math (1882). Anand Math contained the song "Bande Mataram", which was later adopted as National Song. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wanted to bring about a cultural revival of Bengal by stimulating the intellect of the Bengali speaking people through literary campaign. With this end in view he brought out monthly magazine called Bangadarshan in 1872. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was the first to introduce the pre-marital romance in his novels in Bengali literature and which was completely in opposition of the male-dominated orthodox society of that time. -

CIKITUSI JOURNAL FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ISSN NO: 0975-6876 Triangular love in the Novel of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay Tumtum Mukherjee, Assistant Professor in Bengali, Bankura Zilla Saradamani Mahila Mahavidyapith, Bankura-722101 Abstract This part is about the principal novel composed by an Indian in English, Rajmohan's Wife (1864) by Bankimchandra Chatterjee, who was likewise India's, positively Bengal's, first significant author. Undoubtedly, it isn't at all bizarre to peruse Bankim as one of the makers of Indian patriotism, who utilized devises, for example, purposeful anecdote and embodiment widely to pass on his thoughts. I am particularly honoured because this is only the second Memorial Oration in memory of Bankim Chandra TChattopadhyay. In the title of the Talk, and the mentioned names and expressions, we have Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee (after whom SPMRF is named), Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bengal Renaissance and Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. I will try to touch upon all these individuals and all these expressions, beginning with Bengal Renaissance. I may sometimes slip into a little bit of Bengali. But please be reassured that if I do quote in Bengali, I will do my best to also translate it. Renaissance of course means rebirth. The expression Bengal Renaissance was coined with an obvious allusion to the Italian Renaissance. The Bengal Renaissance is characterized by almost a revolution in the domains of culture and society and in intellectual and artistic pursuits, such as in literature. How does one date the Bengal Renaissance? In his book, “History of the Bengali-speaking People”, Dr Nitish Sengupta defined the Bengal Renaissance as the period from Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772-1833) to Rabindranath Tagore (1861- 1941). This is a very long time-frame. Whenever people write about the Bengal renaissance, a lot of emphasis is placed on the Tagore family, which is of course, right. -

Imagining Bharat: Romance, Heroism, And Hindu Nationalism In The Bengali Novel, 1880-1920 Abstract Although the Republic of India was founded as a secular democracy, the country has long been plagued by sectarian violence between its Hindu majority and Muslim minority. Scholars have examined how the 1940s Indian nationalist movement and the 1947 Partition of the subcontinent laid the foundation for communal tensions, but the long-standing conception of India as a fundamentally Hindu nation has received less attention. This dissertation examines colonial Bengal at the turn of the twentieth century in order to trace the longer history behind the widespread belief that India is a fundamentally Hindu nation—the animating tenet of contemporary Hindutva ideology. Reading works composed in Bengali and English, I demonstrate how the Bengali novel played a central role in perpetuating and, at times, contesting this Hindu cultural imagining by strategically exploiting elements of indigenous oral and literary traditions alongside key themes of British Orientalist discourse. -

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee March 31, 2021 About Bankim Chandra Chatterjee Bankim Chandra Chatterjee also known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the greatest novelists and poets of India. Birth: 26th June 1838 in the village of Kanthalpara in the town of North 24 Parganas, Naihati, present day West Bengal The song Vande Mataram, composed in Sanskrit by Bankimchandra Chatterji, was a source of inspiration to the people in their struggle for freedom. It has an equal status with Jana-gana-mana The word ‘Bankim Chandra’ in Bengali means ‘the moon on the second day of the bright fortnight’. Bankim Chandra’s father Yadav Chandra Chattopadhyaya was in government service. After his birth he was posted to Midnapur as Deputy Collector. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee had his early education in Midnapur. After his early education in Midnapur Bankim Chandra Chatterji joined the Mohsin College at Hoogly and studied there for six years In 1856, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee joined the Presidency College in Calcutta. In 1857, there was a strong revolt against the rule of East India Company but Bankim Chandra Chatterjee continued his studies and passed his B.A. Examination in 1859. The Lieutenant Governor of Calcutta appointed Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as Deputy Collector in the same year. He was in Government service for thirty-two years and retired in 1891. He passed away on April 8, 1894 His literary contributions He began his literary career as a writer of verse. He then turned to fiction. Chattopadhyay’s first novel was an English one, Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) and he also started writing his religious and philosophical essays in English. -

www.TLHjournal.com Literary Herald ISSN: 2454-3365 An International Refereed English e-Journal Impact Factor: 2.24 (IIJIF) EXPLORING BANKIM CHANDRA CHATTERJEE’S CONCEPT OF ‘NEW WOMAN’ IN COLONIAL BENGAL AS REFLECTED IN KRISHNAKANTA’S WILL Dr. M.A.Afzal Farooq Asssistant Professor Department of English Central University of Jammu Jammu Abstract: This research paper titled “ Exploring Bankim Chandra Chatterjee‟s Concept of „New Woman‟ in Colonial Bengal as Reflected in Krishnakanta’s Will” examines Bankim‟s portrayal of women characters in his novels in general and the character of Rohini in particular in his novella Krishnakanta’s Will. Krishnakanta’s Will reverberates with burning and pressing issues of colonial Bengal which called for renaissance in India for the first time. Burning issues such as child marriage, widow remarriage, reigning feudalism and anarchic patriarchy, corruption among the clergy are foregrounded in the novel thus opening a new chapter in the history of literature in colonial India. Translated by Marian Maddern and S.N. Mukherjee, and incorporated in The Poison Tree, the novella Krishnakanta’s Will portrays a brutally true picture of issues plaguing colonial Bengal. This paper throws concentrated reflective light on Bankim Chandra‟s exploration of the vexing socio-political issues via depiction of Rohini- Govindalal relationship. This research paper is an attempt to understand and analyse Bankim Chandra‟s concept of „new woman‟ and the characteristics he attributes to such characters in his novels, especially in Krishnakanta’s Will. At the same time the paper unearths Bankim Chandra‟s depiction of the struggle between good and evil and the ultimate victory of the former over the latter. -

He wrote more than twelve novels, essays and commentaries in Bengali which were widely translated into other regional languages of India as well as in English About Bankim Chandra Chatterjee Bankim Chandra Chatterjee also known as the ” Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay ” who was one of the greatest novelists and poets of India. He is famous as author of Vande Mataram which are the national song of India. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a voracious reader and was especially interested in Sanskrit literature. He got admission in the Presidency College in Calcutta in 1856. After completing his education, he joined government service and retired in 1891. Birth Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was born on 27 June 1838 in the village Kantalpara of the 24 Paraganas District of Bengal. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee belonged to a family of Brahmins. His father, a government official, went on to become the Deputy Collector of Midnapur.
